Dar holds key talks with Australia, Oman on region…

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held important diplomatic meetings in Manila during the ASEAN Regional Forum 2026, discussing regional security, global developments, and ways to strengthen Pakistan’s relations with other countries.

Dar met Australian Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong and reviewed the current state of Pakistan-Australia relations. Both sides agreed to further expand cooperation through regular high-level contacts and closer engagement.

The two foreign ministers also discussed recent regional tensions and international challenges. They stressed that dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law are essential for achieving long-term peace and stability.

Australia appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to support dialogue and reduce tensions in the region. Both countries agreed to continue cooperation on matters of mutual interest.

During another meeting, Dar held talks with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi. The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the positive progress in Pakistan-Oman relations and agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The discussions focused on increasing trade, promoting investment, improving business-to-business links, expanding people-to-people contacts, and enhancing cooperation through international forums.

Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments. They emphasised the need to uphold ceasefires, respect international law, and work together to promote peace and security.

Oman praised Pakistan’s constructive role in encouraging dialogue and supporting regional stability. The two ministers agreed to remain in close communication on important issues.

Earlier in Manila, Dar also met senior officials of the Asian Development Bank and called for faster progress on financing for Pakistan’s Main Line-1 railway project. He highlighted the long-standing partnership between Pakistan and the development institution and discussed expanding cooperation in different sectors.

Dar also held separate meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rehman. The discussions covered bilateral relations, trade, energy cooperation, connectivity, and future diplomatic engagement.

The ASEAN Regional Forum has brought together foreign ministers and senior officials from several countries to discuss major global and regional challenges, including security issues, energy supplies, trade, food security, and ongoing conflicts.

    Pakistan’s water reservoirs have stored more than 6.25 million acre-feet (MAF) of water during the ongoing Kharif season, bolstered by surging monsoon inflows across major national dams. An official from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) confirmed that Tarbela Dam currently holds 3.395 MAF, Mangla Dam holds 3.011 MAF, and Chashma Barrage contains 0.121 MAF. At Tarbela, inflows reached 285,700 cusecs against regulated outflows of 210,000 cusecs. Chashma Barrage recorded inflows of 263,700 cusecs and outflows of 225,000 cusecs, while Mangla Dam logged 80,500 cusecs in inflows alongside reduced outflows of 10,000 cusecs to rapidly build capacity. Due to heavy monsoon rains creating flood-like conditions at both major reservoirs, WAPDA and IRSA are managing operations cautiously to regulate inflows safely and conserve water. Downstream of Kotri Barrage, water releases were kept at a minimal 0.138 MAF between April 1 and July 21 to prevent seawater intrusion into the Indus delta, though downstream discharges are projected to increase as peak monsoon flows continue. All four provinces are currently receiving their complete indented irrigation allocations to support agricultural activities during the Kharif season. Water managers continue to monitor basin conditions closely, including at Marala Headworks on the Chenab River, where inflows rose to 102,400 cusecs with outflows kept at 80,100 cusecs following catchment rainfall. However, IRSA expressed concern over the inability to independently verify the exact origin and scale of upstream river flows, as India has suspended real-time hydrological data sharing under the Indus Waters Treaty.

Saudi authorities described the meeting as an important step toward putting the maritime alliance into operation. The initiative comes as security concerns continue to grow around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. Tensions around the strategic waterway have intensified during the US-Iran conflict. Disruptions to shipping have raised concerns about global supplies of oil and liquefied natural gas, while diplomatic efforts to secure freedom of navigation remain uncertain. US Vice President JD Vance has said that keeping energy prices affordable for American consumers is currently Washington’s top priority in the conflict. Vance said the administration wanted to maintain lower oil and gas prices while also ensuring that Iran could not acquire a nuclear weapon. His remarks came as the prolonged conflict continued to affect energy markets and increase pressure on the US economy. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington was preparing unprecedented economic measures against Tehran. He said the United States would combine intensified economic pressure with restrictions linked to Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also said Washington had the military capability to maintain its naval blockade of Iran for an extended period. He said American ships could be rotated to sustain the operation. The confrontation has severely affected Iran’s economy and disrupted its access to international trade. Tehran, meanwhile, has sought to use the Strait of Hormuz as leverage in negotiations with Washington. Iran has demanded the removal of economic sanctions and the release of frozen assets as part of conditions for restoring normal maritime traffic. Commercial traffic through the Strait has fallen sharply since the conflict began. The decline has heightened fears that a prolonged disruption could further affect global energy supplies. Two vessels linked to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company were reportedly attacked while passing through the waterway, prompting condemnation from the UAE. The situation has also kept oil markets volatile. Although crude prices declined recently amid concerns over weaker demand and rising US inventories, renewed attacks and threats of further escalation have continued to unsettle investors. The International Energy Agency has revised its forecast for global oil supply, projecting a larger decline than previously expected. Economists have warned that a prolonged conflict could weaken global economic growth and increase the risk of recession in some regions.     Polling resumes at 23 stations in AJK’s Bagh

    BAGH: Voting is underway at 23 polling stations in two constituencies of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Bagh district as authorities conduct re-polling following the suspension of results from the earlier phase. Polling began at 8am and is scheduled to continue until 5pm. Security arrangements have been strengthened around the polling stations to ensure voters can cast their ballots without fear or disruption. The re-polling covers parts of LA-15 Bagh Central and LA-16 Eastern Bagh. Voting had earlier failed to take place at nine polling stations in LA-15 and 14 stations in LA-16. The AJK Election Commission subsequently withheld the results of both constituencies and ordered voting at the affected stations. In LA-15, Pakistan Peoples Party candidate Sardar Ziaul Qamar had secured 16,637 votes in the polling that took place earlier. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas was second with 15,015 votes, while Jamaat-i-Islami candidate retired Brigadier Dr Muhammad Khan received 12,259 votes. In LA-16, PML-N’s Sardar Mir Akbar was leading on the basis of votes already counted. He had obtained 19,515 votes and held a lead of 3,225 votes over PPP candidate Sardar Qamaruz Zaman. The contest in both constituencies has remained tense. Candidates have levelled allegations of large-scale rigging against their political opponents. AJK Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said adequate security had been deployed at the polling stations. He said sufficient police and other law-enforcement personnel were available to provide voters with a secure environment. The re-polling is part of the third phase of the AJK elections, which has been conducted amid concerns over law and order in parts of the region. The third phase was initially scheduled across Poonch Division, covering 11 constituencies in Bagh, Haveli, Poonch and Sudhnoti districts. However, the Election Commission limited polling to Bagh and Haveli because of security concerns. Polling was held earlier in both districts, but the commission withheld the results of two Bagh constituencies after voting could not be conducted at the 23 affected stations. The commission had already announced the result of LA-14 Bagh-I, commonly known as Dhirkot. Jammu Kashmir Awami Dast-o-Bazu Party candidate Sajid Iqbal Abbasi won the seat by securing 40,522 votes. Another closely watched contest was LA-17 Haveli, where AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was a candidate. The constituency became embroiled in controversy after the returning officer declared Rathore the winner. PML-N candidate Engineer Mohsin Aziz challenged the result and claimed that an assurance had been given that the result would not be announced before his complaint was considered. The AJK chief election commissioner heard arguments from both sides and later reserved his decision.
