Govt withdraws controversial telecom amendment bil…

ISLAMABAD: The government on Thursday withdrew the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, from the Senate amid concerns raised by opposition lawmakers and stakeholders in the telecom sector.

The withdrawal motion was moved on the Senate floor by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry on behalf of the Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication.

The proposed legislation sought to introduce amendments to the existing legal and regulatory framework governing Pakistan’s telecommunications sector. However, the bill had faced criticism in recent weeks, with opposition members and industry representatives expressing reservations over several of its provisions.

No specific reason for withdrawing the bill was disclosed during the Senate proceedings. However, government sources indicated that the legislation could be brought back before Parliament after further consultations with relevant stakeholders and consideration of their concerns.

The Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act provides the legal framework for the structure, licensing and regulation of the country’s telecom sector.

With the bill withdrawn, the existing telecom regulatory framework will remain unchanged for the time being.

CM Punjab Rahmat Card enters digital disbursement …

LAHORE: Following the successful computerized ballot held on June 23, 2026, the CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative has entered its next major milestone with JazzCash commencing digital disbursements to selected widows and orphans across Punjab. The launch of digital payments marks the successful transition from beneficiary selection to financial assistance delivery, completing another key phase of one of Punjab’s most technologically advanced social welfare initiatives. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card is a collaborative initiative of the Government of Punjab, Zakat & Ushr Department, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), NADRA, Punjab Social Protection Authority (PSPA), Urban Unit, JazzCash, and other stakeholders to digitize the complete lifecycle of welfare assistance from citizen application and eligibility verification to transparent beneficiary selection and digital financial disbursement. During the computerized ballot ceremony, officials acknowledged the successful completion of the project’s technology implementation. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) Rashid Iqbal Nasrullah appreciated the PITB team for its continuous technical support throughout the implementation of the initiative within stringent timelines. He also specially acknowledged the prompt guidance and support extended by PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf at various stages of the project whenever required. Secretary, Zakat & Ushr Department, Irfan Ahmad Sandhu also commended the dedicated efforts of PITB in designing, developing, and operationalizing the comprehensive digital ecosystem supporting the Programme. He appreciated PITB’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of all assigned deliverables despite challenging timelines. Participants observed that the CM Punjab Rahmat Card is the first initiative of its kind undertaken by the Zakat & Ushr Department in terms of both scale and technological sophistication. By replacing conventional manual processes with integrated digital workflows, the Programme has introduced unprecedented levels of transparency, efficiency, accountability, and speed in the delivery of welfare assistance. As the technology implementation partner, PITB designed, developed, and operationalized the complete digital platform supporting the initiative. The digital ecosystem includes an online citizen application portal, an Android mobile application, a dedicated helpline for application support, inquiries, and complaints, a Beneficiary Management System, a multi-agency digital verification engine integrated with NADRA and Punjab Socio-Economic Registry (PSER) databases, automated scrutiny and eligibility determination workflows, a computerized district-wise balloting mechanism, and real-time monitoring and decision-support administrative dashboards. The end-to-end digital workflow enabled citizens to submit applications online, which were then verified through multiple government databases, assessed against approved eligibility criteria, allocated according to district quotas, and finally selected through a transparent computerized ballot before being transferred for digital disbursement through JazzCash. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative stands as a successful example of how digital public infrastructure can enable multiple government institutions to operate through a unified technology platform, facilitating data-driven decision-making, automated eligibility verification, transparent Programme execution, and secure digital payments. The project reinforces the Government of Punjab’s commitment to delivering technology-enabled, scalable, and accountable citizen services that improve the lives of vulnerable segments of society.

North Korean missile unit reportedly deploys to Russia for Ukraine war

Ukraine’s military intelligence claims that a North Korean missile unit has started deploying to western Russia, marking what could become a major expansion of military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. According to Ukrainian officials, the unit may eventually be equipped with up to 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers for use in attacks against Ukraine. Andrii Cherniak, an official with Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence, said around 90 North Korean personnel are expected to be stationed in Russia’s Voronezh region as part of the Russian military’s 112th Missile Brigade. He added that discussions between senior Russian and North Korean officials next month are expected to determine the final deployment plan and missile numbers. Ukraine says North Korea has already delivered another batch of 40 KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles along with military personnel. These missiles reportedly have a longer range and larger payload than Russia’s Iskander missiles, although Ukrainian military sources believe they are less accurate and have caused significant civilian casualties during previous strikes. The reported deployment comes as Russia has resumed using North Korean-made ballistic missiles after nearly a year. Ukrainian authorities say two such missiles were launched last week, including one that struck the village of Radushne in central Ukraine, reportedly killing at least five members of the same family. Ukraine remains heavily dependent on advanced air defence systems, particularly US-made Patriot batteries, to intercept ballistic missiles. Military analysts warn that an increase in North Korean missile supplies would place additional pressure on Ukraine’s already stretched air defence network, especially ahead of the winter months when Russia has previously targeted the country’s energy infrastructure. Cherniak said intelligence suggests Russia intends to integrate North Korean missile forces into its operations, although the exact role of North Korean personnel has not yet been confirmed. He also stated that about 9,500 North Korean troops remain in Russia’s Kursk region, though they are not currently taking part in direct combat operations against Ukraine. Russia and North Korea have strengthened military ties since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The two countries signed a mutual defence agreement in 2024, while Kyiv accuses Pyongyang of supplying millions of artillery shells, ballistic missiles and thousands of troops to support Russia’s war effort.

Suki Waterhouse reveals why she hasn’t watched Twilight yet

Suki Waterhouse has surprised fans by revealing that she has never watched her partner Robert Pattinson’s iconic performance as Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series. Although the couple have been together for several years and share a young daughter, Waterhouse admitted that she has yet to sit down and watch the blockbuster franchise that launched Pattinson to worldwide fame. During a recent podcast appearance, the actress and singer was asked a fun question about whether she was “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob,” referring to the famous love triangle at the center of the Twilight saga. Waterhouse responded with an unexpected confession, saying she had never actually seen the films. She admitted that despite the franchise’s massive popularity, she still has not watched Pattinson’s breakout role. However, she made it clear that she plans to change that in the future. She also joked that even without seeing the movies, she knew she had to support Edward. Laughing at her own answer, Waterhouse said she quickly realized she couldn’t choose the wrong side when discussing the franchise connected so closely to her partner. The actress explained that she has been waiting for the right moment to finally watch the films. Rather than viewing them by herself, she wants the experience to be more entertaining and personal. Waterhouse said she would love to watch the Twilight movies with Pattinson by her side so he could provide behind-the-scenes commentary and share stories from the making of the films. She also joked that she would happily watch them with friends, as long as someone was there to offer commentary throughout the experience. Pattinson portrayed the mysterious vampire Edward Cullen in the hugely successful Twilight series, which became a global cultural phenomenon after the first film was released in 2008. The franchise turned him into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and earned him a dedicated international fan base. While Pattinson has since built a career with a wide range of critically acclaimed performances, including independent films and major blockbusters, Twilight remains one of the defining chapters of his career. Waterhouse and Pattinson have kept their relationship largely out of the spotlight since they began dating. The pair rarely discuss their private lives publicly, choosing instead to focus attention on their respective careers. The couple welcomed their first child together in 2024 and have continued to maintain a low profile as parents. During the same conversation, Waterhouse also shared a glimpse into their supportive relationship. She revealed that Pattinson is always willing to help her prepare audition self-tapes, showing his encouragement for her acting career. Her comments offered fans a rare insight into their life together, highlighting not only their sense of humor but also the support they provide each other behind the scenes. While Waterhouse may not have seen Twilight yet, she made it clear that when she finally does, she wants the experience to be memorable—with Robert Pattinson offering commentary every step of the way.

Tom Holland admits Justin Bieber was his childhood obsession

Tom Holland has confessed that he once idolised Justin Bieber and even tried copying his look as a kid. The actor opened up about his childhood crush during a recent TV appearance. Speaking on Julian Shapiro-Barnum’s “Celebrity Substitute” show on Wednesday, the 30-year-old actor named Bieber as his biggest childhood obsession. He said he genuinely believed Bieber was the coolest person he’d ever seen at the time. Holland admitted he tried to style his hair just like Bieber’s when he was around 11 or 12 years old. He joked that the attempt didn’t go too well, since his hair simply wasn’t built for that look. The confession quickly caught fans’ attention online, with clips of the moment spreading across social media. Many pointed out that Holland’s admiration for Bieber actually predates their now-friendly relationship by more than a decade. The two stars famously connected during the COVID-19 lockdown, when they went live together on Instagram. During that stream, both artists openly praised each other’s work and expressed mutual admiration. Holland’s latest comments add a fun bit of context to that earlier friendship, showing his appreciation for Bieber started long before they ever crossed paths professionally. Fans have since revisited the old livestream clip, drawing comparisons between his teenage fandom and his adult friendship with the singer. On the professional front, Holland remains busy promoting his newest Marvel film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” The movie officially released on July 31 and has already crossed the billion-dollar mark at the global box office. Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker in the film, starring alongside his real-life wife, Zendaya. The couple’s on-screen and off-screen partnership has continued to draw significant attention from fans and media alike. With “Brand New Day” performing strongly worldwide, Holland’s star continues to rise both critically and commercially. His playful trip down memory lane, though, has given fans a lighter, more personal glimpse into the actor’s life outside the superhero suit.

Bushra Ansari clarifies viral remarks about Saira …

Senior Pakistani actress Bushra Ansari has clarified her recent remarks after social media pages linked a story she shared during a podcast to actors Saira Yousuf and Shehroz Sabzwari. Bushra Ansari, who remains popular for her acting as well as her personal vlogs, recently discussed an incident involving the marriage of the only son of close friends during a podcast conversation. However, some social media pages allegedly connected the story to Saira Yousuf and Shehroz Sabzwari. In her latest vlog, Bushra Ansari expressed surprise over the way her comments had been presented online. She explained that she had been talking about close friends who are associated with the banking sector and had never said that the people involved in the story were actors. According to the actress, she was discussing a couple whose marriage ended because of differences over living arrangements. She said the wife wanted to establish a separate home, while the husband was unwilling to leave his parents. Bushra Ansari said that some social media pages subsequently used pictures of Saira Yousuf and Shehroz Sabzwari alongside the story, creating the impression that she had been referring to the former couple. The veteran actress strongly rejected the interpretation and criticized what she described as misleading and negative social media reporting. She said that parts of conversations are sometimes taken out of context and presented in a way that creates an entirely different narrative. Bushra Ansari also came to Saira Yousuf’s defense, describing her as a respectable person and saying that she continues to maintain good relations with members of her former in-laws’ family. She further said that Saira shares a loving relationship with her daughter, Zahra, and suggested that the families involved understand their relationships better than outsiders speculating on social media. The actress questioned why she would use the names of people close to her while discussing an unrelated personal story. She emphasized that the people she had mentioned in the podcast were her banker friends and that the story had no connection to Saira Yousuf or Shehroz Sabzwari. Bushra Ansari’s clarification comes amid growing speculation surrounding celebrities on social media, where comments from interviews and podcasts can quickly be reshared without their original context. The actress urged people to avoid believing or spreading claims based on misleading interpretations and reiterated that her original comments were not about Saira Yousuf and Shehroz Sabzwari.
