Trump hints at sanctions on Chinese banks over Ira…

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has hinted that Chinese banks dealing with Iran could face American sanctions, raising fresh concerns over the future of one of the most important financial channels supporting Iran’s oil trade.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump was asked whether his administration could target Chinese banks involved in transactions with Iran. Rather than ruling out such action, he responded by questioning why anyone would assume the United States would not impose sanctions.

Trump also suggested that Washington does not necessarily reveal its plans before taking action, leaving open the possibility that the administration could expand its pressure campaign against Iranian trade and the financial institutions that facilitate it.

The warning comes at a sensitive time for relations between Washington and Beijing. China is Iran’s largest trading partner, while Iranian crude oil remains an important component of their economic relationship. Chinese companies and financial institutions play a significant role in processing payments connected to Iranian oil and other commercial transactions.

Any direct sanctions against major Chinese banks could therefore have consequences far beyond Iran. Financial institutions with significant exposure to the US banking system could face a difficult choice between maintaining business with Iran and protecting their access to American financial markets.

For Tehran, the impact could be substantial. Restrictions on Chinese banks could make it harder for Iranian businesses to receive payments, settle international transactions and maintain oil revenues. Such measures could further isolate Iran from the global financial system and increase pressure on its already restricted economy.

Washington has previously imposed sanctions on Chinese companies and entities accused of supporting Iran or facilitating transactions that the United States considers prohibited. However, major Chinese banks have so far largely avoided direct sanctions of the kind now being suggested.

Targeting a major Chinese financial institution would represent a significant escalation. It could also add another layer of tension to an already complicated US-China economic relationship, particularly as both countries remain engaged in disputes over trade, technology and strategic competition.

For now, the Trump administration has not announced sanctions against any major Chinese bank over dealings with Iran. The president’s remarks remain an indication rather than a formal policy announcement.

Still, the message from Washington is clear: Chinese financial institutions involved in Iran-related trade could increasingly find themselves under scrutiny.

The uncertainty is likely to be closely watched by oil traders, banks and governments across the region, as any major disruption to Iran-China financial channels could affect both Iranian oil exports and wider energy markets.

Nawaz Sharif calls for better governance in AJK

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has urged political parties to keep their differences within the bounds of democratic competition, saying political rivalry should never turn into personal hostility. Addressing a meeting of the PML-N Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) parliamentary party in Murree, Nawaz congratulated the candidates who won seats in the AJK elections and called for greater financial support for the region. He said the federal government should provide AJK with maximum possible development funds so that the territory can improve its infrastructure and public services. He also directed the party leadership to examine the reasons behind the defeat of several strong PML-N candidates and learn from the election results. Nawaz said the party had secured victories in two phases of the electoral process, describing the results as another expression of public confidence in the PML-N. However, he cautioned that the party must deliver on its promises to retain that trust. “If the PML-N fails to deliver, the people here will become disappointed,” he said. The former prime minister stressed the need to improve roads, hospitals and other basic facilities across AJK. He said children in the region should also have access to modern educational opportunities and technology, including laptops. Nawaz credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts for the country’s ongoing development, saying Pakistan was moving forward. He called for AJK to experience similar progress and said the region should develop along the lines of Punjab. He stressed that the PML-N could not afford to disappoint voters who had placed their confidence in the party. Nawaz also expressed concern over complaints that emerged during the political process involving the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He said he had not expected the PPP to provide an opportunity for complaints, particularly given that the party had previously led the AJK government. “Some complaints reached us, and I was saddened by them,” Nawaz said, while emphasising the need for political parties to maintain respectful relations despite their differences. He said previous AJK governments had failed to fully meet public expectations and stressed that improving the welfare and living standards of the region’s people should remain the top priority. Nawaz maintained that the PML-N would continue to focus on development and public service while working to strengthen its political position in AJK.

Law minister explains rules on Imran Khan’s pris…

ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar has defended the government’s position on meetings with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in prison. He said matters that are pending before the courts should generally not be debated in parliament. However, he noted that the Senate was discussing such issues. Tarar made the remarks during a Senate session. Lawmakers were debating Imran Khan’s health and concerns over restrictions on meetings with him. The minister said cases related to the May 9 incidents and other cases involving Imran Khan were before the courts. He said the PTI founder and other individuals had filed appeals against decisions in their cases. According to Tarar, several legal matters remain pending before different judicial forums. He said the delay in deciding appeals and cases was a broader problem within the judicial system. The law minister pointed to delays in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) cases. He said some NAB appeals had remained undecided for as long as six years. He said Imran Khan’s petitions and applications were also pending before the relevant courts. Therefore, he argued, those matters should be addressed through the judicial process. Tarar also referred to the cases involving former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. He said Sharif had been convicted by the courts and later challenged the decisions through appeals. He added that relief was subsequently granted to Sharif by the judiciary itself. The minister said this showed that legal disputes should be settled through the courts. The Senate debate also focused on Imran Khan’s access to visitors in prison. Tarar said prison authorities had to follow the jail manual. He said the rules applied to all prisoners and could not be changed for one individual. He argued that if special permission was given to one prisoner, similar requests from other prisoners would also have to be considered. The minister said the government wanted a system in which everyone was treated equally before the law. He referred to the principle that the powerful and ordinary citizens should stand on the same footing. His remarks came after opposition lawmakers demanded that the Senate discuss Imran Khan’s health and the restrictions on meetings with him. Senator Raja Nasir Abbas had specifically called for a discussion on the PTI founder’s health. The issue has remained a major point of political disagreement between the government and PTI. The opposition has repeatedly raised concerns about Imran Khan’s health and access to family members, lawyers and political leaders. Tarar maintained that the government’s position was based on existing legal and prison procedures. He said pending court cases should not be settled through political debate.

Sindh High Court forcibly retires senior civil jud…

The Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court has ordered the compulsory retirement of Senior Civil Judge Ayaz Ali after corruption allegations against him were found to be proven following a departmental inquiry. According to the inspection team, the inquiry established misconduct on the part of the senior civil judge. The investigation was carried out in detail by Inquiry Officer Justice Shamsuddin Abbasi, who examined the allegations and submitted his findings after completing the proceedings. The inspection team said the competent authority had initially recommended the judge’s dismissal from service. However, after conducting the final hearing and reviewing all available facts and evidence, the Chief Justice decided to impose the penalty of compulsory retirement instead of outright dismissal. Officials said the decision was made after completing all legal and administrative procedures related to the disciplinary case. The punishment was finalized following a comprehensive review of the inquiry report and the recommendations submitted by the relevant authorities. The inspection team further stated that the Sindh High Court’s order has come into immediate effect. As a result, Senior Civil Judge Ayaz Ali has been compulsorily retired from judicial service in accordance with the court’s disciplinary decision. The action reflects the judiciary’s internal accountability process, under which complaints of misconduct against judicial officers are investigated through formal inquiries before disciplinary measures are taken. The latest order concludes the proceedings against the senior civil judge and has been enforced with immediate effect.
