Karachi: Sindh Governor Nahal Hashmi has claimed that the death of young businessman Mir Raza Ali was not a case of suicide, stating that the victim had sustained four bullet wounds. His remarks came while addressing a ceremony held under the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Program in Karachi.

Speaking to students at the event, the governor said it was an honor to participate in the distribution of laptops, describing the initiative as a significant step toward empowering Pakistan’s youth through education and technology. He credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for prioritizing educational development and providing students with modern learning opportunities.

Hashmi emphasized the importance of education by referring to the Quranic command “Iqra” (Read), saying that knowledge is the foundation of progress. He added that equipping young people with laptops would help them develop the skills needed for the digital era and contribute to the country’s future.

Highlighting Pakistan’s technology ambitions, the governor said the country aims to achieve $25 billion in IT exports. He also praised the success of talented students from Karachi who recently established a company that was reportedly sold to Elon Musk for millions of dollars, calling it a source of pride for the nation.

The governor reiterated his support for national unity, stressing that Pakistan was founded as a free and sovereign state in line with the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He also clarified that he serves as a constitutional governor and remains committed to fulfilling his responsibilities under the Constitution.

Commenting on law and order, Hashmi urged authorities to further strengthen security measures in Karachi, noting that larger cities naturally face greater crime-related challenges. He said the city’s crime rate has improved significantly compared to previous years but acknowledged that more work is needed.

Referring to the ongoing investigation into Mir Raza Ali’s death, the governor stated that, according to the information available to him, the victim had been shot four times and had not died by suicide. He noted that the investigation is still underway and expressed sorrow over the loss of a young life, saying the final conclusions would depend on the outcome of the official probe.

    PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has rejected a proposed deduction of Rs6.4 billion from the province’s federal financial transfers. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the federal government had sought an additional amount from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa before the provincial budget. The provincial government had linked the release of the additional funds to a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan and his approval. Afridi said the KP government neither approved nor agreed to the proposed deduction of Rs6.4 billion. He said the additional federal grant had also not been included in the provincial budget for the 2026-27 financial year. The chief minister said the matter was not merely a political dispute but concerned the province’s constitutional and financial rights. He maintained that Article 164 of the Constitution does not give the federal government the authority to unilaterally deduct money payable to a province. According to Afridi, any such deduction requires a clear constitutional or legal basis as well as the consent of the provincial government. He said the Finance Department had clearly conveyed its disagreement with the proposed deduction in a letter issued on August 13. Written instructions were also issued that no deduction should be made without the province’s consent. Afridi said Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam immediately met the relevant officials of the Accountant General KP. The Accountant General of Pakistan Revenues was also directed not to record or implement any transaction without the clear consent of the provincial government. The chief minister said the provincial government had decided to prepare a summary and ordinance under the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) after the province did not receive its share for six months. He said the provincial government did not sign the memorandum of understanding concerning the additional amount because a meeting with the PTI founder was not arranged. Afridi said the KP government had already approached the Federal Constitutional Court to seek its constitutional rights under the National Finance Commission. He made it clear that the provincial government would not compromise on its NFC rights. The chief minister further said the federal government had no authority to unilaterally deduct money on the basis of an unapproved memorandum of understanding. He vowed that the provincial government would use every legal and constitutional avenue to protect its rights and defend every rupee of its financial share. Afridi also said that if the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) achieved its Rs15.26 trillion tax collection target, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s share would amount to approximately Rs175 billion. He added that providing the merged districts with their rightful share under the 11th NFC was also one of the provincial government’s conditions.

    52 life-saving drugs clear major approval hurdle

    ISLAMABAD: A federal cabinet subcommittee has approved the prices of 52 newly registered life-saving medicines, including treatments for cancer, diabetes, haemophilia and Parkinson’s disease, in a move aimed at improving access to essential medicines across Pakistan. The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb in Islamabad. The committee reviewed pricing proposals for newly registered medicines and approved the prices for all 52 products. Officials said the approved medicines include several advanced treatments for serious and chronic illnesses. Among them is Keytruda, a modern immunotherapy drug used globally to treat more than 20 types of cancer. Other approved medicines include Nivolumab, Dasatinib, Meropenem and insulin, which are widely used to treat cancer, severe infections and diabetes. The pricing decision will now be sent to the federal cabinet for final approval. Once endorsed, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) will issue an official price notification, allowing the medicines to be legally marketed and sold in the country. Health Ministry officials said early approval of medicine prices was necessary to address the difficulties faced by patients. Delays in pricing had prevented several newly registered medicines from entering the local market, forcing many patients to rely on unregistered, smuggled or costly imported alternatives. Authorities believe the approval will improve the availability of high-quality medicines and reduce dependence on illegal supply channels. They said the move will also help ensure that patients have access to safe and regulated treatments through authorised healthcare providers. During the meeting, the finance minister stressed the importance of transparency and protecting the public interest in decisions related to medicine pricing. He called for a fair pricing mechanism that balances patient affordability with the availability of essential medicines.

    LAHORE – Secretary/Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab Dr. Ehsan Bhutta has said that the great Sufi poet, scholar, thinker and luminous icon of Punjabi language and literature, Hazrat Syed Waris Shah (RA), through his timeless masterpiece Heer Waris Shah, gifted Punjabi literature not merely with an immortal work of art but with a universal message of love, humanity, tolerance, morality, spirituality, peace, compassion and the highest human values—a message that continues to resonate with extraordinary relevance and power even today. He expressed these views while inaugurating the newly established Waris Shah Heritage and Cultural Gallery at historic Jandiala Sher Khan, describing it as a landmark initiative to preserve, celebrate and transmit the magnificent literary, cultural and intellectual legacy of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) to future generations. Deputy Commissioner Rana Adil Tasawwur, Director Projects Rafiq Noor Wattoo, Zonal Administrator Rana Ehsan and other officers of the Auqaf Department were also present on the occasion. Dr. Bhutta said that the establishment of the gallery has given the sacred place associated with Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and Jandiala Sher Khan a distinctive new literary and cultural identity, while creating an important platform for showcasing the rich history, culture and heritage of Sheikhupura to visitors from Pakistan and abroad. He said the gallery presents, in a modern and engaging manner, the life, personality, intellectual vision, literary contributions and enduring masterpiece Heer of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA), while important characters from Heer Waris Shah, historical and cultural scenes, rare artefacts and traditional objects have also been thoughtfully incorporated to bring the era and social fabric of Punjab vividly to life. Special documentaries on Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and the history and culture of Sheikhupura will be screened through LCD displays, while traditional objects including the tawa, ghara, weighing scale, bow and other artefacts offer visitors an authentic glimpse into Punjab’s centuries-old social life, traditions and cultural heritage. He added that two specially produced documentaries are part of the gallery experience: the first explores the history, culture and historic heritage of Sheikhupura, while the second focuses on the life, personality, intellectual and literary services of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and the diverse dimensions of his masterpiece Heer. Dr. Bhutta said concerted efforts would be made to carry the thought, poetry and message of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) to younger generations through research, education, literary activities, cultural programmes, documentaries, heritage galleries and modern communication platforms, stressing that preserving history, keeping culture alive and highlighting the legacy of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) is, in essence, a powerful means of reconnecting young people with their language, literature, history and civilisational identity. He further said that the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) would bring 50 tourists from Qaddafi Stadium Lahore to Jandiala Sher Khan through its recreational bus service, particularly enabling young people to develop a deeper connection with their great Sufi poet, Punjabi language, history and cultural identity. The Waris Shah Heritage and Cultural Gallery, he added, would emerge as a distinctive intellectual, literary and tourism destination for tourists, students, researchers and all those with an interest in literature and culture. Dr. Bhutta said highlighting historic Jandiala Sher Khan and its associated heritage as a centre of Hazrat Waris Shah’s literary and cultural legacy remains among the priorities of the Auqaf Department, and the establishment of the gallery represents a practical expression of this vision. He said Hazrat Waris Shah (RA), who was associated with Jandiala Sher Khan, District Sheikhupura, devoted his life to knowledge, literature, spiritual thought and the promotion of human values; born in 1722 and passing away in 1798, he portrayed Punjab’s civilisation, culture, rural society, human emotions, social attitudes and spiritual consciousness with such depth and comprehensiveness that Heer Waris Shah transcended the boundaries of a romantic narrative and became an invaluable literary, social, cultural and intellectual document of Punjab. Through the profound symbolism of human love leading towards divine love, and through his penetrating observations on human weaknesses, social inequalities, moral values, peace, tolerance and the significance of human relationships, Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) occupies an unparalleled position among the great classical poets of Punjabi literature, while Heer also powerfully reflects themes of respect for women, human dignity and social justice. The Secretary Auqaf said that the poetry of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) presents love as a fundamental force of human existence and humanity as the foundation of social relationships, making his message of peace, affection, tolerance, pluralism, brotherhood and respect for human dignity exceptionally relevant in the contemporary world. He said Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) stands among the great custodians of Punjab’s Sufi, literary and intellectual tradition who used the power of thought and art to promote love, peace, tolerance, fraternity and the sanctity of human relationships, adding that preserving his historic and literary legacy is not merely a religious obligation but also a profound literary, historical, cultural and national responsibility. Dr. Bhutta said the shrine of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and its associated historic heritage constitute a precious part of Punjab’s identity; therefore, the Auqaf Department is paying special attention to the preservation of its sanctity, historic character and spiritual ambience, alongside improvements in beautification, repair, cleanliness, illumination, security and basic facilities for visitors. During his recent visit to the shrine, he also offered Fateha and prayers and reviewed the ongoing development and improvement works. He said historic manuscripts, records, artefacts and other cultural material associated with Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) represent priceless national, historical and literary assets, making initiatives such as heritage galleries and libraries vital for their preservation, documentation and transmission to future generations.     Bilawal urges Kashmiris to shape their own future

In a video message focusing on the Kashmiri people’s right to self-governance, Bilawal said his party was committed to ensuring that the residents of Azad Kashmir enjoy the same democratic rights as every citizen of Pakistan. “I want the people of Kashmir to receive the same rights that every Pakistani citizen enjoys,” Bilawal said, adding that the most fundamental of these rights is the right to sovereignty through the power of the vote. Explaining his vision, the PPP chairman said the true meaning of sovereignty is that every vote should be respected and accurately reflected in the election results. According to him, the public mandate must remain free from outside influence so that the will of the people prevails. Bilawal also stressed the need for greater representation of Azad Kashmir in national decision-making institutions.
