GAZA: At least six Palestinians have been killed and 37 others injured in fresh Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, adding to the mounting toll since the ceasefire in October 2025. The latest casualties were reported as attacks continued to affect different parts of the besieged territory. The deaths and injuries have once again raised concerns over the fragile situation in Gaza, where civilians continue to face the consequences of the prolonged conflict. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 4,000 wounded since the ceasefire began in October 2025. The ministry said that more than 800 bodies have also been recovered from various locations since the ceasefire. As the death toll continues to rise, attention remains focused on whether diplomatic efforts can restore lasting calm and protect civilians caught in the conflict.

Bilawal vows fight back after AJK election loss

PML-N secures 23 of 45 seats to form AJK government Information minister says rigging claims need real evidence Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said the countdown for the federal government has begun. He made the statement after his party won fewer seats than expected in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections. The PPP has called the polls rigged. The PML-N government at the centre relies on support from several parties. The PPP remains its main ally. But during the AJK elections, the PPP repeatedly claimed the polls were unfair. The PML-N has won a simple majority to form the government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The party secured 23 out of 45 seats. This was confirmed by Rana Sanaullah, adviser to the prime minister on political affairs. Bilawal addressed PML-N directly in a video message. He asked if they could hear a sound. He said it was the countdown for the federal government beginning. He also announced a public gathering in Bagh district. He called on supporters in Poonch to prepare for a rally on August 10. He told them to get ready for his arrival. Bilawal described the elections as neither free nor fair. He called them rigged, and used strong words like bullet elections and bloody elections. Despite the results, he praised his party workers. He said the PPP had won nine seats despite the difficult circumstances. He vowed to reclaim seats he said had been stolen in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad. He said the PPP would continue its struggle and would not lose courage or leave the field. Sindh minister and senior PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon issued a similar warning shortly before Bilawal spoke. Memon said the countdown for the federal government had begun. He claimed PML-N had given ballot papers to its candidates two days before voting, working together with the Election Commission. Memon also alleged that the administration was ignoring complaints from the current president and prime minister of AJK. He called it historic rigging. He questioned whether top PML-N leaders, including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Maryam Nawaz Sharif, had genuinely won their own seats in the 2024 elections. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar responded on Monday. He said accusations of rigging should not be made without solid evidence. He urged the PPP to show political maturity and accept the election results. His comments came a day after the second phase of voting was held in Muzaffarabad Division and refugee seats. Unofficial results showed PML-N leading in five constituencies, while PPP had won two. In the first phase, PML-N had already secured nine of the thirteen seats in Mirpur Division, with PPP winning four. Tarar said PPP should have worked harder, as it did during the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. He questioned the evidence behind Memon’s claims and said accusations should not be made without proof. He said the people of AJK voted for the party that focused on development. He advised PPP to reflect on its own performance in Sindh instead of blaming others. Tarar praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for congratulating PPP after its win in Gilgit-Baltistan. He called it an example of political tolerance. He said PML-N ran a united and strong campaign in AJK, led by Nawaz Sharif, which helped secure the party’s victory.

Europe to witness rare total solar eclipse today

A total solar eclipse is set to occur today, offering skywatchers across parts of Europe an opportunity to witness a rare astronomical phenomenon, according to Arab media reports. The eclipse is being described as the first total solar eclipse visible from Europe since 1999. The event will be particularly prominent in western Spain and Iceland, where observers will have the chance to see the Moon completely cover the Sun for a brief period. The total phase is expected to begin at around 6:27pm local time in the areas where the eclipse will be visible. Near Iceland, the period of totality is expected to last approximately two minutes and 18 seconds, making it one of the key locations for viewing the phenomenon. However, the eclipse will not be limited to areas experiencing totality. Several major European cities are expected to witness a significant partial eclipse. In Madrid and Barcelona, around 99% of the Sun’s disc will be obscured, while Paris is expected to experience approximately 92% coverage. London will see about 91% of the Sun covered, while Berlin is expected to experience an eclipse of around 85%. The exact appearance and timing of the eclipse will vary depending on the location of observers. Parts of Africa, Canada and the United States are also expected to witness the eclipse in its partial form, although the degree of visibility will differ from one region to another. Eclipse not visible in Pakistan Pakistanis will not be able to observe the solar eclipse, as the astronomical event will take place outside the country’s visible path. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has said that the eclipse will begin at approximately 8:34pm Pakistan Standard Time. It is expected to reach its maximum phase at around 10:46pm before ending at approximately 12:58am. Since the entire event will occur during nighttime in Pakistan, the eclipse will remain below the horizon and therefore cannot be seen from the country. The Meteorological Department has also indicated that another major astronomical event is expected later this month. A partial lunar eclipse is scheduled for August 28, but this event, too, will not be visible from Pakistan. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and temporarily blocks some or all of the Sun’s light from reaching certain parts of the Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the visible disc of the Sun for observers located within the narrow path of totality.

Messi fined by MLS after tense clash with Philadelphia star

MIAMI: Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer after becoming involved in a heated late-game confrontation with Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with Philadelphia. The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced the punishment on Friday, saying Messi had violated the league’s policy concerning players putting their hands to the face, head or neck of an opponent. The amount of the fine was not disclosed. Inter Miami teammate Ian Fray was also fined an undisclosed amount for the same violation, adding another disciplinary twist to an already tense encounter. The incident occurred deep into stoppage time on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Subaru Park. With the ball being played elsewhere, Messi approached Sullivan near the centre circle following an exchange between the players. Messi then made contact with Sullivan around the head and neck area. Sullivan responded by confronting the Argentine star, leading to a tense face-to-face exchange before officials intervened. Referee Filip Dujic had initially not seen the incident because his back was turned. He arrived shortly afterwards to separate the players but did not issue either Messi or Quinn Sullivan a card for the confrontation. The match later descended into further chaos in stoppage time. Quinn Sullivan became involved in another altercation with Inter Miami’s Ian Fray, while Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan and Miami midfielder Yannick Bright were also involved in the ensuing scuffle. Cavan Sullivan and Bright were both sent off, turning an already dramatic finish into a disciplinary flashpoint. Cavan Sullivan’s red-card suspension was later overturned on appeal, making him available for Philadelphia’s next match. Despite the controversy, Messi had a major influence on the match itself. He provided an assist before scoring Inter Miami’s second goal in the 26th minute, curling a left-footed effort into the corner. The goal was particularly emotional for the 39-year-old Argentine, as it was his first since returning to action following the death of his father, Jorge Messi. Philadelphia eventually fought back to earn a 2-2 draw, with Neil Pierre scoring in the second half to level the contest. For Messi, the match therefore ended on two very different notes: a memorable goal and assist on the field, followed by an unexpected disciplinary sanction. The MLS fine does not carry a suspension, but it serves as a reminder that even one of football’s biggest stars remains subject to the league’s conduct rules. With the regular season intensifying, both Messi and Inter Miami will now hope the incident remains a footnote rather than becoming a distraction from their push for success.

PTI leader Mian Mahmoodur Rashid shifted to servic…

LAHORE:Former Punjab minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mian Mahmoodur Rashid has reportedly developed health complications and was shifted from prison to Services Hospital in Lahore for medical treatment. According to party sources in Lahore, Mahmoodur Rashid was transferred to the hospital after his health condition deteriorated. The move was made to provide him with specialised medical care and allow doctors to carry out the necessary treatment. Party sources said that the PTI leader underwent surgery for a tumour located in his abdomen. The operation was performed at Services Hospital, where doctors treated the medical condition that had been causing him health concerns. Following the surgery, Mahmoodur Rashid was reportedly transferred back to the prison hospital for post-operative care and monitoring. His condition is being observed by medical staff as he recovers from the procedure. The development has attracted attention because Mahmoodur Rashid is a senior PTI figure and a former member of the Punjab provincial government. His health has previously been a matter of concern for his party, particularly while he has remained in custody. The party sources did not provide extensive details about the nature of the tumour, its size or whether it was benign or malignant. They also did not disclose further information regarding the exact duration of his hospital stay or the expected recovery period. Medical procedures involving abdominal tumours can require careful post-operative observation, particularly during the initial recovery period. The decision to keep the PTI leader under medical supervision after the operation indicates that doctors are continuing to monitor his condition. Mahmoodur Rashid has remained a prominent figure within PTI and has held important political responsibilities in Punjab. As a former provincial minister, he has been associated with the party’s political activities for several years. His transfer from prison to a major public-sector hospital highlights the medical arrangements made for prisoners who require treatment beyond the facilities available inside a jail. Prison authorities generally rely on external hospitals when inmates require specialised diagnostic procedures, surgery or other forms of treatment that cannot be adequately provided by a prison medical unit. According to the available information, the sequence of events involved his transfer from prison to Services Hospital, the surgical treatment of the abdominal tumour and his subsequent return to the prison hospital for continued care. The party sources did not indicate any immediate complications resulting from the surgery. Further information about his health is expected to depend on the medical assessment carried out by doctors during his recovery. PTI supporters and party members have expressed concern over the health of the former Punjab minister, particularly because he is currently in custody and requires ongoing medical attention. The development comes as several PTI leaders and workers remain involved in legal and political proceedings following the party’s prolonged confrontation with the government and state institutions. Mahmoodur Rashid has remained among the senior party figures facing legal proceedings. For now, his recovery and medical condition are being monitored by healthcare professionals. The latest reports indicate that after undergoing surgery for the abdominal tumour at Services Hospital, he has been moved to the prison hospital, where he will continue to receive medical care. Further details about his condition, the outcome of the surgery and his recovery timeline are expected to emerge as doctors continue their assessment.
