Waris Shah Heritage Gallery opens in Jandiala Sher Khan

LAHORE – Secretary/Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab Dr. Ehsan Bhutta has said that the great Sufi poet, scholar, thinker and luminous icon of Punjabi language and literature, Hazrat Syed Waris Shah (RA), through his timeless masterpiece Heer Waris Shah, gifted Punjabi literature not merely with an immortal work of art but with a universal message of love, humanity, tolerance, morality, spirituality, peace, compassion and the highest human values—a message that continues to resonate with extraordinary relevance and power even today.

He expressed these views while inaugurating the newly established Waris Shah Heritage and Cultural Gallery at historic Jandiala Sher Khan, describing it as a landmark initiative to preserve, celebrate and transmit the magnificent literary, cultural and intellectual legacy of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) to future generations.

Deputy Commissioner Rana Adil Tasawwur, Director Projects Rafiq Noor Wattoo, Zonal Administrator Rana Ehsan and other officers of the Auqaf Department were also present on the occasion. Dr. Bhutta said that the establishment of the gallery has given the sacred place associated with Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and Jandiala Sher Khan a distinctive new literary and cultural identity, while creating an important platform for showcasing the rich history, culture and heritage of Sheikhupura to visitors from Pakistan and abroad.

He said the gallery presents, in a modern and engaging manner, the life, personality, intellectual vision, literary contributions and enduring masterpiece Heer of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA), while important characters from Heer Waris Shah, historical and cultural scenes, rare artefacts and traditional objects have also been thoughtfully incorporated to bring the era and social fabric of Punjab vividly to life.

Special documentaries on Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and the history and culture of Sheikhupura will be screened through LCD displays, while traditional objects including the tawa, ghara, weighing scale, bow and other artefacts offer visitors an authentic glimpse into Punjab’s centuries-old social life, traditions and cultural heritage.

He added that two specially produced documentaries are part of the gallery experience: the first explores the history, culture and historic heritage of Sheikhupura, while the second focuses on the life, personality, intellectual and literary services of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and the diverse dimensions of his masterpiece Heer.

Dr. Bhutta said concerted efforts would be made to carry the thought, poetry and message of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) to younger generations through research, education, literary activities, cultural programmes, documentaries, heritage galleries and modern communication platforms, stressing that preserving history, keeping culture alive and highlighting the legacy of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) is, in essence, a powerful means of reconnecting young people with their language, literature, history and civilisational identity.

He further said that the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) would bring 50 tourists from Qaddafi Stadium Lahore to Jandiala Sher Khan through its recreational bus service, particularly enabling young people to develop a deeper connection with their great Sufi poet, Punjabi language, history and cultural identity.

The Waris Shah Heritage and Cultural Gallery, he added, would emerge as a distinctive intellectual, literary and tourism destination for tourists, students, researchers and all those with an interest in literature and culture.

Dr. Bhutta said highlighting historic Jandiala Sher Khan and its associated heritage as a centre of Hazrat Waris Shah’s literary and cultural legacy remains among the priorities of the Auqaf Department, and the establishment of the gallery represents a practical expression of this vision.

He said Hazrat Waris Shah (RA), who was associated with Jandiala Sher Khan, District Sheikhupura, devoted his life to knowledge, literature, spiritual thought and the promotion of human values; born in 1722 and passing away in 1798, he portrayed Punjab’s civilisation, culture, rural society, human emotions, social attitudes and spiritual consciousness with such depth and comprehensiveness that Heer Waris Shah transcended the boundaries of a romantic narrative and became an invaluable literary, social, cultural and intellectual document of Punjab.

Through the profound symbolism of human love leading towards divine love, and through his penetrating observations on human weaknesses, social inequalities, moral values, peace, tolerance and the significance of human relationships, Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) occupies an unparalleled position among the great classical poets of Punjabi literature, while Heer also powerfully reflects themes of respect for women, human dignity and social justice.

The Secretary Auqaf said that the poetry of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) presents love as a fundamental force of human existence and humanity as the foundation of social relationships, making his message of peace, affection, tolerance, pluralism, brotherhood and respect for human dignity exceptionally relevant in the contemporary world. He said Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) stands among the great custodians of Punjab’s Sufi, literary and intellectual tradition who used the power of thought and art to promote love, peace, tolerance, fraternity and the sanctity of human relationships, adding that preserving his historic and literary legacy is not merely a religious obligation but also a profound literary, historical, cultural and national responsibility.

Dr. Bhutta said the shrine of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) and its associated historic heritage constitute a precious part of Punjab’s identity; therefore, the Auqaf Department is paying special attention to the preservation of its sanctity, historic character and spiritual ambience, alongside improvements in beautification, repair, cleanliness, illumination, security and basic facilities for visitors. During his recent visit to the shrine, he also offered Fateha and prayers and reviewed the ongoing development and improvement works. He said historic manuscripts, records, artefacts and other cultural material associated with Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) represent priceless national, historical and literary assets, making initiatives such as heritage galleries and libraries vital for their preservation, documentation and transmission to future generations.

The Government of Punjab and the Auqaf Department, he added, are taking effective measures to preserve and develop the shrines of the province’s Sufi saints and spiritual luminaries not only as places of religious devotion but also as significant centres of Punjab’s history, literature and cultural heritage. Dr. Ehsan Bhutta concluded that the timeless message of Hazrat Waris Shah (RA) continues to remind humanity that love, compassion, tolerance, harmony, peace and respect for human dignity are the true foundations of a strong, cohesive and peaceful society, and preserving his magnificent intellectual and literary legacy and passing it on to generations yet to come is a shared responsibility of us all.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan expects to receive a response from the United States within the next few months on its request for a proposed $10 billion bilateral exchange stabilisation facility. The proposed arrangement is aimed at strengthening confidence in Pakistan’s currency and foreign exchange market. It could also help the country improve access to international capital markets and attract more private investment. Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad said discussions between Pakistan and the US over the proposed facility had been constructive. He said the facility could act as a financial backstop for Pakistan and send a positive signal to investors about the stability of the country’s currency market. Pakistan formally approached US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last month for the proposed Bilateral Exchange Stabilisation Support Facility. The arrangement could have a maturity period of up to five years. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has clarified that the proposed $10 billion arrangement should not be viewed as a conventional loan or credit line. He said the main objective was to provide confidence regarding exchange-rate and currency stability. Such a signal, he added, could help Pakistan return to international markets to raise funds. The finance minister said the request was being considered by the US Treasury Department and that progress was expected by September. If approved, the facility could strengthen Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves and ease pressure on the rupee. It could also reduce the country’s dependence on multilateral financing. The proposed support comes as Pakistan continues efforts to improve its external financial position under an International Monetary Fund programme. The IMF programme has required the government to implement difficult fiscal and monetary measures, including higher taxes, spending controls and structural reforms. Pakistan has also been seeking to improve its economic and diplomatic engagement with Washington. Its recent diplomatic role in regional developments has increased expectations that stronger relations with the United States could lead to greater economic cooperation. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s credit outlook received a boost after Moody’s upgraded its sovereign rating from Caa1 to B3. However, the rating agency maintained that Pakistan continues to face challenges related to governance, rule of law, corruption control and government effectiveness. Although the B3 rating represents an improvement, it remains well within the speculative category and is several levels below investment grade.

    GCU Lahore goes fully paperless in major digital s…

    LAHORE: Government College University (GCU) Lahore has officially moved its administrative operations to a fully paperless digital system, marking a major step towards modernising governance and reducing reliance on traditional office files. The transformation has been achieved through the implementation of the e-Filing and Office Automation System, a cloud-based digital platform developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). The system has been provided to the university free of cost under special directions from the Punjab government, according to university officials. Under the new framework, administrative processes across GCU’s departments will now be handled online through a single digital platform. Routine matters such as leave applications, travel permissions, annual performance reports, official orders and departmental correspondence can now be processed electronically. The university said the system would also cover digital note sheets for proposals between departments, approval of payments for visiting faculty, purchase requests and agendas for departmental meetings. No more files moving from desk to desk One of the most significant changes will be the elimination of the traditional practice of physically moving files from one office to another. Instead, officials will be able to create, review, approve and track documents digitally through the cloud-based platform. This is expected to improve administrative efficiency while making it easier to monitor the progress of official matters. GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammad Umar Chaudhry described the transition as more than an environmental initiative, saying digital governance was essential for a modern educational institution. He said moving administrative affairs away from paper would strengthen transparency, speed and accountability, while reducing delays associated with manual file tracking. According to the vice chancellor, removing routine administrative delays would allow faculty members and heads of departments to devote more time to teaching and research. Part of wider digital transformation The university said the paperless initiative is part of a broader digitalisation drive launched during the previous academic year under the vice chancellor’s leadership. Before implementing the complete e-office system, GCU had introduced online approval mechanisms for student society events and digital billing for payments to visiting faculty members. The administration is now preparing to take the process further with the planned launch of a comprehensive e-Services Portal. The upcoming platform is expected to streamline requests related to campus maintenance and other facilities. Officials hope the system will allow infrastructure-related problems to be reported and addressed more quickly without disrupting academic activities. Alumni records also going digital GCU’s digital reforms are not limited to current campus operations. The university is also working on a major project to digitise the records of its alumni, expanding technology-based management beyond day-to-day administration. The move towards a paperless campus could ultimately reduce paperwork, improve record management and provide university officials with faster access to important information. With administrative processes increasingly moving online, GCU Lahore is positioning itself as an example of how Pakistan’s public-sector universities can use digital technology to make governance faster, more transparent and more efficient.

    Supreme Court reserves verdict on diyat amount

    The Supreme Court of Pakistan has reserved its decision on an important legal question concerning the determination of diyat, or blood money, in murder cases. A bench of the apex court reserved the verdict while hearing an appeal filed by convict Nadeem Khan. The case focuses on the amount of diyat payable and the point in time that should be used to determine its value. During the hearing, the convict’s lawyer argued that his client had already completed his prison sentence for the murder conviction and was now serving additional imprisonment because he had not paid the required diyat. Prosecutor Arshad Hussain told the court that the case was the first of its kind and that a High Court judgment already exists regarding the determination of the amount. He informed the court that the current diyat amount stands at around Rs197 million (Rs19.7 million). Justice Hashim Kakar asked whether the diyat should be calculated according to its value at the time of the offence, the accused’s arrest, or the time of conviction and sentencing. Justice Salahuddin remarked that making the financial consequences of murder more serious might discourage people from committing such offences. He also noted that Saudi Arabia continues to use 100 camels as the traditional basis for diyat. Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim observed that delays in deciding cases reflect shortcomings in the justice system and said an accused should not suffer because of institutional delays. In response, Prosecutor Arshad Hussain argued that certain legal matters, such as determining a person’s age, are assessed from the time of arrest, suggesting that a similar principle could apply in determining the relevant period for diyat. The Supreme Court directed all prosecutors concerned to submit their written arguments on the matter. After receiving the submissions, the court will issue its decision on how and when the amount of diyat should be determined.

    Police officer martyred in gun attack near Jamali …

    A police officer was martyred after unidentified gunmen opened fire on two policemen near Jamali Bridge on Karachi’s Super Highway on Monday. The attack has prompted senior police officials and the Sindh government to order an immediate investigation and intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible. According to police, the two officers were deployed on duty near Jamali Bridge when unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle approached and opened indiscriminate fire. Constable Zaman, who was serving at Site-A Police Station, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. His fellow officer survived the attack without injury. Authorities have not yet confirmed the motive behind the shooting, and an investigation is underway to determine whether the incident was a targeted attack or linked to other criminal activity. Police have begun collecting evidence from the crime scene and reviewing available information to identify the suspects. Following the incident, Inspector General (IG) Sindh Javed Alam Odho took immediate notice of the attack and directed the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) East to submit a detailed report without delay. The IG instructed law enforcement officials to ensure that those involved in the attack are arrested and brought to justice as quickly as possible. The police chief also ordered investigators to utilize all available resources, including modern technology, intelligence networks, and investigative tools, to trace and capture the suspects. He further directed police units to strengthen patrolling, checkpoint operations, and snap checking across the area while maintaining strict surveillance of suspicious individuals and vehicles. Separately, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar also sought an immediate report from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East regarding the incident. He emphasized that every available resource should be employed to identify and arrest the attackers and ensure they face the full force of the law. The home minister instructed police to make effective use of intelligence information, forensic techniques, and modern investigative methods during the operation. He also called for enhanced police patrols, tighter security measures, and increased monitoring of suspicious activity to prevent similar incidents. Paying tribute to the fallen officer, Lanjar said the sacrifice of police personnel would not be forgotten and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to pursuing those responsible. The attack highlights the continued security challenges faced by law enforcement officers in Karachi, where police personnel remain on the frontline against crime and violence. Investigations into the shooting are ongoing, and authorities have yet to announce any arrests.
