The federal government has increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, while petrol pump owners have announced a nationwide strike after failing to reach an agreement with the government over the newly introduced daily fuel pricing system.

Under the latest notification, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has increased by Rs7.15 per litre, rising from Rs360.06 to Rs367.21. The price of petrol has also been increased by Rs4.93 per litre, taking it from Rs315.80 to Rs320.73. The revised prices came into effect on July 22.

The increase follows the government’s decision to replace the previous fortnightly fuel price adjustment system with a daily pricing mechanism. Under the new policy, petroleum prices can now change every day depending on international oil prices and fluctuations in the exchange rate.

The new pricing mechanism has been strongly opposed by petrol pump owners and fuel dealers. They argue that daily price revisions are difficult to implement and create financial uncertainty for retailers across the country.

After negotiations with government officials failed, the All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning at midnight on Wednesday. The association said petrol pumps across Pakistan would remain closed until the government accepts its demands.

Association leaders said discussions with the Petroleum Ministry failed to resolve major issues, including dealer profit margins and the implementation of daily fuel pricing. They insisted that the current system is not practical for petrol station operators and would create serious operational challenges.

The Petroleum Retailers Association has also expressed support for the strike, raising concerns about possible disruptions in fuel supplies if the dispute continues.

Meanwhile, the All Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) is expected to decide whether it will formally join the protest. The association has called a meeting of its executive committee to discuss the situation and determine its future course of action.

PPDA officials said they had already shared their concerns with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). According to the association, the regulator requested additional time to present the dealers’ concerns to the government before any final decision is made.

Fuel dealers believe daily price changes make it difficult to manage inventories, update fuel prices, and maintain smooth business operations. They argue that the previous fortnightly pricing system provided greater stability and reduced uncertainty for both retailers and consumers.

The government, however, maintains that the daily pricing mechanism will ensure that domestic fuel prices more closely reflect changes in global oil markets. Officials believe the new system will improve transparency and allow quicker adjustments to international price movements.

      ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly rejected India’s remarks at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) concerning the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and allegations of terrorism, describing them as an attempt to misrepresent facts and divert attention from issues raised by Pakistan. The response came after India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism and suggested that the issue had affected bilateral cooperation under the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan dismissed these allegations during the UNSC’s High-Level Open Debate on “Natural Resource Governance: The Foundation of Peace, Security and Prosperity.” Speaking in a right of reply, Pakistan’s First Secretary to the UN, Ansar Shah, said India’s statement was misleading and represented a futile effort to distort the facts surrounding the treaty and regional security issues. He maintained that the Indus Waters Treaty remains legally valid and binding, rejecting India’s claim that the agreement could be placed in abeyance through unilateral action. Shah stated that the treaty contains no provision allowing either party to suspend or set it aside on its own. He referred to the Court of Arbitration’s August 2025 award, which, according to Pakistan, reaffirmed that the treaty continues to remain fully in force along with its dispute resolution mechanisms. He argued that India’s unilateral approach violated the terms of the agreement as well as established principles of international law. Pakistan also accused India of using shared water resources as a political tool. Shah said any attempt to weaponise water for political pressure or to restrict water access would amount to a serious breach of international legal obligations and norms. He added that such actions could undermine regional stability and pose risks to international peace and security, making the issue relevant to discussions at the Security Council. Responding to India’s allegations regarding terrorism, Shah rejected the accusations and instead claimed that India was attempting to conceal its own involvement in activities that Pakistan says have contributed to terrorism within its borders. He alleged that militant groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and the Majeed Brigade had been responsible for attacks that claimed the lives of thousands of Pakistani civilians and security personnel, including women and children. Pakistan reiterated its long-standing allegation that India supports and finances these groups, a claim India has consistently denied. Shah also referred to reports of alleged extraterritorial operations involving India, saying such incidents had raised international concerns. He further argued that India could not portray itself solely as a victim of terrorism while ignoring accusations directed against it. Addressing the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Shah said the people of the region continue to be denied their right to self-determination. He maintained that the territory remains internationally recognised as disputed and asserted that no unilateral measures could alter its legal or historical status. He also urged India to fulfil its obligations under the UN Charter and implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Earlier in the debate, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, reaffirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty remains effective and legally binding. He called on the UN Security Council to remain vigilant against the misuse or weaponisation of natural resources and encouraged greater use of preventive diplomacy, peaceful dispute resolution, monitoring mechanisms, and other international measures to prevent disputes over shared resources from escalating into broader conflicts.

    WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated after Washington launched strikes against Iranian targets following a ballistic missile attack on a US military base in Jordan. US Central Command said its forces began the strikes at around 8pm Eastern Time on Wednesday. CENTCOM described the operation as a “powerful response” to attempted attacks against American forces in the Middle East. The strikes came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for operations targeting US military assets in Jordan. The IRGC said it had targeted an airbase and a command centre. US President Donald Trump had earlier warned that Iran would face a strong military response. Trump said the United States would hit Iran “very hard” after the attack, despite reports that US forces had intercepted the missiles. The latest developments have raised fears of a wider regional conflict. Military activity has also been reported across southern Iran. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported explosions in Bushehr province, home to the country’s only nuclear power plant. Several explosions were also reported on Qeshm Island. Iranian media said a missile may have struck a residential area, although details about casualties were not immediately available. Other explosions were reported at several locations in southern Iran following the launch of the US operation. The conflict has also intensified around Iraq. Baghdad condemned US and Saudi strikes that reportedly killed members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces. The group said at least 20 of its fighters were killed and 32 others were wounded. Iranian media separately reported that four Iranian advisers were killed in the strikes. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz has also become increasingly tense. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said its naval forces targeted three oil tankers that were allegedly approaching the strategic waterway using routes not approved by Tehran. Iran has rejected an Omani proposal concerning shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has also discussed imposing charges on vessels using the strategically important passage. Iranian officials have insisted that mine-clearing operations in the waterway should be carried out by Iranian forces. Tehran has warned that any European involvement could turn those forces into potential targets. The latest escalation comes only days after Trump said Washington was holding what he described as positive talks with Iran. He had also warned that military action could resume if Tehran failed to show seriousness in negotiations. Analysts have warned that continued retaliation could create a dangerous cycle of escalation. They say repeated strikes could eventually expand beyond military targets and increase the risk to civilians and critical infrastructure.
