Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has called for a more supportive regulatory framework to expand electronic transactions, improve digital access to finance and accelerate Pakistan’s broader digital transformation.

The minister made these remarks during a meeting with Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA) Chairperson Dr Sohail Munir, where the two discussed digital finance, technology-driven economic activity and the development of Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Finance, Aurangzeb stressed that existing regulations must evolve alongside technological advancements and new business models.

The meeting focused on creating an environment that recognises electronic transactions and encourages greater use of digital systems in trade and financial activities. The participants also examined ways to improve access to finance by expanding digital platforms and making financial procedures more efficient.

Aurangzeb particularly highlighted the need to simplify customer onboarding, strengthen data-sharing systems and improve the interoperability of financial information. Greater integration between banks and capital markets was also discussed, with the aim of making investment opportunities more accessible to ordinary citizens.

The minister said streamlined digital account-opening procedures could encourage wider participation in the capital market. Better connections between banking and capital-market systems, he added, could increase investor participation and improve access to investment opportunities.

The meeting also covered the importance of connecting government data systems. According to the ministry, better-integrated data could help policymakers improve planning, policy formulation and decision-making. The increased use of technology and artificial intelligence was identified as another opportunity to improve the efficiency of government and financial services.

Digital infrastructure was another key area of discussion. Aurangzeb emphasised that new initiatives should be practical, scalable and consistent with Pakistan’s wider digital transformation goals. Digital assets and tokenisation were also discussed, particularly their possible applications in real estate and other investment sectors. Participants stressed that appropriate regulations and supporting mechanisms would be necessary for the responsible adoption of emerging technologies.

Aurangzeb appreciated the work of the Pakistan Digital Authority and called for practical, high-impact initiatives that could improve efficiency, expand financial access and strengthen the country’s digital capabilities. He also emphasised continued coordination among relevant stakeholders to ensure steady progress in Pakistan’s digital economy.

Pakistan has already witnessed significant growth in digital payments. According to the State Bank of Pakistan, retail payments through the banking system reached 3.7 billion transactions during January-March 2026, representing a 9% increase from the previous quarter. Digital channels accounted for 92% of total retail payment volumes, processing around 3.4 billion transactions worth Rs68.3 trillion.

Mobile banking and digital wallet registrations exceeded 132 million by March 2026, rising 37% year-on-year. Nearly half of Pakistan’s 268 million bank accounts were connected to a mobile banking application or digital wallet.

Meanwhile, Raast processed 742 million transactions worth Rs23.27 trillion during the quarter, reflecting growing public acceptance of instant digital payments. Mobile wallets such as Easypaisa and JazzCash have also expanded access to basic financial services, particularly for people previously underserved by traditional banking.

Merchant adoption is growing as well. QR-enabled merchants more than tripled during FY25, rising from 516,000 in FY24 to more than 1.9 million by the end of 2025. Although digital adoption remains stronger in urban areas, the figures indicate that Pakistan’s digital financial ecosystem is expanding rapidly.

The visit comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Gulf region, giving the meetings added diplomatic significance. However, Pakistani officials said the agenda extends beyond the current regional situation and is aimed at reinforcing the long-term strategic partnership between Islamabad and Riyadh. The Foreign Office added that the visit will help deepen bilateral relations, expand cooperation in areas of shared interest and enhance collaboration at multilateral forums. Prime Minister Shehbaz last visited Saudi Arabia in April, where he held meetings with the kingdom’s top leadership to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional developments.

    Punjab to modernize Civil Defence with Rs500m equipment

    Lahore – Under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for a “Safe Punjab,” the Civil Defence Resilience Corps is being modernized in line with contemporary requirements to help establish a safer society and respond effectively to emergencies. In this regard, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi visited the Civil Defence Headquarters where a smartly turned-out Civil Defence contingent presented him with a guard of honour. The Home Secretary inspected a display of modern equipment and also inaugurated a renovated block of the headquarters. On the occasion, Director Civil Defence Tasneem Ali Khan and Zigham Nawaz briefed the Punjab Home Secretary on the capacity, modern equipment and rescue capabilities of Civil Defence. The modern equipment displayed by Civil Defence included aerial-lift drones, IED bomb-disposal drones, bomb-disposal robots, anti-drone guns, electric sirens, bomb-disposal suits, bomb blankets, mine detectors, snake cameras, hook-and-line kits, mobile bomb-disposal bikes and advanced firefighting equipment. Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi said that the Civil Defence Resilience Corps is an important step toward a safe, capable and responsible Punjab. He said the Punjab government is taking practical measures to bring Civil Defence in line with the requirements of the modern era. He said that modern equipment worth Rs500 million has been purchased to modernize Civil Defence. He added that the advanced aerial-lift drones are capable of rescuing people trapped in difficult-to-access areas and can carry loads of up to 200 kilograms. Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi said that Civil Defence is equally important during both peace and wartime and serves as the first line of response for district administrations during any emergency situation. The Punjab Home Secretary said that the Chief Minister has increased the honorarium of Civil Defence volunteers in recognition of their services and performance. He urged citizens to join Civil Defence as volunteers according to their abilities. According to him, more than 350,000 citizens have so far registered as Civil Defence volunteers. The Home Secretary said that all Civil Defence volunteers are being provided with Basic Life Support (BLS) training so that they can provide timely assistance to save lives during natural disasters, accidents and medical emergencies. He appealed to citizens to become part of Civil Defence by registering as volunteers through the online portal VCD.HOME.GOP.PK.

    PM directs MDCAT delay, admission test rescheduled…

    ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has postponed the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) 2026 on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, giving thousands of aspiring medical students additional time before the nationwide examination. According to an official statement issued by the PM&DC, the entrance test, originally scheduled for August 16, will now be held on September 20, 2026. The council said the decision was made to ensure the examination is conducted in a more organized, secure, transparent, and candidate-friendly manner. Officials emphasized that the revised schedule is intended to improve overall arrangements while maintaining the integrity of the admission process. PM&DC clarified that, apart from the change in the examination date, all previously announced terms, conditions, and examination arrangements will remain unchanged. Any further revisions, if required, will be communicated through a separate official notification. The council has advised candidates, parents, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to regularly monitor its official website and communication channels for updated information, instructions, and announcements related to the examination. Expressing regret over any inconvenience caused by the postponement, PM&DC thanked students and stakeholders for their patience and cooperation.

According to Sania, tensions escalated after Imad informed his mother about the pregnancy. She alleged that family disputes intensified and eventually led to serious marital conflict. She further claimed that she felt isolated throughout the marriage because her own family remained in the UK. Sania also alleged that she received threats during her pregnancy and said the situation continued to deteriorate. Sania claimed that Imad later proposed relocating to the UK so the family could start a new life together. She said she agreed, believing their relationship could improve. However, she alleged that after arriving in Britain, Imad informed her through legal representatives that he intended to end the marriage before leaving her at her mother’s home. She said she endured months of emotional distress while trying to save the marriage and claimed she continued receiving legal correspondence during that period. Sania also alleged that she supported Imad during a difficult period in his life and remained committed to the relationship despite ongoing challenges. Discussing one of the most emotional moments of her interview, Sania claimed that Imad had arranged a medical appointment related to terminating her pregnancy. She alleged that although a doctor allowed him to hear the unborn baby’s heartbeat, he still insisted on proceeding with the abortion. According to her, she was three months pregnant at the time. She claimed she was given an injection, lost consciousness and later discovered that the pregnancy had been terminated. Sania said the incident remains the most painful experience of her life and that she does not believe she will ever be able to forgive it. She added that her main focus now is raising her children and praying for their success and well-being.
