KARACHI: Karachi lit up in a striking display of friendship and solidarity after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed a defence agreement in Makkah, with prominent government and historic buildings decorated in the colours and flags of the three countries.

The city’s landmarks were transformed with special lighting, creating a festive atmosphere as Pakistanis welcomed the development involving the two brotherly Muslim countries.

The Sindh Assembly building became one of the most prominent symbols of the occasion, with the national flags of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye displayed prominently on the building.

The Sindh Secretariat was also illuminated with specially arranged lights reflecting the colours associated with the three nations. The decorations gave the government complex a distinctive appearance and drew attention from people passing through the area.

Another major attraction was Karachi’s historic Frere Hall, which was illuminated with colourful lights to mark the defence agreement. The landmark’s nighttime appearance quickly caught the attention of residents and visitors, adding a celebratory touch to the city.

Flags of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye were also displayed along important roads and at other prominent locations across Karachi.

The coordinated decorations were aimed at expressing solidarity with the three countries and highlighting their longstanding fraternal ties.

The development comes as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye seek to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The defence agreement signed in Makkah has drawn considerable attention in Pakistan, particularly because of the close political, economic and strategic relationships among the three countries.

For Karachi, however, the agreement was reflected not through speeches or official statements alone but through the city’s skyline and landmarks.

From the Sindh Assembly to Frere Hall, the green, red and national colours created a powerful visual message of friendship.

The illuminated landmarks offered residents a memorable glimpse of the occasion, turning parts of Karachi into a colourful tribute to the growing bonds among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

    Court sets August 18 for Rajab Butt indictment

    LAHORE: A sessions court in Lahore has fixed August 18 for the indictment of TikToker Rajab Butt and four other suspects in a case involving allegations of sexual assault against a social media influencer. Additional District and Sessions Judge Zafaryab heard the private complaint filed by the woman against Butt and the other suspects. The court directed all five accused to appear on the next hearing date for formal framing of charges. The complaint was filed in 2025. The woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted and later subjected to blackmail by the suspects. She told the court that she had evidence to support her allegations. The material reportedly includes WhatsApp conversations, a medical report and a statement recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The accused have denied the allegations. They had previously obtained pre-arrest bail from a sessions court while the proceedings continued. The case is separate from another criminal complaint recently registered against Butt and some of his associates. Last month, police registered a case after an alleged confrontation at a café involving several women. The same woman who filed the earlier sexual assault complaint also approached police over the café incident. She alleged that Butt attacked her and other women during the altercation. The latest court proceedings add to the growing number of legal cases involving the social media personality. Butt has faced proceedings over several allegations in recent years. These include accusations related to hurting religious sentiments, promoting online gambling and physical assault. He has denied the allegations in the relevant cases. The court will now hear the matter on August 18. The appearance of Butt and the other suspects will mark the next stage of proceedings, when the court is scheduled to formally frame charges.

Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Barrister Gohar said that instead of forming more governments under the existing circumstances, the leadership should return to the people and seek a fresh public mandate. He claimed that a key coalition partner had publicly described the prime minister as the beneficiary of a rigged election. According to Gohar, such a statement should have prompted the prime minister to immediately seek a vote of confidence in the National Assembly. The PTI chairman argued that the prime minister failed to obtain a vote of confidence and had therefore lost the moral legitimacy to continue in office. He added that the prime minister’s silence on the issue reflected a loss of political support and public confidence.     The federal government has announced a reduction in petroleum prices, lowering the cost of petrol by Rs. 4.08 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs. 2.45 per litre. The revised prices will come into effect from August 4, providing some relief to consumers amid easing international oil prices. According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the new price of petrol has been fixed at Rs. 331.95 per litre, while high-speed diesel will now be available at Rs. 389.93 per litre. The latest revision follows a decline in global crude oil prices after geopolitical tensions in the Middle East showed signs of easing. Despite the reduction, the government continues to impose substantial taxes and duties on petroleum products. Petrol carries approximately Rs. 110 per litre in taxes and levies, while diesel is subject to Rs. 96 per litre in government charges. Fuel prices had surged sharply earlier this year following heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, which raised concerns about potential disruptions to global oil supplies. High-speed diesel reached a record Rs. 520.35 per litre on April 3 after climbing from Rs. 281 per litre in late February. During the same period, petrol rose from Rs. 266 per litre to a peak of Rs. 458.41 per litre. Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would now be reviewed daily instead of weekly in response to increased volatility in international energy markets. Under the new mechanism, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has been tasked with determining petroleum prices based on prevailing global market trends. The decision to introduce daily pricing has, however, faced criticism from the All Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, which has opposed the move and indicated that it may consider launching protests against the policy. Petrol remains the primary fuel used by private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws, and small transport, making its price particularly important for middle- and lower-income households. Meanwhile, high-speed diesel is widely consumed by the heavy transport sector, agriculture, industries, power plants, and commercial generators, meaning changes in diesel prices have a broader impact on transportation costs, supply chains, and inflation. The latest reduction is expected to provide modest financial relief to consumers and businesses. However, future fuel prices will largely depend on international crude oil trends, exchange rate movements, and developments in the Middle East, all of which continue to influence Pakistan’s petroleum pricing policy.
