Punjab CTD arrests 54 terror suspects

The Punjab Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested 54 suspected terrorists, including five individuals alleged to have links with India’s intelligence agency, RAW, during a series of intelligence-based operations (IBOs) conducted across the province over the past two months.

According to the CTD, a total of 419 intelligence-led operations were carried out in multiple districts to counter potential terrorist threats. During these operations, authorities questioned 422 individuals and detained 54 suspects believed to be associated with banned militant organisations.

Officials said the five suspects accused of having links with RAW were identified as Waris Khan, Danish Ali, Roz Ali Khan, Wilayat Shah and Muhammad Aziz. The arrests were made in Lahore and Okara, while investigations into their alleged activities are continuing.

The CTD stated that those taken into custody are suspected of having affiliations with several proscribed groups, including Fitna al-Khawarij, Daesh, Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Sipah-e-Sahaba and other outlawed organisations.

The operations were conducted in several districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Jhelum, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Pakpattan and Bahawalpur, as part of an ongoing campaign against terrorism.

Authorities said a significant cache of weapons, explosives and other materials was recovered during the raids. The seized items included 7.9 kilograms of explosive material, 12 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 50 detonators, safety fuse wire, pistols, rifles, ammunition, banned literature, pamphlets, flags, mobile phones and cash.

The CTD also highlighted its wider security efforts, saying that during the past eight weeks it carried out more than 13,500 combing operations in coordination with local police and other law enforcement agencies. Nearly 495,000 people were screened during these operations, resulting in more than 1,100 arrests and over 1,000 registered cases.

Pakistan’s FIA defends AI profiling and phone checks at airports despite constitutional privacy concerns

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has defended its use of artificial intelligence tools and mobile phone checks at airports to combat organised human smuggling, following public backlash over immigration checks. Additional Director-General for Immigration Nouman Siddiqui stated that AI-assisted profiling targets high-risk travel patterns, such as first-time visitors travelling to countries like Senegal, Malawi, or Cyprus with no clear family or employment ties, and that phone inspections occur only in select cases linked to smuggling networks. The FIA cited thousands of recent instances where citizens failed to return from visit visas, emphasizing that proactive measures are necessary to protect genuine travellers and prevent international reputational damage. However, legal experts warn that the agency is exceeding its authority. Immigration lawyer Umar Gilani noted that while officers can inspect travel documents, compelling passengers to unlock smartphones constitutes search and seizure, which legally requires a formal criminal investigation. Gilani argued that forcing access to personal devices violates the right to privacy under Article 14 of Pakistan’s constitution, calling for an independent immigration tribunal to oversee official decisions and safeguard fundamental rights.

John Stones joins Inter Milan after Manchester City exit

England international John Stones has completed a free transfer to Italian champions Inter Milan after leaving Manchester City at the end of his contract. The experienced centre-back signed a two-year deal with the Serie A giants, bringing an end to a successful decade-long spell at the Etihad Stadium, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders. Stones departed Manchester City after his contract expired at the end of June. His move to Inter Milan comes shortly after representing England at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the Three Lions secured a third-place finish. The defender featured in five matches during the tournament and earned his 94th international cap in England’s semi-final defeat. Following the announcement of his transfer, Stones shared his excitement about beginning a new chapter in Italy. “I’m excited to be here, thank you so much. I’ll see you soon, ciao,” he said in his first message to Inter supporters. The 32-year-old arrives in Milan with a wealth of experience at both club and international level. Since joining Manchester City in 2016, Stones played a crucial role in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence and ability to play out from the back made him a key figure in City’s defensive setup. During his time in Manchester, Stones helped the club win six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Champions League, adding several other domestic and international honours to his impressive collection. He was widely praised for his partnership with fellow defenders and his contribution to City’s possession-based style of football. Despite his success, the latter stages of his City career were disrupted by recurring injury problems. Fitness issues limited his appearances over the past few seasons, and he made only nine Premier League appearances during the previous campaign. As a result, his departure marked the end of an era for both the player and the club. Inter Milan will hope the experienced defender can strengthen their backline as they prepare to defend the Serie A title. The club sees Stones as an important addition, bringing leadership, experience and a winning mentality to the squad. Moving to Italy also presents a fresh challenge for the England international, who will experience Serie A for the first time in his career. The switch offers him the opportunity to revive his club career while continuing to compete at the highest level in European football. Stones is expected to integrate quickly into Inter’s squad ahead of the new season. If selected, he could make his competitive debut when Inter begin the defence of their Serie A crown against Monza at the San Siro on August 22. With a decorated career already behind him and plenty of experience on the international stage, Stones now begins a new journey in Italy, aiming to add further silverware to his impressive list of achievements while helping Inter remain among Europe’s elite clubs.

Fifty UK police chiefs urge prime minister to halt early release of PC Harper’s killers

Fifty police chiefs from across the United Kingdom have sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, urging the government to exhaust every legal avenue to prevent the early release of the teenagers convicted in the 2019 death of PC Andrew Harper. PC Harper, a 28-year-old Thames Valley Police officer, died after being dragged behind a getaway car following a quad bike theft in Berkshire. Two of the men convicted of his manslaughter, Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers, were sentenced to 13 years in 2020. Under recent legislative changes to manage severe prison overcrowding, both men are due to become eligible for release in January after serving half their sentences. The intervention by police chiefs across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland supports Burnham’s recent declaration that he is confident a legal resolution can be found to halt their discharge. In Downing Street, officials reiterated that the government intends to do everything within its power to block the early release. Beyond the specific case, the letter highlights broader concerns regarding public safety, victim impact, and officer morale. The police chiefs argued that reducing sentences for individuals involved in the deaths of emergency service personnel undermines the perceived sacrifice of officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public. The police leaders called on the government to mandate explicit public protection reviews before amending release terms for offenders convicted of serious violence or causing death, while also ensuring bereaved families are formally consulted whenever significant sentencing changes are implemented.
