Trinasolar eyes Pakistan’s battery storage boom

Pakistan has built one of the world’s fastest-growing distributed solar markets. According to recent research by Ember and Renewables First, it is estimated that Pakistan has approximately 38GW of distributed solar capacity across residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors. As this installed solar base grows, the next challenge is making that energy more flexible and available when businesses need it most.

Trina Storage, Trinasolar’s global battery energy storage business, says Pakistan’s expanding solar base is increasing interest in solar-plus-storage, particularly for utility-scale and microgrids for commercial & industrial (C&I). A Renewables First report estimates that Pakistan imported 4.6 GWh of BESS in 2025, representing 220% year-on-year growth.

Rather than replacing existing solar assets, well-designed solar-plus-storage systems can help businesses optimize renewable energy use, improve operational flexibility and support more resilient energy management strategies, depending on each site’s design and operating requirements.

However, adding BESS to an existing solar installation is not a simple plug-and-play exercise. Projects require careful assessment of the site’s electrical architecture, inverter configuration, demand profile, equipment compatibility, energy management system, safety requirements and commercial objectives.

For many retrofit projects, an AC-coupled approach provides a practical solution by allowing battery storage to operate alongside an existing PV system through its own Power Conversion System (PCS), helping retain much of the original solar infrastructure. Compatibility must still be assessed at system level, including electrical interfaces, communications, controls and compliance with the applicable IEC and UL standards.

Designed for utility-scale and C&I applications, Trina Storage’s Elementa Series is compatible and is designed for integration within solar-plus-storage systems using Trina or third-party equipment, with compatibility assessed according to the project architecture. Beyond supplying technology, Trinasolar can work with customers and EPC partners to assess system compatibility, determine the most suitable BESS configuration and develop an operating strategy aligned with each site’s technical and commercial requirements.

Trinasolar’s energy storage expertise builds on its long-established presence in Pakistan’s solar market, where the company has supplied more than 500MW of 700W+ modules across commercial, industrial and residential applications and recently introduced the Vertex N G3 760W series.

    Pension crisis hits Pak PWD workers as Committee orders urgent action

    Islamabad: Retired employees of the dissolved Pak PWD and families of workers who died during service are still waiting for pension benefits after being adjusted in the Capital Development Authority, the Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works was told. The committee expressed serious concern over the delay and ordered the Ministry of Interior to send the case to the Prime Minister within three days for a final decision. The committee said the matter should be settled on humanitarian grounds and without further delay. The meeting, chaired by Senator Nasir Mehmood, reviewed the implementation of earlier directions concerning the adjustment, salaries and pension matters of employees of the former Pakistan Public Works Department. The Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Works told the committee that all employees of the dissolved department had now been adjusted according to the committee’s directions. The committee learned that the employees were receiving their salaries and allowances. The chairman appreciated senior officials of the concerned ministries for completing the adjustment process. However, serious problems remain over pensions. The committee was told that former Pak PWD employees who were adjusted into the CDA and later retired had still not received their pension benefits. The same problem also affected employees who died during service, leaving their families waiting for benefits. Officials told the committee that the pension cases remained pending because government departments held differing views on the legal and administrative status of the adjusted employees. The Finance Division was providing budget for salaries and allowances but had not provided funds for pensions or medical reimbursement, the committee was informed. Members questioned how employees could be transferred to another organisation yet fail to receive all benefits normally connected with their service. The committee stressed that the adjustment of Pak PWD employees had been made under directions of the Federal Cabinet. It said the employees should therefore receive all related rights, benefits and privileges instead of receiving salaries alone. The committee was informed that the Ministry of Interior had prepared a summary for the Prime Minister. Officials explained that the Finance Division’s opinion binds ministries and divisions. Because of this, the dispute could only be finally resolved through a decision by the Prime Minister or the Federal Cabinet. After a detailed discussion, the committee unanimously decided that the issue should not remain pending. Chairman Senator Nasir Mehmood directed the Ministry of Interior to submit the summary to the Prime Minister within three days. The committee said retired employees and families of deceased workers should not continue suffering because of differences between government departments over rules and interpretation. Senator Nasir Mehmood said the committee supported the affected employees and would continue to pursue their cases until their legitimate issues were resolved. The final decision now depends on the Prime Minister or the Federal Cabinet after the Interior Ministry submits the summary.

    AJK polling extended amid disruptions and security…

    Polling in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections was extended by one hour on Monday. Voting in Bhimber, Mirpur and Kotli continued until 6pm. The extension was announced as several polling stations faced disruptions and complaints. Political parties also raised concerns about alleged interference and security issues during the voting process. The first phase of the AJK elections covers all 13 constituencies of Mirpur Division. The division includes four seats in Mirpur, three in Bhimber and six in Kotli. More than 1.4 million registered voters are eligible to cast their votes in the first phase. Election authorities established 2,454 polling stations and 3,701 polling booths across the division. Around 22,000 election officials were assigned duties to manage the polling process. Security was also increased at polling stations across the region. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) raised several complaints during the day. PPP AJK Election Cell in-charge Sardar Abdul Shakoor called on the Election Commission to take immediate notice of disruptions at polling stations. Polling at Station 108 in LA-13 Kotli-VI was reportedly suspended for around two hours. Shakoor said the interruption was affecting voters and preventing them from exercising their right to vote. He demanded that polling be restored immediately. He also called for an investigation into the reasons behind the suspension. The PPP also alleged interference at several polling stations in LA-8 Raj Mahal and LA-12 Charhoi. The party claimed that some PML-N supporters were attempting to influence the polling process. The allegations included the presence of armed individuals near some polling stations. The PPP demanded stronger security arrangements to protect voters, polling staff and election material. Another serious incident was reported in LA-9 Nikyal. A PPP worker was killed during an incident that the party linked to alleged intimidation and the display of weapons. PPP officials identified the deceased as 35-year-old Mukhtar Younus. The party demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the incident. Shakoor alleged that weapons had been displayed in the area before polling day. He claimed that timely action by the authorities could have prevented the situation from worsening. The PPP also accused the federal government of interfering in the AJK elections. PPP Secretary General Nadeem Afzal Chan demanded that federal officials and government machinery remain neutral during the electoral process. He said political parties should be allowed to compete without outside interference. Chan also raised concerns over alleged use of state resources during the election campaign. He called for development announcements and other government activities that could influence voters to be stopped during the election period. The PPP has established an election monitoring cell in Islamabad. Senior party leaders are monitoring polling-related complaints through the cell. The monitoring team is also maintaining contact with election officials, district administrations, candidates and party representatives. The PPP said the purpose of the cell was to monitor the election process and report any violations. Meanwhile, the Election Commission took action against two presiding officers in Kotli. The officials were accused of failing to report to their assigned polling stations. They allegedly went to a private residence instead. An FIR was registered against both officials. They were arrested and later suspended from service. Election authorities said strict action would be taken against officials who violate election rules. They also warned that negligence and irregularities in the polling process would not be tolerated. Security remained a major focus during polling. Authorities declared 1,965 polling stations sensitive or highly sensitive. More than 19,000 security personnel were deployed across Mirpur Division. The force included around 17,000 police personnel. Around 2,100 Army personnel were also kept on standby. They could be deployed as a backup force if the security situation deteriorated. Despite the complaints and isolated incidents, polling continued at most stations. In LA-1 Dadyal, voting began in a peaceful atmosphere. Security arrangements were strengthened around all polling stations in the constituency. More than 105,000 voters are registered in Dadyal. The constituency has 139 polling stations and 234 polling booths. The first phase of the elections is being held under a revised schedule. Polling in Muzaffarabad Division and the 12 refugee constituencies is scheduled for August 2. The final phase will be held in Poonch Division on August 10. A total of 288 candidates are contesting the 13 seats in Mirpur Division. Election authorities have urged candidates, workers and voters to maintain peace and follow the electoral code of conduct.

    Zidane takes charge as France head coach

    US Embassy unveils Liberty Bell in Islamabad

    The United States Embassy in Islamabad has launched a unique cultural exhibition in the Pakistani capital, bringing together art, history and the shared values of two nations as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The “Let Freedom Ring” Liberty Bell display was inaugurated on Thursday, July 23, at Lok Virsa Museum in a ceremony attended by US Chargé d’Affaires Andy Halus and Pakistan’s Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi. The display will run until July 27 at two of Islamabad’s most prominent cultural institutions, Lok Virsa Museum and the Pakistan Monument Museum, with members of the public invited to visit both venues throughout the five-day exhibition period. At the heart of the exhibition are 16 uniquely designed bells, each created by a Pakistani artist from across the country and each representing a distinct perspective on the concept of freedom. The artists were invited to respond to a single central question: what does freedom mean to me? The resulting collection is as diverse as the country it comes from, with each bell offering a visual and cultural interpretation of a value that sits at the core of both American history and human aspiration. The initiative was organised by the US Mission to Pakistan’s Public Diplomacy Section through its Lincoln Corners network, in collaboration with the 16 Pakistani artists whose work forms the exhibition. The collaborative nature of the project is itself a reflection of the diplomatic spirit behind it, one country celebrating its founding ideals by inviting another to contribute its own creative voice to the conversation. Speaking at the inauguration, Halus drew a direct line between the values the exhibition represents and the relationship between the two countries. “Looking at this bell, I am reminded of something that Pakistan and the US share deeply, a belief in the power of expression, of art, and of the freedom to imagine a better world,” he said. “Lok Virsa has spent decades preserving that spirit in Pakistan. Today, we are proud to add America’s own story of freedom to this special place.” Pakistan’s cultural minister welcomed the exhibition as a reflection of the longstanding ties between the two nations, highlighting the role that cultural exchange plays in strengthening bilateral relations beyond the formal channels of diplomacy. The “Let Freedom Ring” campaign forms part of the US Mission Pakistan’s year-long “Freedom 250” programme, a global initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence through events centred on the themes of freedom, innovation and excellence. The Islamabad exhibition is one of many such events being held around the world as part of this broader commemorative effort.

    Spider-Man tops Endgame box office record
