Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb met US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker on Monday to discuss ways to strengthen Pakistan-US economic relations, trade and investment cooperation.

According to the Finance Ministry, Aurangzeb briefed the US diplomat on his recent visit to Washington and meetings with senior American officials, including the US Treasury secretary. He also shared details of discussions with officials from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and US Export-Import Bank.

The meeting focused on increasing US investment and financing for commercially viable projects in Pakistan. Both sides also discussed improving Pakistan’s access to US markets and expanding Pakistani exports.

The two sides agreed to advance a framework aimed at increasing bilateral trade and investment. They also discussed Pakistan’s participation in international capital markets and efforts to diversify the country’s sources of financing.

According to the ministry, discussions also covered measures to strengthen foreign exchange reserves and improve Pakistan’s credit profile. Opportunities for greater investment by US financial institutions in Pakistan were reviewed.

Cooperation in key sectors, including ports, logistics, energy and telecommunications, also came under discussion. The two sides explored potential collaboration in digital technology and artificial intelligence.

Aurangzeb said significant progress had been made in negotiations on a bilateral trade framework between Pakistan and the United States. He said the government was working to create a more favourable environment for private-sector investment.

The finance minister welcomed the interest of US companies and investors in Pakistan. He said the government was continuing reforms aimed at improving the business and investment climate.

Aurangzeb also briefed the US chargé d’affaires on Pakistan’s new system for daily adjustments in petroleum product prices. He explained that the mechanism was designed to align domestic prices more closely with developments in the international market.

He said the government’s priorities included maintaining fiscal discipline, strengthening foreign exchange reserves and increasing exports. He added that reforms were underway to improve economic stability and attract investment.

Natalie Baker appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to manage its economic situation during a period of regional tensions. She also praised the country for maintaining economic and financial stability despite rising energy prices.

    KARACHI: Fresh forensic findings in the death of businessman Mir Raza Ali have raised further questions over the circumstances surrounding his death, with sources saying acid traces were detected in his stomach, lungs and on parts of his body. According to sources familiar with the investigation, severe acid-related damage was found in Ali’s lungs, while traces were also detected on his hands and feet. His clothing reportedly contained acid traces as well as sweat believed to belong to another person. The investigation took another turn after police sealed a guesthouse near the location where Ali’s body was discovered. Six people working at the guesthouse were taken into custody for questioning, bringing the total number of detained individuals in the case to 21. Their statements have also been recorded as investigators attempt to establish what happened before Ali’s death. The latest developments came a day after Ali’s body was exhumed and examined by a medical board before being reburied. The second post-mortem reportedly found a gunshot wound entering from the back, along with multiple signs of physical violence. The medical examination also revealed fractured ribs and several injuries to Ali’s head and face, adding to concerns surrounding the circumstances of his death. Ali, an IBA graduate and businessman, was found dead in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area last month after he went missing on July 28. His father rejected suggestions that his son had died by suicide and maintained that he had been murdered. Meanwhile, Ali’s parents have opposed the proposed formation of a judicial commission, saying the police should be allowed to continue their investigation. Family lawyer Jibran Nasir said the parents had conveyed their decision in writing to the Karachi mayor, Sindh interior minister and additional inspector general. Nasir said the family currently saw no need for a judicial commission and wanted the police investigation to proceed according to law. The Sindh government had earlier announced plans to establish a judicial commission headed by high court judges. Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar said the decision was taken following consultations with Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, describing the commission as necessary to investigate the case. Separately, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has approached the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency over social media allegations linking him and his son, Rawal Memon, to Ali’s death. Through his lawyer, Memon submitted a complaint to the NCCIA Karachi Zone, accusing certain social media accounts of spreading what he termed false, fabricated and malicious claims. The complaint alleges that social media posts linked a guesthouse near the crime scene to Memon and claimed that his son travelled to London shortly after the incident. Rawal Memon, who is currently in London, rejected the allegations and described them as an organised smear campaign. The complaint further alleged that online posts questioned the medical investigation and accused Memon and his political party of shielding individuals allegedly connected to Ali’s death. With forensic findings, multiple detentions and competing calls for a judicial inquiry now surrounding the case, investigators face mounting pressure to determine how Mir Raza Ali died and identify those responsible.

Hina was found dead on Thursday morning inside the bathroom of a second-floor apartment at Askari Apartments in Rawalpindi’s Lalkurti area. According to her family, Hina’s brother, Fahad Javed Malik, was alerted after receiving a call from her father-in-law about an emergency at the residence. Malik and other relatives reached the apartment and found Hina dead. The family told police that Hina’s hands were tied behind her back, her mouth was covered with cloth and a wire had been placed around her neck and connected to the bathroom shower. Her body was later shifted to Benazir Bhutto Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police have registered a murder case under Sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The provisions deal with murder and acts allegedly committed by multiple people with a common intention. Hina’s relatives have accused her husband, Faisal Asghar Imam, his father Asghar Ali Fayyaz and domestic worker Zeeshan Arshad of involvement in her death. The allegations have not been proven, and the suspects have not been convicted. Her family has also alleged that Hina faced repeated physical and psychological abuse during her marriage. Her brother claimed that she had previously complained about mistreatment. He further alleged that her husband had also been abusive toward a previous wife, who later obtained a divorce. Police are investigating the allegations and examining evidence recovered from the apartment. Civil Lines police have said that the investigation remains underway, while no arrests had been reported at the time of the latest statement. Mahira Khan’s public support has brought additional attention to the campaign. The actress previously expressed grief over the incident and questioned how society raises men in the wake of violence against women. Her remarks were widely shared across social media. Other showbiz personalities and social media users have also joined the calls for justice, turning the case into a wider public discussion about domestic violence, accountability and the protection of women. For Hina’s family, the campaign represents a demand for answers about the circumstances that led to her death.     16 militants killed in Balochistan operation

    Security forces have killed 16 militants during intelligence-based operations in several areas of Balochistan, according to security sources. The operations are being carried out under Operation Al-Azm following a series of terrorist attacks in the province. Authorities said several militant hideouts and ambush positions were destroyed during the ongoing action. Security personnel also recovered weapons, ammunition and explosive material from the targeted locations. Operations are continuing in areas including Killi Kundi Umrani, Khad Kocha and Mastung, where security forces are targeting militant networks blamed for recent attacks. The latest operations followed an attack on the Mangi Dam Police Station, after which security forces launched a separate campaign named Operation Shaban. The security situation in Mastung also came under renewed focus after unidentified armed men attacked a vehicle on a national highway. A district and sessions judge and his security guard were killed in the attack, while an additional sessions judge and another person were seriously injured. Security sources said counterterrorism operations would continue across Balochistan until militant infrastructure is dismantled and law and order is restored. The state refers to militants linked to the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and other groups operating in the province as Fitna al-Hindustan. Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir recently reiterated the military’s determination to eliminate militant networks in Balochistan. He said targeted operations against Fitna al-Khawarij and Fitna al-Hindustan would continue until terrorism and those supporting it were eliminated. The latest operation comes amid a broader rise in militant violence in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. A United Nations Security Council assessment has also highlighted continuing threats from militant groups in the region. The report pointed to attacks claimed by the BLA against Pakistani security forces and infrastructure linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The UN assessment also raised concerns about militant groups obtaining modern weapons and equipment through cross-border smuggling and illegal markets. It noted the reported use of advanced rifles, night-vision equipment, thermal imaging systems, sniper weapons and drones by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The report further cited assessments that the BLA and TTP have maintained coordination in some areas, including through shared resources and training networks.
