Pakistan’s major dams reach 72% storage capa…

Pakistan’s water reserves have improved significantly, with the country’s major reservoirs now filled to 72% of their total storage capacity, according to official data released on Sunday.

The latest figures show that the combined water storage in the country’s key reservoirs has reached 9.466 million acre-feet (MAF), compared with a total storage capacity of 13.149 million acre-feet.

Officials said the improvement follows a substantial increase in water inflows across the Indus River system, with inflows significantly exceeding outflows. The higher inflow has helped replenish major dams and strengthen the country’s water reserves.

The increase in reservoir levels is expected to support irrigation needs, improve water availability for agriculture and enhance overall water management during the current season.

Authorities continue to monitor inflows and reservoir levels as the monsoon season contributes to rising water storage across the country’s major dams.

    Pakistan’s IT exports hit record $4.6 billio…

KARACHI: Pakistan’s information technology (IT) sector achieved a historic milestone in the fiscal year 2025-26, with IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) exports reaching a record $4.6 billion, marking an impressive 21 percent increase from the previous year’s $3.81 billion. Although the sector narrowly missed the government’s $5 billion export target, the achievement reinforces Pakistan’s position as one of the country’s fastest-growing export industries and strengthens its long-term goal of reaching $10 billion in IT exports by FY2028-29. Industry experts believe the strong performance reflects the steady expansion of Pakistan’s digital economy, driven by a growing pool of skilled professionals, rising demand for remote services, improved internet infrastructure and favourable tax incentives. However, they also caution that the sector must overcome structural challenges and shift towards innovation-led growth to sustain momentum. Pakistan is home to more than 600,000 IT professionals and freelancers, alongside tens of thousands of registered software and IT-enabled services companies operating from major technology hubs in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Secondary cities such as Faisalabad, Sialkot and Sukkur are also emerging as important contributors to the country’s digital workforce. Software development, business process outsourcing (BPO), enterprise technology services, call centres and freelancing remain the backbone of Pakistan’s IT exports. Meanwhile, demand for advanced services including artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud computing, automation and digital consulting is expanding rapidly as global businesses seek specialised technology solutions. The United States continues to be Pakistan’s largest export destination for IT services, followed by the United Kingdom, the Gulf region, Europe, Canada and several Asian markets. Experts say significant opportunities remain untapped in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Africa and Central Asia, particularly in high-value technology sectors. Industry leaders stress that Pakistan must diversify both its export markets and service offerings. They argue that relying mainly on traditional software development and low-cost outsourcing will limit future growth, while greater investment in AI-powered solutions, enterprise software, cybersecurity and digital transformation services can significantly increase export earnings. Freelancers have also emerged as a major force in Pakistan’s digital economy, contributing an estimated $1.1 billion, or roughly a quarter of total IT exports, during FY2025-26. Online platforms have enabled thousands of professionals to access global clients, creating new employment opportunities and boosting foreign exchange inflows. Beyond export revenues, the sector continues to generate employment, with thousands of technical positions available across the country. The expansion of remote work has also increased opportunities for women and professionals living outside major urban centres. Experts believe the next phase of growth depends on moving beyond providing outsourced services to creating globally competitive technology products and intellectual property. They argue that Pakistan must position itself as a producer of innovation rather than simply a destination for low-cost software development. The country’s AI ambitions are also gaining momentum. Under the National AI Policy 2025, Pakistan plans to establish AI centres of excellence, launch dedicated funding programmes, expand public-sector AI adoption and train around one million people in AI-related skills by 2030. New AI hubs are also being developed to support startups and accelerate innovation. International partnerships are expected to play a key role in this transformation. Pakistan has strengthened technology cooperation with China through joint AI and IT initiatives and recently became a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO). At the same time, interest from the United States has grown, with American investors pledging more than $20 million for Pakistan’s technology sector during a recent investment conference. Connectivity has also improved through expanded submarine cable capacity, cross-border fibre links and stronger cloud infrastructure, making it easier for local companies to deliver digital services worldwide. Despite the progress, industry stakeholders warn that policy uncertainty, foreign exchange restrictions, internet disruptions, energy costs, weak intellectual property protection and limited access to global payment systems continue to hinder faster growth. They believe addressing these challenges while promoting innovation and AI-driven technologies will be essential if Pakistan hopes to transform its record-breaking IT industry into a global technology powerhouse.

Gracie Abrams credits Taylor Swift for a precious …

Gracie Abrams has never hidden her admiration for Taylor Swift, but the singer-songwriter is now revealing that Swift’s influence goes far beyond music. In a recent cover story interview with Rolling Stone, Abrams shared how watching the global pop icon navigate fame and success taught her one of the most valuable lessons of her career: learning to let go of her ego and focus on the work that truly matters. (Rolling Stone) Abrams, who has become one of pop music’s fastest-rising stars, said observing Swift’s professionalism changed the way she approaches her own career. Rather than chasing validation or allowing success to shape her identity, Abrams explained that Swift inspired her to stay grounded, remain curious, and always prioritize creativity over personal pride. According to Abrams, one of the biggest takeaways from spending time around Swift was seeing how someone with extraordinary global success continues to work with humility. She admitted that the experience helped her rethink how ego can sometimes interfere with artistic growth. Instead of trying to prove herself, Abrams now focuses on making honest music that reflects her experiences and emotions. The two artists have developed a close professional relationship over the past few years. Abrams previously joined Swift as an opening act on select dates of The Eras Tour, giving her the opportunity to perform in front of massive stadium crowds around the world. The experience introduced Abrams to millions of new listeners while allowing her to witness firsthand the dedication and discipline that have defined Swift’s career. (Rolling Stone) Abrams also praised Swift for creating an environment where artists feel supported rather than intimidated. She described the Grammy-winning superstar as generous with her advice and encouragement, adding that Swift’s confidence comes from preparation and hard work instead of ego. That mindset, Abrams said, motivated her to approach challenges with greater patience and self-belief. Since releasing her breakthrough projects, Abrams has earned widespread praise for her emotional songwriting and intimate storytelling. Her honest lyrics and understated style have helped her build a loyal fan base, while collaborations with respected artists have further established her place in contemporary pop music. Even as her popularity continues to grow, Abrams says she wants to remain authentic and committed to personal growth. Taylor Swift’s influence, she believes, extends beyond chart-topping songs and sold-out tours. For Abrams, the biggest lesson has been understanding that long-term success is built on consistency, kindness, and a willingness to keep learning. As Abrams continues to evolve as both an artist and songwriter, she credits Swift for helping her develop a healthier perspective on fame. By letting go of ego and embracing humility, the young singer says she has found greater confidence in her own voice. It is a lesson she hopes to carry with her throughout every stage of her career.

Asian markets rise after Wall Street rally as oil prices edge higher

Asian stock markets opened higher on Monday, taking cues from Wall Street’s latest gains after weaker-than-expected US employment data reduced expectations of an immediate increase in borrowing costs. However, rising oil prices and uncertainty surrounding developments in the Gulf limited the overall optimism in financial markets. Investors were also closely monitoring the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies, after Iran said discussions over the reopening of the strategic waterway were nearing an agreement. Iran announced on Sunday that negotiations with Oman on establishing new shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz had reached their final stages. Tehran, however, maintained that normal traffic through the waterway would resume only after the United States fulfilled additional conditions. The uncertainty surrounding the route kept pressure on crude markets. Brent crude futures increased 0.9% to $84.32 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained 0.7% to $78.74 per barrel. The latest increase in energy prices has added another layer of uncertainty for investors ahead of the release of US inflation figures. US Inflation Data in Focus Market participants are now turning their attention to the US consumer price index report scheduled for Wednesday. Economists are expecting headline consumer inflation to rise by 0.1%, while core inflation, which excludes food and energy costs, is projected to increase by 0.2%. A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could revive concerns that the Federal Reserve may be forced to keep interest rates higher for longer and potentially consider another rate increase at its September meeting. Michael Feroli, chief US economist at JPMorgan, said his forecast for core inflation at 0.22% would probably not be sufficient on its own to trigger a rate increase in September. However, he cautioned that repeated monthly increases close to 0.3% could change the outlook. Feroli also highlighted the possibility of a rebound in prices of core goods after they declined for two consecutive months, saying this would be an important factor for markets to monitor. Expectations for a September rate increase have weakened significantly in recent days. Futures markets now indicate roughly a 44% probability of a rate move in September, compared with about 67% a week earlier. Asian Equities Follow Wall Street Higher The decline in expectations for an immediate increase in US interest rates helped US Treasury bonds rally on Friday and supported a strong performance by Wall Street equities. The positive momentum carried into Asian trading on Monday. Japan’s Nikkei index climbed 0.6%, while South Korea’s benchmark market gained 0.5%. MSCI’s broad index of Asia-Pacific shares excluding Japan also advanced 0.3%, reflecting improved investor sentiment across regional markets. The gains came as traders continued to assess the impact of softer US employment data on the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook. Lower expectations for interest-rate increases generally support equities because cheaper financing conditions can encourage investment and improve corporate earnings prospects. European Markets Show Caution European markets were less enthusiastic, with futures pointing to modest declines at the start of trading. EUROSTOXX 50 futures and Germany’s DAX futures each slipped 0.1%, while FTSE futures were down 0.4%. In the United States, S&P 500 futures declined 0.1%, while Nasdaq futures remained largely unchanged. The subdued futures performance followed a particularly strong week for US technology stocks, with the Nasdaq gaining around 5% amid a series of encouraging corporate earnings reports. Strong Corporate Earnings Support US Stocks Corporate earnings have remained a major source of support for US equities. According to analysts at Bank of America, nearly 90% of companies in the S&P 500 had reported their results, with earnings per share rising approximately 30% year-on-year after excluding investment gains recorded by Alphabet and Amazon. The proportion of companies exceeding earnings expectations also remained unusually strong. Around 76% of reporting companies beat analysts’ earnings-per-share estimates, matching the highest level recorded since 2021. Artificial intelligence-related businesses continued to stand out among the strongest performers. Bank of America analysts said companies linked to AI had recorded median earnings-per-share growth of around 28%, compared with approximately 12% for businesses without a direct AI connection. However, analysts expect the pace of AI-related earnings growth to moderate in the coming quarter, with consensus forecasts pointing to growth of around 16%. Investors will have fewer major earnings releases to digest this week, although several important technology companies are scheduled to report results. These include semiconductor manufacturer Applied Materials, networking equipment company Cisco and cloud infrastructure provider CoreWeave. Bond Yields and Dollar Remain in Focus In the bond market, the yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note edged slightly higher to 4.673%. Investors are also preparing for approximately $125 billion in new US government debt issuance during the week, which could influence Treasury yields and broader financial-market conditions. The recent decline in bond yields, combined with improving appetite for riskier assets, has placed pressure on the US dollar. The euro remained close to a seven-week high at around $1.1557. Meanwhile, the dollar was little changed against the Japanese yen at approximately 157.85. Currency traders remain cautious about the possibility of intervention by Japanese authorities if the yen weakens further. Japan has previously expressed concern over sharp and rapid movements in its currency, particularly when excessive weakness threatens to increase import costs. Gold Holds Near Record Levels Gold also remained firmly supported as lower bond yields improved the appeal of the non-interest-bearing precious metal. Spot gold was trading around $4,342 an ounce after recording a gain of more than 7% during the previous week. The metal continues to benefit from a combination of factors, including expectations surrounding US monetary policy, movements in Treasury yields, currency fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainty. With investors awaiting US inflation data and closely watching developments around the Strait of Hormuz, markets are likely to remain sensitive to changes in energy prices and interest-rate expectations in the days ahead.
