BANGKOK — The government is encouraging the use of B20 biodiesel as a more cost-effective alternative to conventional diesel, citing a price advantage of five baht per litre and potential cost savings for public transport operators, a government spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Ratchada Dhnadirek, vice minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, said B20 biodiesel — a blend of 20 percent palm oil and 80 percent conventional diesel — offers significant savings compared to standard B7 diesel, which contains a lower proportion of palm oil.

Economic and Strategic Benefits

Ms Ratchada said the promotion of B20 would also help boost demand for palm oil, improving revenues for oil palm farmers while reducing Thailand’s dependence on imported oil. She added that the fuel has the capacity to enhance Thailand’s energy security in the long term by utilizing domestically produced resources.

Limited Adoption Despite Lower Price

Despite its lower price, B20 biodiesel is currently available only at select service stations, as it has failed to gain widespread popularity among motorists and transport operators. Many remain concerned that the higher concentration of palm oil may not be suitable for their engines, with potential implications for performance and maintenance.

The Road Haulage Association recently stated that most truckers will not use B20, citing concerns that the fuel could lead to higher maintenance costs over time. Such concerns have limited uptake, even as the government seeks to promote the fuel as a cost-saving measure.

Balancing Promotion and Practicality

The government’s push for B20 reflects broader efforts to reduce fuel import reliance and support domestic agricultural sectors, particularly oil palm growers. However, convincing transport operators to adopt the fuel will likely require addressing concerns about engine compatibility and long-term vehicle maintenance costs.

Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan wanted to benefit from Malaysia’s experience in the coast guard sector. Speaking during the meeting, the Pakistani interior minister said Pakistan was committed to playing its role in the global fight against terrorism. He also described Malaysia as one of the rapidly developing countries in the Muslim world. The two ministers also discussed ways to promote tourism between Pakistan and Malaysia and improve visa facilities for travellers. Naqvi said Malaysia was an attractive tourism destination for Pakistani citizens and stressed the importance of making travel easier between the two countries. He also said an increase in Malaysia’s work quota for Pakistanis would allow more Pakistani workers to travel to the country through legal channels. According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior, a high-level Pakistani delegation will visit Malaysia soon to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

His lawyer, Menya Arab Tigrine, stressed that Siad had faced several complaints in France, including allegations of rape, but had never been prosecuted. She said in a statement that he had died and that he was innocent. A woman identified only as Anya, an Epstein victim who spoke previously to reporters, said Siad had introduced her to Epstein and described the arrangement as a complete set up, calling Siad essentially a professional trafficker. In one email to Epstein released among the files, Siad wrote in broken English that in this business he sometimes catches fish quickly and other times catches none, a comment referencing his work finding models. Ahead of a recent investigative report examining the allegations, Arab Tigrine had said her client was unavailable for comment. However, in an earlier television interview, Siad said he had not known that women were being abused by Epstein, adding that he trusted Epstein and believed he was a professional person. The first complaints against Siad in France were filed in February. He denied any wrongdoing in multiple recent media appearances, telling one French broadcaster in May that he had never raped anyone in his life. Lawyers representing the former model who filed the first complaint against Siad said they were stunned by news of his death, saying they struggled to find words for the anger and sadness they felt, with alleged victims now denied the chance for a criminal trial. The lawyers expressed strong frustration toward the Paris prosecutor’s office, which had announced in February that it was opening an investigation into Epstein’s French associates. Anne Claire Le Jeune, a lawyer representing six women who filed complaints against Siad, said her clients had been denied justice. She said her clients found the strength to break a heavy silence surrounding Siad’s ties to Epstein and faced every stage of the legal process with remarkable courage. She called it deeply regrettable that the slow pace of the investigation allowed Siad to die before he could be questioned or detained, depriving the victims of a crucial step in their pursuit of truth and accountability. Another Epstein associate, French modelling agent Jean Luc Brunel, was found hanged in his Paris prison cell in 2022. Brunel, 76 at the time, had spent more than a year in custody while under investigation on suspicion of raping minors and trafficking minors for sexual exploitation, allegations he denied. Brunel founded the modelling agency MC2 Model Management with funding from Epstein and was suspected of helping transport and house young women and girls on Epstein’s behalf. Epstein, who was 66, died by suicide in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting federal trial on sex trafficking charges.     Supreme Court reserves verdict on diyat amount

He informed the court that the current diyat amount stands at around Rs197 million (Rs19.7 million). Justice Hashim Kakar asked whether the diyat should be calculated according to its value at the time of the offence, the accused’s arrest, or the time of conviction and sentencing. Justice Salahuddin remarked that making the financial consequences of murder more serious might discourage people from committing such offences. He also noted that Saudi Arabia continues to use 100 camels as the traditional basis for diyat. Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim observed that delays in deciding cases reflect shortcomings in the justice system and said an accused should not suffer because of institutional delays. In response, Prosecutor Arshad Hussain argued that certain legal matters, such as determining a person’s age, are assessed from the time of arrest, suggesting that a similar principle could apply in determining the relevant period for diyat. The Supreme Court directed all prosecutors concerned to submit their written arguments on the matter. After receiving the submissions, the court will issue its decision on how and when the amount of diyat should be determined.
