Pakistan, Malaysia agree to boost cooperation agai…

Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen joint efforts against terrorism, drug trafficking and human trafficking while enhancing intelligence sharing between the two countries.

Malaysian Interior Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail met his Pakistani counterpart, Mohsin Naqvi, in Islamabad. The two ministers also held delegation-level talks during which they discussed a range of security and law-enforcement issues.

The two sides agreed to increase cooperation to prevent drug trafficking, illegal immigration and cybercrime. They also discussed greater intelligence sharing to support action against terrorists and drug traffickers.

Both countries agreed to develop a more effective joint strategy to counter terrorism, narcotics and human trafficking. They also expressed their commitment to improving coordination to prevent illegal immigration and cyber-related crimes.

During the meeting, Pakistan and Malaysia decided to establish a joint working group to strengthen institutional ties between their interior ministries.

The two sides also agreed to expand cooperation between Pakistan’s National Police Academy and the Royal Malaysia Police College. Training programmes and the exchange of expertise in law enforcement were also discussed.

Cooperation between the two countries’ coast guard authorities was another key area discussed during the meeting. Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan wanted to benefit from Malaysia’s experience in the coast guard sector.

Speaking during the meeting, the Pakistani interior minister said Pakistan was committed to playing its role in the global fight against terrorism. He also described Malaysia as one of the rapidly developing countries in the Muslim world.

The two ministers also discussed ways to promote tourism between Pakistan and Malaysia and improve visa facilities for travellers.

Naqvi said Malaysia was an attractive tourism destination for Pakistani citizens and stressed the importance of making travel easier between the two countries.

He also said an increase in Malaysia’s work quota for Pakistanis would allow more Pakistani workers to travel to the country through legal channels.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior, a high-level Pakistani delegation will visit Malaysia soon to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

They said the day marked the abandonment of even the pretence that Article 16 of the Constitution still stands in Punjab. Thousands of citizens, workers, lawyers and civil society members had assembled outside the courts when police baton-charged the gathering without provocation, striking women and children present at the site. PTI Lahore President Mian Akram Usman and MPA Sheikh Imtiaz were manhandled, their clothing torn in public view. More than fifty workers, along with sitting members of the Punjab Assembly, were taken into custody. “A government that will not answer an application on paper has chosen to answer it with lathis in the street,” Bashir said. “PTI Lahore applied in writing to the Lahore Deputy Commissioner for permission to assemble peacefully. The administration returned silence. Today it returned batons.” The protests were not confined to Lahore. Demonstrations were held in Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, Kasur, Jhang, Kamalia in Toba Tek Singh and other districts across Punjab. The state’s own conduct is the measure of what it fears. Permission was refused across three provinces, a courthouse precinct was baton-charged and elected legislators were dragged into custody, all on account of a man who has been in a cell since 2023. Nobody deploys that against a spent force. Ammar Ali Jan said the beating was not aimed at one party alone. “When the state clubs women, children and elected representatives outside a courthouse, it is not policing a crowd, it is informing ordinary people that the Constitution was written for somebody else,” he said. “A right that survives only until the administration is irritated by it is not a right at all.” The warning had already been given. Amnesty International said on Tuesday that ahead of the anniversary gatherings the authorities must facilitate the right to peaceful protest and ensure there was no repeat of unlawful and arbitrary arrests. Punjab read that warning and did the opposite within twenty four hours. The violence reached beyond political workers. Aaj TV court reporter Natiq Rehan was assaulted by police while covering the rally and placed in a prisoners van, filmed and reported in the press. When the state beats the witness alongside the demonstrator, it has said plainly what it wants kept off the record. The leaders demanded the immediate release of every detained worker and legislator, registration of cases against the officers who ordered and carried out the operation, and a judicial inquiry into the conduct of the Lahore administration.

However, their effort to bring the dispute before a public trial has now been rejected. On Wednesday, August 12, Judge Hernán D. Vera ruled that the legal dispute must be resolved through confidential arbitration instead of proceeding as a public court case. The decision represents a major victory for Jackson’s estate, as arbitration generally keeps legal proceedings private and limits the matter from moving forward through a public trial. According to court papers obtained by Billboard, Judge Vera acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but concluded that the existing agreement required the dispute to be handled through arbitration. “Although the allegations are horrific, the court is without discretion to do aught but enforce the language of the arbitration clause,” the court stated. The ruling does not determine whether the allegations made by the Cascio siblings are true or false. Instead, it focuses on the legal terms of the 2019 settlement and whether the dispute must follow the arbitration provision contained in that agreement. The siblings’ allegations have nevertheless brought renewed attention to Jackson’s relationships with children and families who were close to him during his lifetime. Jackson, one of the most influential entertainers in music history, faced allegations of sexual misconduct during his career, though he consistently denied wrongdoing. The latest ruling means that the Cascio siblings’ dispute with Jackson’s estate will now continue, if at all, through a private arbitration process rather than a public courtroom trial.
