Acting President of Azad Kashmir urges election co…

Acting President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Chaudhry Latif Akbar has sent two letters to the Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, demanding action over alleged security failures and irregularities reported during the polling process.

In his letters, Chaudhry Latif Akbar raised serious concerns regarding the arrangements made for election security and claimed that effective security measures were not provided at several polling stations. He called for a thorough investigation into the incidents reported during the voting process and urged the Election Commission to take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.

The Acting President stated that polling agents at various locations were allegedly prevented from entering polling stations, which he described as a serious violation of the electoral process. According to him, the presence of polling agents is essential to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence in elections.

Chaudhry Latif Akbar further requested an inquiry into reports of firing incidents, alleged interference in the polling process, and claims that some voters were deprived of their right to cast their votes. He emphasized that all such allegations should be investigated impartially to determine the facts and ensure accountability.

In one of his letters, the Acting President highlighted delays in the start of polling at Koomi Kot and Jhandgran areas. He stated that voting began late in these locations and requested that polling time be extended in the affected areas to compensate for the lost time and allow voters a fair opportunity to exercise their democratic right.

He also referred to an alleged armed attack on Mumtaz Hussain Naqvi, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident. Chaudhry Latif Akbar demanded that those responsible for the attack be identified and legal proceedings be initiated against them.

The Acting President stressed that all incidents reported during the election process must be examined through transparent investigations. He called upon the Election Commission to ensure that no individual or group involved in electoral violations escapes accountability.

In his communication with the Election Commission, Chaudhry Latif Akbar reiterated the importance of maintaining a free, fair, and peaceful electoral environment. He stated that public trust in democratic institutions depends on ensuring that elections are conducted without intimidation, interference, or unlawful practices.

The letters come amid political tensions surrounding the election process in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where various political parties have raised concerns over alleged irregularities and security issues. Opposition parties have also questioned aspects of the polling arrangements, while authorities have maintained that necessary measures were taken to conduct peaceful elections.

Chaudhry Latif Akbar’s demands reflect concerns about transparency and fairness in the electoral process. He emphasized that protecting voters’ rights and ensuring equal participation should remain the top priority of election authorities.

He concluded by urging the Election Commission to conduct a comprehensive review of all reported incidents, publish the findings transparently, and take strict action against anyone found involved in misconduct. According to him, only a credible and impartial investigation can strengthen public confidence and ensure that the democratic process reflects the genuine will of the people.

Whoopi Goldberg shares the secret behind her bigge…

Whoopi Goldberg has revealed an unexpected secret behind some of the biggest roles of her career. The acclaimed actress recently explained that several of her most memorable movies came after other actors had turned the projects down. Speaking on the podcast Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Goldberg, 70, reflected on how she landed the lead role in the 1992 comedy Sister Act. The actress revealed that the movie was originally written with Bette Midler in mind. “They wrote that for Bette Midler,” Goldberg explained, according to reports from PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly. Midler ultimately passed on the project, opening the door for Goldberg to take on the role that would become one of her career-defining performances. (People.com) How Goldberg found major opportunities Goldberg explained that she eventually developed a strategy for finding roles that other actors had rejected. She asked her agents to send her scripts that had already been turned down by other performers. That approach proved surprisingly successful. In addition to Sister Act, Goldberg landed roles in movies that had initially been developed with other stars in mind. Burglar, for example, had originally been intended for Bruce Willis, while Jumpin’ Jack Flash was initially associated with Shelley Long. (People.com) Goldberg suggested that her experiences were partly connected to the limited opportunities available to Black actresses at the time. Rather than allowing those barriers to stop her, she looked for projects that had been passed over and found ways to make them her own. Sister Act became a career highlight Goldberg eventually transformed Sister Act into a showcase for her comedy and musical talents. She played Deloris Van Cartier, a nightclub singer who enters witness protection and is hidden in a convent. The film became a major success following its 1992 release, with Goldberg’s performance becoming closely associated with the movie. She returned for the 1993 sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. (D23) Midler has previously discussed why she rejected the role. She explained that she was concerned her audience would not want to see her wearing a nun’s habit. The decision ultimately gave Goldberg the opportunity to create an iconic character of her own. (People.com) Goldberg’s Hollywood lesson Looking back, Goldberg’s career offers an unusual lesson about opportunities. Some of her most recognizable performances came from projects that initially seemed destined for someone else. Her story also highlights how persistence can create unexpected breakthroughs. Instead of waiting for Hollywood to offer her the obvious choices, Goldberg searched for opportunities others had overlooked. Decades later, Sister Act remains one of her signature films, proving that sometimes the role that was written for someone else can become the performance audiences remember forever.

BJP lawmaker alleges son-in-law married 25 women

An Indian politician has accused his son-in-law of fraud after allegedly discovering that the man had married around 25 women using different identities. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Gyan Tiwari, who represents the Sevata constituency in Uttar Pradesh, filed a complaint against his son-in-law’s family. He alleged that his daughter was deceived into marrying a man who had concealed his alleged criminal background and previous relationships. According to the complaint, Tiwari’s daughter Pragya married Prakhar Trivedi in 2024. Prakhar is the son of Anuj Trivedi, a resident of Chandrawal. Tiwari alleged that Anuj presented himself during the marriage arrangements as a well-known real estate businessman based in Mumbai. He claimed that the family had also received positive information about the prospective groom from local sources and influential people before approving the marriage. However, the lawmaker said his family later learned about Prakhar’s alleged activities through social media and other sources. Tiwari alleged that Prakhar had used fake identities to establish relationships with women in different Indian states, particularly Maharashtra. He further accused him of allegedly obtaining large sums of money from several women. The politician claimed that Prakhar had entered into around 25 marriages. The allegations have not been independently established. Tiwari said the revelations caused severe emotional distress to his family. He also said that the incident affected his reputation as a public representative. Following the allegations, Tiwari said he had severed social and personal ties with the accused family and brought his daughter back home. Police said a case had been registered following Tiwari’s complaint at the Reusa police station. Anuj Trivedi and his son Prakhar Trivedi have reportedly been arrested as the investigation continues. Authorities are now investigating the allegations of fraud, the alleged use of multiple identities and the claims involving several marriages.

Trump claims US controls Iran’s finances

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has claimed that Washington has control over Iran’s financial resources as the conflict between the United States and Iran continues. In an interview, Trump said the US was effectively acting as a banker for Iran. He claimed Washington had control over a large amount of Iranian money. Trump also described Iran’s economic situation as extremely difficult. He alleged that the country was facing very high inflation and that its currency had lost much of its value. The US president further claimed that Iran was struggling to pay its soldiers and suggested that the economic pressure could become increasingly difficult for Tehran to sustain. Trump outlined several possible approaches toward Iran. He said Washington could maintain the current economic pressure, launch further military action or rely more heavily on financial measures. He said his main objective in the conflict was to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Trump also claimed that US military action had stopped Tehran from obtaining such a capability. Qatar urges reopening of Strait of Hormuz Meanwhile, Qatar said talks between Iran and Oman on arrangements for reopening the Strait of Hormuz had reached an advanced stage. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said the negotiations had reached a critical point. He expressed hope that the strategically important waterway would reopen as soon as possible. Qatar said it supports diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and resolving the dispute. Iran and Oman have been discussing legal and technical arrangements for the resumption of maritime traffic through the strait. Shipping activity in the area has been disrupted following the military confrontation between Iran and the United States. Tehran has linked the reopening of the waterway to the resolution of disputes surrounding what it describes as US violations of a June memorandum of understanding. Araghchi says US sought negotiations Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has claimed that Washington eventually sought negotiations with Tehran after initially demanding Iran’s unconditional surrender. Speaking during a televised press conference, Araghchi said the US had initially taken a hard-line position but later sought talks. He claimed that the change demonstrated Iran’s ability to withstand military and political pressure. Araghchi also said Iran had surprised countries around the world by resisting the United States. The Iranian foreign minister said Washington had support from Israel and several Western countries during the conflict. He also discussed the situation with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul during a telephone conversation. According to Iranian state media, Araghchi told his German counterpart that the insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz was the result of US and Israeli military actions against Iran. He briefed Wadephul on Iran’s discussions with Oman regarding the creation of a safe route for maritime traffic through the strategic waterway. The two officials also discussed bilateral relations and wider regional and international developments. Araghchi called on the international community to hold Washington accountable for what he described as the security and economic consequences of the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. He maintained that lasting security in the waterway would require an end to what Tehran considers US military aggression, maritime restrictions and violations of previous commitments.

Tabish Hashmi called out on using Kashmir for publicity

Tabish Hashmi has built his public profile on warmth, humour and a reputation for speaking his mind. His show Hasna Mana Hai made him a household name, and his film debut in Aag Lagay Basti Mein widened that profile further. But a sequence of events over the past few days has placed him at the centre of a controversy that cuts deeper than most he has faced, because it touches on something Pakistani audiences take very seriously: the sincerity of public voices when they speak on Kashmir. The sequence began when Hashmi posted on his Instagram announcing that Hasna Mana Hai had come to an end. The announcement landed at a moment of heightened public emotion, coinciding directly with his video in support of Kashmiri protesters who were demonstrating against what they described as unrest and violence in the region. The timing created an obvious and powerful impression in the minds of many followers: that his show had been shut down as a consequence of his stand on Kashmir. The response was immediate. Hashmi received an outpouring of solidarity and support from social media, with many people praising him for paying a professional price for speaking up. Then came the reveal. It turned out that Hasna Mana Hai had not been cancelled at all. The show’s set was simply being redesigned and renovated. The announcement of the show’s end was a marketing exercise to generate excitement around the new set reveal, and the Kashmir video had been used in proximity to that announcement in a way that allowed the association to form organically in the public mind without being explicitly stated. Content creator and commentator Ali Arif was among the most visible voices to call out what had happened. In a video addressing the controversy, he went through the sequence of events and pointed out precisely what Hashmi had done: posted a video about Kashmir, allowed the public to connect it to his show’s apparent end, absorbed the sympathy and support that followed, and then revealed the whole thing was a set change. He criticised Hashmi specifically for not clarifying the situation while the solidarity was pouring in, arguing that the failure to correct the impression was itself the problem. The public reaction was sharp and widely shared. “This is what is wrong with this nation. Using a tragedy for your gain,” wrote one person. Another said simply, “Such a sad state of affairs.” A third was even more pointed: “He made a mockery of taking a stand.” The controversy has prompted a genuine conversation about the ethics of celebrity activism in Pakistan, particularly when serious political or humanitarian situations are in the vicinity of promotional content. Whether the proximity of the Kashmir video and the show announcement was deliberate or poor timing, the result has been a significant erosion of goodwill from an audience that had, until this week, been squarely in Hashmi’s corner.
