Four family members killed in Lahore firing

LAHORE: A case has been registered over the killing of four members of a family in Lahore’s Chuhng area.

The incident involved a man who allegedly opened fire on his in-laws. Four people were killed in the shooting.

According to the FIR, the victims included the suspect’s wife, his father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law. The complainant alleged that the suspect carried out the killings with the involvement or encouragement of his father and brothers.

The victim’s brother told police that the family had previously registered a kidnapping case against the suspect at Sunder Police Station. He alleged that the case was filed after his sister was allegedly abducted.

Police identified the suspect as Imran Shaukat. According to officials, he had married the woman around six months ago.

The shooting took place in the Chuhng area, where the suspect allegedly targeted members of his wife’s family. The incident left four people dead and caused panic in the area.

Police said the suspect fled or moved away from the scene after the shooting before turning the weapon on himself. He died from the gunshot wound.

Investigators have registered a case and begun examining the circumstances surrounding the killings. Police are also looking into the allegations contained in the FIR regarding the suspect’s family members and the earlier kidnapping case.

Officials said further investigation would determine the exact motive behind the incident and establish the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting.

The case has raised concerns about a possible dispute between the two families following the marriage. Police are expected to question relatives and examine available evidence as part of the investigation.

    DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Two police personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), were martyred in an attack by suspected militants in the Shah Alam Mor area within the jurisdiction of Choudhwan Police Station, while an armoured personnel carrier (APC) of Daraban Police also came under attack in a separate incident. No casualties were reported in the APC attack. According to Regional Police Officer (RPO) Dera Ismail Khan Ghulam Mubashir Maken, unidentified armed men attempted to stop two motorcycle riders in the Choudhwan area last night. When they did not stop, the assailants opened fire, killing a civilian identified as Adnan. Following the incident, local residents blocked Daraban Road in protest on Sunday morning. Police held negotiations with the protesters and succeeded in reopening the road for traffic. While returning after the negotiations, four Choudhwan police personnel travelling on two motorcycles came under a sudden attack near Shah Alam Mor. The militants opened indiscriminate fire on the policemen, resulting in the martyrdom of ASI Faqeer Muhammad, a resident of Jhok Sikandar Paroa, and Head Constable Wazir Khan. Heavy police contingents rushed to the scene after receiving information about the attack, while local residents also reached the area to assist the police. The attackers fled after the firing. Police and security forces subsequently launched a search operation in the surrounding area. In a separate incident, the police party accompanying the SHO of Choudhwan Police Station and an APC of Daraban Police, led by APC in-charge Abid Hussain, came under fire from militants at Darazinda Mor while returning after the protest. The police retaliated, forcing the attackers to flee. No loss of life was reported in the incident. Police and security forces immediately reached the site and launched a search operation to track down the attackers. Martyrs Laid to Rest with Full State Honours The funeral prayers of martyred police personnel ASI Faqeer Ahmed and Head Constable Wazir Ahmed were offered at Ejaz Shaheed Police Lines in Dera Ismail Khan with full official honours. Station Commander Brigadier Muhammad Abu Bakar, RPO Ghulam Mubashir Maken, DPO Ziauddin Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner Hikmatullah Wazir, SP CTD Iftikhar Ali Shah, senior civil and police officers, Pakistan Army officers, government officials, local elders, civil society representatives and the families of the martyrs attended the funeral. A smartly turned out police contingent presented a guard of honour to the martyrs, whose bodies were wrapped in the national flag. Senior officials and other participants laid floral wreaths on the coffins and offered prayers for the elevation of the martyrs’ ranks, the security of Pakistan and lasting peace. After the funeral, RPO Ghulam Mubashir Maken and DPO Ziauddin Ahmed met the families of the martyrs and expressed their condolences and solidarity. The RPO said the martyrs were an asset to the nation and a source of pride for the police department, adding that their sacrifices would always be remembered. He vowed that the blood of the martyrs would not go in vain and that the elements involved in the Shah Alam Mor attack would be arrested and brought to justice at the earliest. He said action would also be taken against their facilitators without discrimination. Ghulam Mubashir Maken said Dera police would continue performing its duties with full force, professional commitment and national spirit until the menace of terrorism was completely eliminated. He added that efforts to maintain peace and protect the lives and property of citizens would continue.

    26 personnel killed: AJK police blame JAAC

    Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Police have accused the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) of deliberately targeting law enforcement agencies during recent unrest in the region. AJK Police spokesperson and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Riaz Mughal made the allegations during a press conference on Wednesday. He said 26 police and other law enforcement personnel had been killed in incidents of unrest across AJK during 2026. He claimed that another 157 personnel had suffered serious injuries, while 629 others sustained minor injuries. Mughal did not provide details of each incident linked to the reported casualties. He questioned how the JAAC protests could be described as peaceful if law enforcement personnel were being killed and injured. The police spokesperson said state institutions did not target people without reason. He claimed that security personnel took action against individuals who attacked law enforcement agencies. His comments came after clashes between protesters and security personnel in Rawalakot and Mirpur earlier this week. The incidents reportedly resulted in several casualties. The JAAC has been protesting for several weeks over various public demands. One of its key demands is the abolition of 12 seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly reserved for refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir. Mughal alleged that protesters had attacked police and Rangers personnel during the unrest. He also claimed that some people had been held captive and that their identity documents had been taken. The SSP urged people to visit AJK and observe the situation independently. He said the nature of the protests and the activities of those participating should be assessed impartially. Mughal further alleged that some protesters were equipped with firearms and claimed that police and other law enforcement personnel had been targeted by snipers. During the briefing, police officials displayed weapons they said had been recovered during operations against protesters. Mughal claimed the weapons had been used against law enforcement personnel. He also referred to previous clashes involving the JAAC. According to Mughal, a confrontation on May 11, 2024, occurred when police attempted to stop protesters travelling towards Muzaffarabad. He said one police officer was killed and around 60 personnel suffered serious injuries. He added that 174 other policemen sustained minor injuries. The SSP also cited unrest in October 2025. He claimed that three police officers were killed, 52 personnel suffered serious injuries and another 357 were injured in the incidents. Mughal described the protesters involved in violent incidents as anti-state elements. He alleged that some were involved in activities that amounted to terrorism. He further claimed that around 70 per cent of the protesters were criminals, including alleged drug dealers who had joined the protests under the JAAC banner. The allegations were made by the police official and were not independently verified. The police spokesperson’s remarks came amid heightened tensions in AJK following several days of protests and clashes. The government has also alleged that militant elements linked to a foreign agenda and allegedly backed by Indian funding were attempting to fuel unrest in the region.

    ECC approves Rs4.188bn PASSCO compensation package

    The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved a Rs4.188 billion compensation package for employees of the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO). The decision is part of the government’s plan to wind up PASSCO. The process is also linked to the disposal of the corporation’s wheat stocks. The government has set December 2026 as the deadline for completing the process. The ECC directed that the winding-up process must be independently reviewed. A third party will validate the process to ensure transparency and compliance with the approved plan. The committee also stressed the need to dispose of PASSCO’s wheat stocks as soon as possible. Officials said the early disposal of the stocks would help implement the employee compensation package on time. The Ministry of National Food Security and Research assured the ECC that the process would be completed by December. The government began work on the closure of PASSCO in 2025. The Prime Minister’s Office had directed the finance minister to oversee the process in consultation with the relevant ministry. A meeting chaired by the finance minister later decided that a severance package should be prepared for PASSCO employees. The package was designed along the lines of the voluntary separation scheme approved for employees of the Utility Stores Corporation. PASSCO’s Board of Directors subsequently approved the revised compensation package. The scheme covers regular employees as well as contractual and daily-wage workers. It includes severance compensation and several terminal benefits. These include leave encashment and a farewell grant. The package also provides maintenance support for widows and retired employees through PASSCO’s Benevolent Fund. The ECC had previously approved the winding up of PASSCO. It also approved the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle called the Wheat Stock Management Company (WSMC) Public Limited. The federal cabinet later ratified the decision. The total cost of the employee package is estimated at Rs4.188 billion. Around Rs3.967 billion has been allocated for severance compensation and terminal benefits for PASSCO employees. Another Rs221 million has been set aside for maintenance grants. The amount will benefit 38 widows and 236 retired employees.
