Pakistan auto sales jump 80% in July

Pakistan’s automobile sector started fiscal year 2026-27 on a strong note, with overall vehicle sales rising nearly 80% year-on-year in July 2026, according to data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA).

Sales of cars, light commercial vehicles, vans, jeeps and electric vehicles reached 19,818 units during the month, compared with 11,034 units in July 2025. However, sales fell 13% month-on-month from the 22,741 units recorded in June.

Analysts attributed the annual increase to stronger passenger-car demand, new vehicle launches, the entry of new manufacturers and growing auto financing. Leena Abid of Arif Habib Limited said passenger-car sales led the overall growth, jumping 141% year-on-year. She noted that June had benefited from pre-budget purchases, while uncertainty over the new Auto Policy affected bookings in July.

Pak Suzuki recorded the highest sales at 10,120 units, representing a 175% year-on-year increase, although its sales declined 12% from June. Indus Motor Company sold 5,089 units, up 53% annually and 45% from the previous month. Honda Atlas Cars reported 2,640 units, marking a 76% annual increase but an 11% monthly decline. Sazgar Engineering sold 663 passenger vehicles.

The two-wheeler market also performed strongly, with industry sales increasing 39% year-on-year to around 169,713 units, although volumes slipped slightly from June. Atlas Honda continued to dominate the segment.

Commercial vehicles also recorded substantial annual growth. Truck sales surged 169% year-on-year, while bus sales increased 14%. Ghandhara Automobiles sold 111 trucks, up 247% annually and 31% month-on-month. Ghandhara Industries reported 424 units, a 212% year-on-year increase.

Meanwhile, tractor sales rose 4% year-on-year to 1,242 units but plunged 59% from June. Al-Ghazi Tractors sold 414 units, up 29% annually, while Millat Tractors recorded 828 units, down 5% year-on-year.

Analysts expect market performance to remain closely linked to the new Auto Policy, financing conditions and consumer demand in the coming months.

    The Young Doctors Federation has launched a strong campaign against the current postgraduate (PG) medical induction testing system, calling for an end to what it describes as unnecessary and repetitive examinations for doctors seeking admission to postgraduate training programmes. Dr Hassan Baloch, Convener of the Young Doctors Federation, said the federation had begun a vigorous movement against the postgraduate induction test, drawing a parallel with its previous efforts that led to the elimination of the National Licensing Examination (NLE). He said doctors already face multiple examinations during their medical education and professional careers, and forcing them to sit for several tests for the same postgraduate induction purpose creates an additional burden. He demanded a simpler and more transparent system based on merit. Dr Baloch proposed two possible alternatives. The authorities should either use FCPS Part-I or the Joint Centralized Admission Test (JCAT) as the basis for postgraduate induction, or introduce a single national postgraduate entrance examination for doctors across the country. He argued that conducting multiple examinations for the same objective wastes candidates’ time, increases financial pressure through repeated examination fees, and creates unnecessary complications for medical graduates competing for postgraduate training positions. The Young Doctors Federation also called for a unified and transparent induction mechanism that ensures equal opportunities for all eligible doctors. Dr Baloch pointed to the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT), which serves as a common entrance examination for undergraduate medical admissions, and India’s NEET-PG system as examples of centralized testing models. He stressed that Pakistan should also adopt a single, transparent and merit-based mechanism for postgraduate medical induction instead of requiring doctors to navigate multiple examinations and selection processes. The federation’s campaign seeks reforms in the postgraduate induction system and aims to push authorities toward a more streamlined process that reduces the burden on doctors while ensuring fair and merit-based admissions to postgraduate medical training.

    AI manipulation claimed in PARC hiring; 105 candidates still waiting

    Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security erupted in controversy today as concerns over recruitment at the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) were aired with unprecedented intensity. Senators claimed that the federal research body may have violated constitutional equity, leaving candidates from Sindh and Balochistan sidelined while Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa dominated appointments. At the heart of the storm are 230 vacant posts at PARC. Although the posts were advertised nationwide and tested through the third party Candidates Testing Services (CTS), only 125 candidates have received appointment letters, leaving 105 hopefuls in limbo. Senator Poonjo Bheel voiced sharp criticism, accusing PARC of sidelining smaller provinces, potentially breaching Article 38(g) of the Constitution. “Appointments have disproportionately favored Punjab and KP,” he warned, “while Sindh and Balochistan candidates are deprived of their due share.” PARC representatives defended their process, noting that a few Sindh candidates were appointed purely on merit and promising interviews for remaining Sindh and Balochistan candidates in the coming week. Yet, the Committee remained unconvinced. Senators stressed that results should be announced simultaneously across all provinces, warning that staggered releases could create perceptions of bias. The session took an even more sensational turn when officials revealed allegations of a coordinated propaganda campaign against PARC. Officials claimed that artificial intelligence (AI) may have been used to manipulate recruitment results, prompting the Committee to recommend immediate show cause notices for any employees involved in such activities. The Chairman directed PARC to submit a detailed list of the appointing authorities responsible for each recruitment decision and a comprehensive record of the 105 pending candidates’ interviews. The Committee demanded transparency and accountability to prevent further distrust in the nation’s premier agricultural research body. The Committee’s stern message made it clear: “Merit alone cannot justify provincial inequity, and any manipulation digital or human will not be tolerated.” The meeting was attended by Senators Rahat Jamali, Shahadat Awan, and Poonjo Bheel, with the agenda moved by Senator Shahadat Awan deferred due to the absence of the Federal Minister and Secretary.

    Pakistan strikes landmark offshore gas find

    KARACHI: Pakistan has recorded a significant breakthrough in hydrocarbon exploration with the discovery of high-quality gas from a new petroleum play. Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced that its exploration well, Dolphin, drilled in the company-operated Sarani Block in Sujawal district, Sindh, has yielded a major gas discovery. The find marks the first hydrocarbon discovery from the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation in the Lower Indus Basin, according to PPL. The company said the discovery confirms the existence of an active petroleum system and could open fresh opportunities for exploration in the onshore swamp region and its potentially prospective shallow marine extensions.
