Pakistan auto sales jump 80% in July

Pakistan’s automobile sector started fiscal year 2026-27 on a strong note, with overall vehicle sales rising nearly 80% year-on-year in July 2026, according to data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA).

Sales of cars, light commercial vehicles, vans, jeeps and electric vehicles reached 19,818 units during the month, compared with 11,034 units in July 2025. However, sales fell 13% month-on-month from the 22,741 units recorded in June.

Analysts attributed the annual increase to stronger passenger-car demand, new vehicle launches, the entry of new manufacturers and growing auto financing. Leena Abid of Arif Habib Limited said passenger-car sales led the overall growth, jumping 141% year-on-year. She noted that June had benefited from pre-budget purchases, while uncertainty over the new Auto Policy affected bookings in July.

Pak Suzuki recorded the highest sales at 10,120 units, representing a 175% year-on-year increase, although its sales declined 12% from June. Indus Motor Company sold 5,089 units, up 53% annually and 45% from the previous month. Honda Atlas Cars reported 2,640 units, marking a 76% annual increase but an 11% monthly decline. Sazgar Engineering sold 663 passenger vehicles.

The two-wheeler market also performed strongly, with industry sales increasing 39% year-on-year to around 169,713 units, although volumes slipped slightly from June. Atlas Honda continued to dominate the segment.

Commercial vehicles also recorded substantial annual growth. Truck sales surged 169% year-on-year, while bus sales increased 14%. Ghandhara Automobiles sold 111 trucks, up 247% annually and 31% month-on-month. Ghandhara Industries reported 424 units, a 212% year-on-year increase.

Meanwhile, tractor sales rose 4% year-on-year to 1,242 units but plunged 59% from June. Al-Ghazi Tractors sold 414 units, up 29% annually, while Millat Tractors recorded 828 units, down 5% year-on-year.

Analysts expect market performance to remain closely linked to the new Auto Policy, financing conditions and consumer demand in the coming months.

The move comes as Islamabad continues to pursue a strategy of securing rollover agreements and refinancing facilities from friendly countries and international partners to meet its debt servicing commitments. Maintaining adequate foreign exchange reserves has remained a key priority for economic managers as Pakistan seeks to strengthen investor confidence and sustain financial stability. Economic experts believe that successful refinancing of the Chinese loan would provide temporary relief to the country’s external financing position while allowing policymakers greater flexibility in managing upcoming debt obligations. Officials said talks with Chinese financial institutions are progressing positively, although the final timeline will depend on the completion of documentation and agreement on financing terms. The refinancing request also reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to manage its external debt profile prudently amid global economic uncertainties and higher financing costs in international markets.

    LAHORE: The deaths of two young women in police custody have raised fresh questions after their autopsy reports revealed black spots on their lungs and blood clots in their hearts, while failing to find visible signs of physical assault or torture. The two women, identified as Amina and Anmol, died while in the custody of Lahore’s Township police. According to sources, their post-mortem examinations found no external injuries or marks suggesting physical violence. Samples of their blood and internal organs have now been sent for histopathological testing, which is expected to help establish the final cause of death. The autopsies were conducted two days after the deaths and the reports were finalised after the medical board reached a consensus. Doctors found the women’s livers, kidneys and stomachs to be in normal condition, while black spots were observed on both sets of lungs and clots were detected in their hearts. The findings have not yet provided a definitive explanation for the deaths. Authorities are waiting for the histopathology results before determining the final cause. The families of the deceased have meanwhile called for an independent and transparent investigation. Tajamul Hussain, the father of one of the women, rejected the police version that the deaths were linked to a medical condition. He questioned how both women could have suffered fatal heart problems while in custody and alleged that they were killed. Police have denied the allegations. SSP Investigation Naveed Ahmed said the women had previous criminal records and were arrested after a passerby contacted Police Emergency 15 and reported that they had allegedly snatched an earring. The officer also claimed that the women used drugs but firmly rejected allegations that they were tortured or mistreated during their detention. With the histopathology reports still awaited, the investigation is expected to focus on the women’s medical condition, their treatment while in custody and the circumstances leading up to their deaths.

    Heavy rainfall disrupted routine life across Lahore on Saturday, leaving several roads, underpasses and low-lying neighbourhoods inundated and causing difficulties for motorists and pedestrians. The downpour led to significant water accumulation in different parts of the city, slowing traffic and making several routes difficult to navigate. Residents in low-lying areas faced particular inconvenience as rainwater gathered on streets and roads. According to rainfall figures recorded by the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), Lahore received an average of 24.6 millimetres of rain. The highest rainfall was recorded at Lahore Airport, where 104mm was reported. Kahna received 75.6mm, while 62.6mm was recorded at Hadiara Defence Road and 58.6mm at Manawan. Rainfall was also recorded in Tajpura, Mughalpura, Shadipura, Defence Phase-VI, Farrukhabad, Saggian, Lakshmi Chowk, Chowk Nakhuda and other areas. Although the rain provided relief from the prevailing heat and brought cooler weather, waterlogging created problems for commuters and once again highlighted the challenges faced by Lahore’s low-lying areas during heavy showers. Wasa Lahore mobilised field teams and heavy machinery to remove accumulated water from affected locations. Officials continued drainage operations at several underpasses, major roads and low-lying points across the city. Wasa Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed inspected drainage activities at several key locations, including Mubeen Shaheed Underpass, Noor Jehan Road, MM Alam Road, Main Boulevard Gulberg, Qaddafi Stadium and Liberty Chowk. He also reviewed operations at Kalma Chowk Underpass and other emergency drainage facilities. Officials said disposal stations in areas affected by power outages were being operated with generators to ensure that drainage work continued without interruption. Wasa Vice Chairman Chaudhry Shehbaz Ahmed also inspected water drainage arrangements at several locations, including Shalimar Link Road, Bhagwanpura, UET and nearby areas. Meanwhile, Chief Traffic Officer Abdul Rahim Shirazi directed traffic officials to remain present in the field and closely monitor traffic flow and vulnerable points during the rainfall. Traffic police coordinated with Wasa teams to facilitate the removal of standing water and advised motorists to drive carefully on slippery roads. Drivers were urged to maintain a safe distance, avoid sudden braking and reduce speed. Motorcyclists were advised to wear helmets and avoid unnecessary overtaking. Citizens were also warned against entering roads where floodwater appeared deep or unsafe.

    KARACHI: Investigators probing the murder of young businessman Mir Raza are facing challenges in completing geo-fencing around the crime scene, with the passage of several days making it harder to accurately reconstruct movements in the area. According to investigative sources, the crime scene is located near a hilly area that has been subjected to geo-fencing. Mobile towers belonging to three different telecom companies are situated around the location, allowing investigators to collect data on mobile activity in the vicinity. Sources said geo-fencing has so far produced location data covering several blocks of Gulistan-i-Jauhar. However, because considerable time has elapsed since the incident, investigators are finding it difficult to establish which individuals were present near the crime scene at the relevant time. Police have also collected various pieces of evidence from the surrounding area. Investigators reportedly conducted a search within a radius of around 500 metres from the location where the body was found. Meanwhile, the newly formed investigation committee has obtained details linked to Mir Raza’s smartwatch. Investigators are now attempting to retrieve the device’s complete data, which could potentially provide additional information about his movements and activities before his death. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to combine digital records, physical evidence and device data to determine what happened in the final hours of Mir Raza’s life.
