Pakistan clinch seventh World Youth Scrabble Crown

Pakistan has once again stamped its authority on the international youth Scrabble scene, winning the World Youth Scrabble Championship team title for a record seventh time after an impressive campaign.

The 21st edition of the championship featured 183 players from 11 countries, with Pakistani youngsters producing a series of standout performances across different age categories.

Pakistan finished first in the team competition, while Australia’s Dineth Fernando claimed the overall individual world title. Three Pakistani players also secured places among the top 10 in the individual standings.

The country’s success extended across several age groups. Ahmed Salman captured the Under-16 world title, while Ahad Sault Fatimi emerged champion in the Under-14 category.

Pakistan also celebrated success in the Under-12 competition, where Mustafa Farhan finished as runner-up.

One of the most remarkable performances came from Pakistan’s youngest competitor, Taimur Wasim, who won the Under-10 world title.

Taimur’s latest triumph adds another chapter to his rapidly growing Scrabble record. The young player had already impressed last year by winning the Under-8 world championship, and he has now moved up an age group while continuing his winning run.

The results underline the depth of young Scrabble talent in Pakistan, with players competing successfully against strong international opposition.

Winning the team championship for the seventh time is particularly significant, reinforcing Pakistan’s reputation as one of the leading nations in youth Scrabble.

The strong showing across multiple age categories also suggests a promising future for the country’s Scrabble programme, as a new generation of players continues to make its mark on the global stage.

SC rules widow entitled to deceased’s pensio…

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that the widow of a deceased retired employee is the lawful recipient of the employee’s pension and post-retirement benefits, clarifying that siblings cannot claim such benefits solely on the basis of being legal heirs. The ruling was issued in a detailed four-page written judgment authored by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. The decision provides important legal clarification on the distribution of pension and retirement benefits after the death of a retired government employee. According to the judgment, pension is not treated as inherited property that can automatically be divided among all legal heirs. Instead, the court held that pension payments are governed by the relevant laws, service rules and institutional regulations. The Supreme Court stated that the widow of a deceased retired employee has the primary legal right to receive the pension and related benefits. It further observed that if a person has been legally nominated under the applicable rules, that nominee would also be entitled to receive the benefits. The court made it clear that brothers and sisters cannot claim a deceased employee’s pension merely because they are legal heirs under inheritance laws. It explained that pension rights arise from specific statutory provisions and are separate from the general rules governing inheritance. The judgment emphasised that all pension payments must be made strictly in accordance with the applicable laws and the regulations of the concerned institution. Authorities responsible for disbursing pensions must follow these legal provisions while determining the rightful beneficiary. The case reached the Supreme Court after the siblings of a deceased employee of the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) challenged an earlier court ruling and sought a succession certificate to claim pension-related benefits. After reviewing the case, the apex court dismissed the appeal and upheld the decision of the Peshawar High Court, which had ruled that the siblings were not entitled to receive the deceased employee’s pension. The Supreme Court observed that pension is a statutory benefit and cannot be distributed under ordinary inheritance principles unless specifically permitted by the relevant legal framework.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Château Miraval …

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s former French estate, Château Miraval, has reportedly escaped damage despite dangerous wildfires burning in parts of southern France. According to TMZ, smoke was seen rising near the famous winery on Friday as firefighters continued battling fast-moving blazes across the region. While the sight of thick smoke sparked concern among fans, aerial images reportedly showed no visible damage to the historic property. Authorities have continued to monitor the situation as changing weather conditions keep the fire risk high. (tmz.com) Château Miraval, located in the Provence region of southern France, has remained in the spotlight for years because of both its award-winning rosé wine and the ongoing legal dispute between Jolie and Pitt over ownership of the estate. The former couple purchased the property together in 2011 and married there in 2014 before separating two years later. Since then, Miraval has become a central issue in their lengthy legal battle. (apnews.com) The latest concern comes as southern France faces another challenging wildfire season. High temperatures, dry vegetation and strong winds have fueled several fires across the region, prompting emergency responses and temporary evacuations in affected communities. Firefighters have been working around the clock to contain the flames and protect homes, forests and historic landmarks. (reuters.com) Although smoke was visible near Château Miraval, reports indicate that the estate itself has not suffered any confirmed structural damage. Emergency crews have continued monitoring the area to ensure the fire does not spread closer to the property. Officials have also urged residents and visitors to follow safety instructions as weather conditions remain unpredictable. (tmz.com) Beyond the immediate wildfire threat, Miraval continues to attract attention because of the legal fight between Jolie and Pitt. In recent years, the former spouses have exchanged lawsuits over Jolie’s sale of her stake in the winery to the Stoli Group’s wine division, with Pitt arguing that the sale violated an earlier agreement. The dispute remains unresolved and has become one of Hollywood’s most closely watched legal battles. (apnews.com) For now, the focus has shifted from the courtroom to the safety of the estate and surrounding communities. The apparent lack of damage to Château Miraval has come as welcome news, but officials warn that wildfire conditions can change rapidly. As firefighters continue their efforts across southern France, the situation remains fluid. While Miraval appears to have avoided harm, authorities say continued vigilance is essential until the fires are fully contained. The incident serves as another reminder of the growing impact of extreme wildfire seasons across Europe and the importance of protecting both communities and cultural landmarks.

ISLAMABAD: The extension of the tenure of Professor Dr Nusrat Shah, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), Larkana, has reportedly prompted vice chancellors of several public-sector universities across Sindh to seek extensions as their first terms approach completion. Trump’s generic drug tariff plan puts US-India pharma ties to test

A newly announced tariff schedule introduced by President Donald Trump targeting generic pharmaceutical imports is expected to significantly affect the deep trade relationship between the United States and India, which serves as the principal supplier of generic medicines to the American market. Indian drug manufacturers currently supply roughly half of all generic pharmaceuticals consumed in the United States, with the American market generating close to a third of India’s overall pharmaceutical export earnings. The scale of this commercial exposure means the newly outlined tariff timeline, despite featuring a two-year grace period, has immediately drawn close scrutiny from Indian pharmaceutical firms and market analysts due to the critical role US sales play in corporate revenues. The policy introduces additional uncertainty to a bilateral trade dynamic already strained by recent tariff disputes, raising the stakes for Indian manufacturers as they decide whether to commit capital toward expanding domestic manufacturing inside the United States or absorb steep import duties in the future. Trump outlined a phased tariff framework for generic medications entering the United States. Under this timeline, generic drug imports will continue to enter duty-free under a zero per cent tariff until August 1, 2028, marking a two-year transition window from the policy’s effective date. Following this grace period, a 100 per cent tariff will apply for one year, after which the import levy will rise to 200 per cent. Trump framed the escalated duties as a penal mechanism designed to compel foreign pharmaceutical companies to construct manufacturing facilities on American soil within the allotted timeframe, rather than remaining reliant on overseas production plants. He explicitly distinguished this new generic drug framework from the administration’s policy on branded and patented pharmaceuticals, stating that existing regulations for branded drugs would remain unchanged due to their ongoing success. Reports citing White House details indicate that the new generic tariffs will be executed under Section 232 trade authority, matching the legal foundation used for the administration’s earlier tariffs placed on branded pharmaceuticals in April. Trump also highlighted what he described as an unprecedented surge in new domestic pharmaceutical plant construction currently underway across the United States, presenting the new tariff schedule as a measure to reinforce an existing shift toward onshore manufacturing. The policy holds major implications for the broader American healthcare system and global exporters because generic medications account for nearly 90 per cent of all prescriptions filled in the United States. This action follows previous interventions in the pharmaceutical sector, including the 100 per cent tariff placed on branded drugs starting in October 2025, alongside a most-favoured-nation pricing push. That pricing policy led more than a dozen major pharmaceutical corporations, including Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk, to conclude agreements to reduce US drug prices in exchange for multi-year exemptions from import duties. For Indian drugmakers, the two-year transition window provides initial breathing room but lacks long-term security. Indian generic manufacturers now face the choice of allocating capital to construct or expand production facilities within the United States before the 2028 deadline, or facing severe cost disadvantages once the punitive tariffs take effect. Industry analysts expect to monitor whether major Indian drug companies will announce accelerated manufacturing investments in the United States over the coming months as the sector formulates its response.
