    Iranian footballers become Australian citizens

Two Iranian women footballers who refused to publicly support their government’s stance during an international tournament have officially become Australian citizens after seeking protection in Australia earlier this year. Atefeh Ramezanisadeh, 34, and Fatemeh Pasandideh, 22, received their Australian citizenship at a ceremony in Brisbane on Wednesday, marking the end of a journey that began when they chose not to return to Iran following the Women’s Asian Cup. The pair were among seven members of Iran’s national women’s football team who were granted humanitarian visas while in Australia. However, five of the players later returned to Iran, while Ramezanisadeh and Pasandideh remained, citing concerns about their safety. The players drew international attention after refusing to sing Iran’s national anthem before their opening match during the tournament. Their silent protest came amid heightened tensions following the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, raising fears they could face punishment if they returned home. Australian authorities allowed the athletes to seek asylum after appeals from members of the Iranian community living in Australia. Their citizenship was formally granted at a ceremony attended by Australia’s Interior Minister, Tony Burke. Speaking after the ceremony, Pasandideh described becoming an Australian citizen as the beginning of a new chapter in her life, while Ramezanisadeh said the moment reflected years of hardship and sacrifice. Both expressed gratitude for the opportunity to build a future in Australia. The footballers are now training with Brisbane Roar FC Women and hope to continue their professional football careers in the country. Their decision to remain in Australia followed reports that Iranian state media criticised members of the national team for remaining silent during the anthem, with some commentators branding them disloyal. Human rights advocates also voiced concerns that players who returned to Iran may have faced pressure through threats directed at their families.

According to meteorologists, the intense low-pressure system that had developed over southern Madhya Pradesh has weakened further. It is now located near Rajasthan as a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to weaken further over the next 24 hours. Despite weakening, the system continues to draw monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the upper and central parts of Pakistan. At the same time, a westerly weather system is also affecting the country’s northern regions, creating favourable conditions for rainfall in several areas. The Met Office said Karachi is likely to receive rain with thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon or evening through August 3 under the influence of the weather system. Weather experts also forecast intermittent rain accompanied by dust storms and thunderstorms in Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mithi until August 3. Similar weather conditions are expected in Sanghar, Hyderabad and surrounding districts during the same period. The department also cautioned that heavy rain, strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures. Viral protest turns Indian model into symbol of resistance

Indian model and social media personality Riya Aher has become a symbol of resistance after standing in front of a police van during a student protest in Mumbai. Her action, captured on video and widely shared online, has drawn nationwide attention and sparked debate over the handling of student demonstrations in India. The incident took place on Wednesday at Shivaji Park in Mumbai’s Dadar area, where students had gathered to protest alleged irregularities in examinations. The demonstrators were demanding greater transparency in the examination process and calling for the resignation of India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. According to Indian media reports, 27-year-old Riya Aher arrived at the protest to express solidarity with the students. As she approached the demonstration site, she noticed a police van carrying a large number of detained students. Concerned about the situation, she questioned police officers about the legal basis for the arrests and asked whether they had arrest warrants for those taken into custody. Riya said the officers did not provide a clear answer. Believing that the students were being treated unfairly, she decided to stand directly in front of the police vehicle, preventing it from moving. She later said she could not remain silent because she believed it was her responsibility as a citizen to speak out against what she considered an injustice. Her action quickly attracted the attention of other protesters and passersby. More people gathered around the police vehicle and joined the demonstration. While officials have not publicly commented on her claim, videos of the confrontation spread rapidly across social media platforms, where many users praised her courage and peaceful protest. Speaking about the viral video, Riya said mobile phone cameras play an important role in documenting events and ensuring accountability. She noted that although young people are often criticised for recording videos on their phones, such recordings can become valuable evidence during public demonstrations and other important incidents. She repeated her demand for the education minister’s resignation and urged authorities to respect the democratic right to peaceful protest.
