West Indies post 344 as Sajid Khan shines, Pakistan face must-win Test

PORT OF SPAIN: Pakistan’s hopes of leveling the two-match Test series remain alive after restricting the West Indies to 344 all out on the opening innings of the second Test, thanks largely to an impressive four-wicket haul from off-spinner Sajid Khan. After winning the toss at Port of Spain, West Indies captain Roston Chase opted to bat first, a decision that paid dividends as his side produced several valuable partnerships to build a competitive first-innings total. Middle-order batter Justin Greaves led the resistance with a composed 73, while captain Chase contributed a determined 70 to anchor the innings. Opener Brandon King added 46, with Shai Hope making 29 and Amir Jangoo chipping in with 26. Pakistan’s bowlers, however, fought back effectively after the hosts appeared set for an even bigger total. Sajid Khan emerged as the standout performer, using sharp turn and disciplined lines to finish with four wickets and halt West Indies’ progress at crucial moments. Fast bowlers Obaid Shah, Mohammad Ali and Ali Usman also made significant contributions, claiming two wickets each to ensure the home side was bowled out for 344. Speaking at the toss, Pakistan captain Babar Azam revealed that he would also have chosen to bat first had he won the toss. He expressed confidence in his squad, saying the team was determined to play positive cricket and bounce back strongly after losing the opening Test. On the other hand, Roston Chase said his team wanted to turn its home ground into a fortress and therefore retained the same playing XI for the crucial encounter. The second Test carries enormous significance for Pakistan, who trail 1-0 in the two-match series. A victory is essential to square the series, while another defeat would hand the West Indies an emphatic series triumph. With the hosts setting a challenging target of 344 in the first innings, all eyes are now on Pakistan’s batting lineup. The visitors will need a disciplined and resilient performance to seize control of the contest and keep their hopes of salvaging the series alive.

Pakistan explores diplomatic efforts to revive US-…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is exploring the possibility of helping revive stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran in an effort to reduce tensions and move toward ending the conflict that has continued for nearly five months. According to informed Pakistani sources, the latest diplomatic initiative follows encouragement from China, which has expressed support for Islamabad’s mediation efforts in the region. The renewed diplomatic discussions reportedly gained momentum during the recent visit of Iran’s Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni, to Islamabad. It was his second visit to Pakistan within ten days, highlighting the growing importance of diplomatic engagement between the two neighboring countries amid the ongoing regional crisis. During his visit, Momeni held meetings with senior Pakistani officials, including government leaders and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. While official statements confirmed the meetings, details of the discussions were not made public. However, sources familiar with the matter indicated that the possibility of restarting indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran was among the issues discussed. Despite these efforts, officials acknowledged that significant challenges remain before meaningful dialogue can resume. Deep mistrust between the United States and Iran, combined with recent military escalations across the Middle East, continues to complicate prospects for renewed negotiations. Pakistan’s role as a potential mediator has become increasingly delicate due to rapidly evolving regional developments. Earlier this week, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement announced a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, one of Pakistan’s closest regional allies. Islamabad has strongly condemned the recent Houthi attacks, reaffirming its support for Saudi Arabia, with which it signed a mutual defence treaty last year. According to the sources, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also discussed the evolving Middle East situation with Chinese officials during his recent visit to Beijing. Although Pakistani authorities have not publicly commented on the discussions, China has confirmed its support for mediation efforts led by Pakistan and other regional partners. In an official statement, China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing supports diplomatic initiatives aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Gulf region. The ministry also reaffirmed China’s commitment to playing an active role in encouraging dialogue and reducing tensions across the Middle East. China remains Iran’s largest trading partner and the primary buyer of Iranian crude oil despite international sanctions. Over the years, Beijing has also expanded cooperation with Tehran in areas such as technology, satellite navigation systems, and dual-use industrial components, although it has not publicly provided direct military assistance during the current conflict. Pakistan’s latest diplomatic initiative follows earlier mediation efforts undertaken jointly with Qatar. In June, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding designed to create a 60-day framework for negotiations aimed at reaching a long-term agreement. However, indirect talks failed to produce meaningful progress, with both sides accusing each other of violating the understanding, ultimately leading to renewed hostilities. The regional security situation has deteriorated further after the Houthis claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi oil tankers as part of their naval blockade. The development has raised concerns over global energy supplies and increased fears that another major shipping route could be disrupted alongside the already vulnerable Strait of Hormuz. Pakistani officials believe that ending attacks on Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries is now essential before any negotiations between the United States and Iran can resume. According to one official, Islamabad has already conveyed this position to Iranian authorities, emphasizing that regional stability will be a necessary first step toward successful diplomatic engagement. As tensions continue to rise, Pakistan, supported by China, appears determined to pursue dialogue as a means of preventing further escalation and encouraging a peaceful resolution to one of the Middle East’s most pressing conflicts.

Babar Azam equals Imran Khan’s historic Pakistan record

Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has added another major milestone to his glittering career, equalling a historic record previously held by legendary captain Imran Khan after being named Player of the Series against the West Indies. Babar shared the award with West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves after Pakistan fought back to level the two-match Test series 1-1 with an impressive eight-wicket victory in the second Test. The right-handed batter was Pakistan’s standout performer throughout the series, scoring 193 runs in four innings at an outstanding average of 96.50, making him the leading run-scorer of the contest. His consistent contributions proved crucial as Pakistan recovered from defeat in the opening Test to finish the series on level terms. Babar began the series with 23 runs in the first innings of the opening Test before producing a composed half-century in the second innings. He then followed it with a fluent 88 in the first innings of the second Test and remained unbeaten on 24 off 30 balls in the final innings, helping Pakistan complete a comfortable chase. The shared Player of the Series honour marked the first such award of Babar’s Test career and the 10th of his international career, placing him alongside Pakistan’s greatest cricketing icons. Before this achievement, Babar had won five Player of the Series awards in T20 Internationals and four in One-Day Internationals. His latest success means he has now equalled Imran Khan and Wasim Akram, who also finished their illustrious international careers with 10 Player of the Series awards each. Former fast-bowling great Waqar Younis occupies fourth place on Pakistan’s all-time list with nine awards. The latest milestone further strengthens Babar’s legacy as one of Pakistan’s finest modern-day cricketers. Having already established himself among the country’s leading batters across formats, the 31-year-old continues to rewrite record books while leading the national Test side, proving once again that consistency and class remain the hallmarks of his career.

LHC acquits man sentenced to life for wife’s…

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court ( LHC) has overturned the life imprisonment sentence of a man convicted of murdering his wife, ruling that the prosecution failed to establish his guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh issued a detailed 19-page written judgment, allowing the appeal filed by the convict, Tanveer, and ordering his immediate release. According to the verdict, Tanveer maintained that he was on duty at a petrol station at the time of the incident and denied any involvement in the killing of his wife. The court observed that the prosecution had failed to produce reliable and convincing evidence to support the allegations against him. The judgment concluded that the available evidence was insufficient to sustain the conviction, leading the court to set aside the trial court’s decision and acquit the appellant. Tanveer had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 by a trial court after being found guilty of his wife’s murder. In addition to the prison term, he was fined Rs400,000. He later challenged the conviction before the Lahore High Court, which has now ruled in his favor.

US accuses China’s Moonshot AI of stealing technology from American rival

The United States has accused Chinese artificial intelligence company Moonshot AI of illegally using technology from a leading American AI developer, escalating tensions between the world’s two largest technology powers. The allegations were made by White House Science and Technology adviser Michael Kratsios, who claimed the Chinese company copied the capabilities of a US model to develop its own advanced AI system. Kratsios said Moonshot AI used a technique known as distillation to build its recently unveiled Kimi K3 model. Distillation is a process in which a smaller or less advanced AI model repeatedly interacts with a more powerful model to learn from its responses and improve its own performance. While the technique has legitimate uses within companies that own both models, using it to copy another company’s proprietary system without permission could violate intellectual property rights. According to Kratsios, the US government has information indicating that Moonshot AI extracted capabilities from Anthropic’s AI technology during the development of Kimi K3. He also alleged that the company gained access to restricted Nvidia servers powered by the advanced GB300 Grace Blackwell computing platform, despite US export controls designed to limit China’s access to cutting edge semiconductor technology. Moonshot AI has not publicly responded to the accusations. The Chinese embassy in Washington, Anthropic, Nvidia, and the White House had also not issued detailed comments following the allegations. The claims come just days after Moonshot AI introduced Kimi K3, an advanced open source language model that attracted global attention for its strong performance. Many industry experts said the model significantly narrowed the gap between Chinese and American AI technology. Moonshot described Kimi K3 as being capable of competing with some of the most advanced AI systems developed in the United States. The allegations have intensified concerns within Washington over the protection of American technology. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said authorities are investigating whether Chinese AI companies have copied the capabilities of American competitors through large scale distillation efforts. He warned that sanctions remain an option if Chinese firms are found to have engaged in intellectual property theft. Bessent said the United States supports open source artificial intelligence because it encourages innovation and wider access to technology. However, he stressed that open source development does not give companies permission to copy protected American research or commercial products. The dispute comes at a sensitive time in US China relations. President Donald Trump is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in September as both countries continue negotiations on trade, technology, and security issues. Artificial intelligence has become one of the most important areas of competition between the two nations. The United States first imposed restrictions on exports of Nvidia’s most advanced AI chips to China in 2022 over concerns that the technology could strengthen China’s military capabilities. Since then, governments have increased efforts to prevent the illegal transfer and smuggling of high performance semiconductor chips into China. Moonshot AI plans to release Kimi K3 as an open source model on July 27, allowing developers around the world to download, modify, and build applications using the software. The planned release has generated significant interest because it would become one of the largest freely available AI models developed by a Chinese company. The latest accusations are not the first involving Anthropic. Earlier this year, the American AI company accused Chinese technology giant Alibaba of using similar distillation methods to copy the capabilities of its Claude AI models. Anthropic urged US lawmakers to strengthen legal protections for American AI technology and introduce tougher penalties for companies found to be stealing intellectual property. The White House has also announced broader measures to protect American innovation from foreign cyber and technology theft. Officials say the government is working more closely with leading AI companies to detect and prevent organised efforts aimed at copying proprietary research. As investigations continue, the allegations against Moonshot AI are expected to become another major issue in the growing technological rivalry between the United States and China.

Tom Holland aims to do all his own dancing in Fred…

Tom Holland is preparing for one of the most demanding roles of his career as he gets ready to portray legendary dancer and actor Fred Astaire in an upcoming biographical film. The Spider-Man star recently revealed that he has already returned to the dance studio and is undergoing intensive training to ensure he can perform every dance sequence himself. His goal is not only to honor Astaire’s extraordinary legacy but also to recreate the magic of his performances with complete authenticity.  Speaking during recent television interviews, Holland admitted that stepping into Astaire’s shoes is both thrilling and intimidating. He described his early rehearsals as filling him with “excitement and absolute dread,” acknowledging the immense challenge that comes with portraying one of Hollywood’s greatest dancers. Rather than relying on stunt doubles, Holland said he hopes to perform all of the dance routines himself and even film many of them in uninterrupted long takes—the same style that made Fred Astaire’s performances so iconic.  For Holland, the project is especially meaningful because it reconnects him with his roots. Before becoming an international film star, he trained extensively in dance and rose to fame as the lead in London’s West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical. However, after leaving the stage to focus on acting, he stepped away from professional dance training. The actor has now admitted that quitting dance was one of his biggest career regrets, making this film the perfect opportunity to rediscover a skill that first launched his career.  The untitled Fred Astaire biopic will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul King, known for the Paddington films, with a screenplay by Steven Levenson. Although the project was first announced several years ago, production is now expected to begin in January 2027 after Holland completes promotional commitments for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and other upcoming releases.  Holland has described the role as the beginning of a new chapter in his acting career. At 30, he believes it is time to move beyond youthful characters and embrace more challenging performances that test his abilities. Playing Fred Astaire, whose elegance, precision, and effortless style influenced generations of performers, represents exactly the kind of challenge he has been searching for.  Fans have praised Holland’s commitment to authenticity, noting that his background in dance gives him a unique advantage in bringing Astaire to life. If he succeeds in performing every routine without doubles, the film could become one of the most technically impressive dance biopics in recent years. As rehearsals continue, anticipation for the film is steadily growing. With months of intensive preparation ahead, Tom Holland appears determined to deliver a performance worthy of Fred Astaire’s remarkable legacy. His dedication, discipline, and passion for dance suggest audiences may soon witness one of the most ambitious performances of his career.
