Snapchat, LinkedIn step up fight against low-quality AI-generated content

Snapchat and LinkedIn have announced new measures to reduce the spread of low-quality artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content, commonly known as “AI slop,” as major technology companies work to improve the quality of online content and strengthen user confidence in their platforms. The latest initiatives highlight the growing efforts by social media companies to encourage authentic content while limiting the visibility of mass-produced AI material that often offers little value to users. Snapchat has introduced a major update to its Spotlight recommendation system, changing how AI-generated videos are promoted. Under the new policy, videos created entirely using artificial intelligence will no longer be eligible for recommendations in Spotlight. While users can still upload AI-generated content, Snapchat said its recommendation algorithm will now give priority to videos created primarily by real people. The company added that content enhanced using Snapchat’s own advanced AI tools can still qualify for recommendations, provided creators clearly disclose the use of AI through appropriate labels. By requiring transparency, Snapchat aims to ensure users can easily identify AI-assisted content while continuing to reward originality and creativity. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said the changes are designed to keep Spotlight focused on genuine creativity rather than automated content. According to the company, the number of unique Spotlight contributors has increased by 120% over the past year, reflecting growing participation from creators producing original videos. Snapchat believes the latest update will further encourage authentic storytelling and meaningful engagement across the platform. Meanwhile, professional networking platform LinkedIn has introduced a new reporting option that allows users to flag posts they believe resemble “AI slop.” The feature enables members to report low-quality AI-generated posts directly, helping the platform identify content that may not meet its quality standards. LinkedIn said posts reported under this category will automatically be removed from the reporting user’s feed. The reports will also help train the platform’s detection systems to better identify repetitive, spam-like AI content in the future. In addition, posts that receive repeated reports from multiple users may experience reduced visibility beyond the creator’s immediate professional network, limiting their overall reach. The Microsoft-owned platform has also decided to retire its AI-powered “Enhance Your Post” writing tool. In its place, LinkedIn is introducing a proofreading feature designed to help users correct grammar and improve clarity without significantly altering their personal writing style. The company said the change reflects its commitment to supporting authentic communication rather than encouraging AI-written posts. These updates are part of a wider movement across the technology industry to address concerns surrounding the rapid growth of AI-generated content. Several major platforms, including YouTube and Substack, have recently introduced stricter moderation policies and AI-detection tools to reduce the spread of repetitive, misleading, or low-quality material. The latest actions come as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into digital platforms and everyday online experiences. While millions of people now rely on AI tools for writing, creativity, and productivity, concerns continue to grow about the overwhelming amount of AI-generated content appearing across the internet. By introducing stricter content policies and new moderation tools, Snapchat and LinkedIn hope to strike a balance between embracing AI innovation and protecting the authenticity, quality, and trust that users expect from their platforms.

Julie Andrews confirms she will not return for ‘Princess Diaries 3’

“The Princess Diaries” remains one of the most beloved coming-of-age films of the century, but its long-awaited third instalment just lost one of its biggest stars. Dame Julie Andrews has confirmed she won’t be part of it. The 90-year-old actress played Queen Clarisse Renaldi opposite Anne Hathaway in the original films. She has now revealed she’ll be sitting out the upcoming sequel entirely. Speaking to Today, Andrews confirmed directly that she will not appear in the new instalment. She explained that the story appears to be taking a somewhat different direction this time around. She admitted she isn’t entirely sure how the filmmakers plan to handle that shift. According to her, the timing simply doesn’t work for her to be part of it anymore. Andrews said she believes the story now belongs to Princess Mia, Hathaway’s character, rather than her own. She framed the decision as a natural handoff, letting the franchise continue through its central character instead. Her comments have already sparked disappointment among longtime fans of the franchise. One user online said the script would need to be exceptional now, arguing the film has lost one of its strongest draws. For many, Andrews’ presence was a defining part of what made the earlier films so beloved. Fans had been hoping to see her return to the big screen after years away from major on-screen roles. Since stepping back from acting, Andrews has largely shifted toward voiceover work instead. Her absence from “The Princess Diaries 3” marks another sign of that ongoing transition away from live-action performances. While the news has left fans emotional, it also puts more attention on how the new film will carry the story forward. With Andrews stepping aside, all eyes are now on how the franchise reintroduces its world without one of its most iconic characters.

Babar Azam’s England Test return in doubt after hand injury

LEEDS: Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s participation in the opening Test against England has become uncertain after the star batter suffered a blow to his hand during a practice match against the PCC Select XI. Babar was batting on five in the 39th over when a delivery from fast bowler Manny Lumsden struck his hand. The right-hander immediately appeared uncomfortable and received treatment from the team’s medical staff before retiring hurt. The Pakistan Cricket Board later advised Babar to rest as a precaution, but a final decision on his availability for the first Test has not yet been made. The development comes at a crucial moment for Pakistan, with the three-match Test series against England scheduled to begin on Wednesday at Headingley. Babar had returned as Pakistan’s Test captain earlier this year and was selected to lead the side throughout the England tour. Babar’s possible absence would be a significant concern for Pakistan, particularly given his importance in the middle order and his leadership role. The team management is expected to take no risks with the experienced batter and will assess his condition before confirming the playing XI. Babar briefly took part in a training session at Headingley on Monday, offering some encouragement to Pakistan. However, his availability is expected to be assessed again after Tuesday’s practice session, when the medical team should have a clearer picture of his recovery. Meanwhile, Shan Masood has also resumed training in Leeds and could feature in the opening Test. Shan had been sidelined after fracturing a finger while batting during the first Test against the West Indies in Tarouba. Despite the injury, he returned to the crease in the second innings but was unable to bat in his regular position. Subsequent scans confirmed the fracture, ruling him out of the second Test. Pakistan will hope both senior batters are fit as they prepare for a demanding series in England. The first Test is scheduled for August 19-23 at Headingley, followed by matches at Lord’s and Edgbaston. With the opener only days away, Babar’s fitness has emerged as one of the biggest talking points around Pakistan’s preparations. The team will await medical clearance before deciding whether its captain is ready to take the field. Pakistan squad Babar Azam (c), Aamir Jamal, Ali Usman, Abdullah Shafique, Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Awais Zafar, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel* (subject to fitness), Shan Masood and Ubaid Shah.

Pakistan hails Hamas disarmament progress, under p…

Pakistan has welcomed recent progress under the Gaza Peace Plan, describing developments toward Hamas’ disarmament as a positive step that could help revive efforts for a lasting political solution and the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the mediation efforts of the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye after US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas. The announcement is viewed as a significant breakthrough in implementing the Gaza ceasefire framework, as the issue of Hamas’ weapons has remained one of the main obstacles since the truce was reached in October 2025. In a statement shared on social media, the prime minister said Pakistan supports the ongoing work of the Board of Peace and expressed hope that all commitments under the Gaza Peace Plan would now move toward practical implementation. He emphasized that sustained diplomatic efforts should lead to a credible, time-bound political process in line with United Nations resolutions, ultimately ensuring the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination through the establishment of an independent state. According to Hamas officials, a committee operating under the Board of Peace will supervise the storage of the group’s weapons as part of the agreed process. The organization has also urged mediators to ensure that Israel fulfills its obligations under the ceasefire, including the withdrawal of its forces from Gaza. Although the ceasefire has reduced large-scale fighting, violence has not completely stopped. Fresh Israeli strikes reportedly killed at least four Palestinians, including two children, highlighting the fragile security situation despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Egyptian media reported that Cairo is expected to host another meeting of the ceasefire mediators, including representatives from the United States, Qatar, and Türkiye, to discuss the next phase of the peace plan. Pakistan has consistently maintained its support for the Palestinian cause and continues to advocate for an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Islamabad, which has no diplomatic relations with Israel, has repeatedly urged the international community to work toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and adherence to international law.

    Jamaat-e-Islami announces 15-day protest against p…

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced a sit-in outside the Governor House in Sindh today against the government’s decision not to reduce the petroleum levy. The party has also prepared a 15-day schedule for the protest campaign. JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said an increase in petroleum product prices leads to higher costs across the country and puts additional pressure on ordinary citizens. He criticised what he described as an unequal tax system, saying the country’s elite class was not paying its fair share of taxes while poor people continued to struggle with rising expenses. Naeemur Rehman also alleged that privileged groups enjoyed various benefits without paying their due share, while taxes were not being properly collected from the incomes of owners of independent power producers (IPPs). Meanwhile, JI Karachi chief Munim Zafar said the government had already collected around Rs100 billion more than its targeted revenue from the petroleum levy. He accused the government of turning the petroleum levy into a major source of revenue after failing to achieve its broader tax collection targets. The JI has also announced a protest sit-in in Lahore against the petroleum levy. The demonstration will be held at Charing Cross on The Mall. The party has been demanding a reduction in the petroleum levy, arguing that lower fuel-related charges could help ease inflationary pressure on households and businesses. JI leaders said their protests would continue until the government addressed their concerns and provided relief to citizens facing rising living costs.

Tom Holland wants Peter Parker to stay a hero kids can look up to

Tom Holland believes playing Spider-Man comes with a responsibility that goes well beyond the movie theatre. The actor opened up about this at the Los Angeles premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, speaking to People about what the role means to him. Holland reflected on how many young fans grow up watching the franchise. He said the biggest responsibility that comes with making these films is ensuring kids always have someone worth looking up to. He was quick to clarify that this admiration is not meant for him personally, but for the character of Peter Parker himself. Holland spoke about his own connection to the character, admitting that he had looked up to Peter Parker long before he ever played him. He said the character has been a personal role model since childhood, and that feeling has only grown stronger since taking on the role. He added that he does not take this responsibility lightly, calling it something genuinely important to him. Holland is the third actor to bring Peter Parker to life on the big screen. He followed in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, both of whom played the iconic web-slinger before him. Each actor has brought a slightly different take to the role, but the character’s core values have remained largely the same across all three versions. Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially released in theatres worldwide on July 31, 2026, marking another chapter in Holland’s long run as the beloved superhero. The film arrives with high expectations from fans who have followed his journey as Peter Parker since his debut in the role years ago. For Holland, though, the appeal of the character clearly goes beyond box office numbers or franchise milestones. His comments suggest a deeper personal investment in what Spider-Man represents, especially for the younger audiences who watch these films and see a bit of themselves in Peter Parker’s journey. As the film makes its way to audiences everywhere, Holland’s reflections offer a glimpse into how seriously he takes the responsibility of playing one of pop culture’s most enduring and relatable superheroes.
