Ancient Roman shipwreck found off Sicily carrying hundreds of 2,000-year-old amphorae

Italian authorities have uncovered an ancient Roman merchant ship off the coast of Sicily, dating back to the 2nd or 1st Century BC.

The vessel was discovered lying 46 metres underwater roughly three nautical miles off Mazara del Vallo.

Measuring 21 metres long and 6 metres wide, the vessel’s cargo holds remain piled with hundreds of well-preserved amphorae, primarily Dressel 1A ceramic jars used during the late Roman Republic to transport commodities such as wine, olive oil, and grain.

Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the site as “one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years”.

Local fisherman and free-diver Giacomo De Mola first flagged the site after detecting an anomaly on his sonar scanner that resembled a massive reef or rock. Upon diving down to investigate, he encountered the intact cargo mound surrounded by marine life.

Following De Mola’s report, specialist divers from the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Carabinieri Art Squad), working alongside the Sicilian Region’s Superintendency of the Sea, were dispatched to survey and document the seabed.

Archaeologists also identified two lead anchor stocks alongside the vessel’s structure. Italian maritime authorities have implemented security measures to safeguard the wreckage from illicit looting while further documentation and cargo analysis take place.

Rs2.68bn loan default at Bank of Punjab raises rec…

An internal report has revealed that 268 borrowers have defaulted on loans worth more than Rs2.68 billion at the Bank of Punjab (BOP), raising questions about the recovery of outstanding loans at the province’s government-owned bank. According to the report, each of the 268 borrowers has outstanding liabilities exceeding Rs1 crore. The list reportedly includes individuals, firms and companies with significant loan defaults. Sources familiar with the matter claimed that some prominent political and business figures may also be included among the borrowers. However, the identities and details of the alleged defaulters have not been independently verified. The reported figures have renewed concerns over the bank’s loan recovery mechanisms and lending practices. Large loan defaults can affect a financial institution’s liquidity and its ability to extend credit to other customers, particularly when recovery remains delayed. The Bank of Punjab is a major government-owned financial institution in Punjab and conducts both commercial and government-related banking operations. The Punjab Provincial Cooperative Bank is another state-owned financial institution, but its activities are primarily focused on the cooperative sector. Banking experts have called for stronger monitoring of large loans, improved recovery mechanisms and greater transparency in lending by state-owned banks. They say timely recovery of defaulted loans is essential to protect public resources and maintain confidence in the banking system. The report has also raised questions about the circumstances under which the loans were approved and the steps taken by the bank to recover the outstanding amounts. The Bank of Punjab management has so far not issued an official statement confirming or rejecting the figures contained in the report. Further verification of the reported list, including the identities of the borrowers and the status of recovery proceedings, would be necessary before any individual or company can be held responsible for the alleged defaults.

K-P assembly rejects move to absorb Haripur, Abbot…

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has unanimously rejected any reported move to separate Haripur and Abbottabad from the province and place them under the administrative control of Islamabad, warning that any such attempt would undermine provincial autonomy and constitutional rights. The resolution was adopted during Friday’s session after Provincial Minister Akbar Ayub presented a strongly worded motion opposing any proposal by the federal government to alter the status of K-P districts, particularly Haripur and Abbottabad. The House declared that all districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are an integral part of the province and cannot be separated under any circumstances. It maintained that changing provincial boundaries for administrative, political or economic purposes, or to gain control over natural resources, would violate the constitutional rights of the province and its people. The resolution specifically highlighted K-P’s water resources, hydropower facilities, mineral wealth, forests and other natural assets, stating that these resources belong constitutionally to the province and its people. Any attempt, directly or indirectly, to take control of these resources was described as unacceptable. The provincial legislature called on the federal government to immediately drop any proposal concerning the separation of the districts and respect the existing constitutional, geographical and administrative status of K-P. The House also urged political parties, lawmakers, constitutional bodies, lawyers, civil society, young people and the media to maintain a united position in protecting the province’s territorial integrity, autonomy and public interests. During the same session, PPP lawmaker Mehr Sultana raised concerns over the lack of effective rules requiring doctors to prescribe medicines using generic names rather than specific brands. She also called for computerized prescriptions to become mandatory, pointing out that unclear handwritten prescriptions can create difficulties for patients and increase the risk of errors. She urged the provincial government to introduce legislation or regulations addressing both issues, with the aim of improving prescription practices and protecting patients.

Karachi seals 200 shops in Saddar over fire safety…

The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. According to officials, Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso submitted a report to Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi detailing enforcement measures taken against businesses found in violation of fire safety laws across the district. The report stated that the sealed shops are primarily located on the ground floor of Bilal Centre and Koh Noor Centre in Saddar. Authorities found that these commercial units failed to meet prescribed fire safety standards and were operating in conditions considered unsafe for customers and employees. The crackdown forms part of a broader campaign to improve compliance with fire prevention regulations in Karachi’s busy commercial districts. Officials have emphasized that ensuring public safety remains a top priority, particularly in crowded shopping centers where inadequate emergency measures can increase the risk of serious incidents. Following the inspection drive, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi directed all deputy commissioners in the city to strictly enforce fire safety regulations and take action against businesses that fail to comply with legal requirements. The directive aims to improve safety standards in markets, shopping centers, and commercial buildings throughout Karachi. Fire safety regulations typically require commercial establishments to maintain functioning fire extinguishers, emergency exits, alarm systems, and other protective measures designed to reduce the risk of fire-related accidents. Authorities have warned that businesses found violating these requirements may face sealing, fines, or additional legal action until the necessary safety measures are implemented. The latest enforcement drive reflects growing efforts by the city administration to strengthen public safety following concerns over fire hazards in commercial areas. Shop owners whose businesses have been sealed will be required to address the identified deficiencies and meet the prescribed safety standards before they can resume operations. Officials have indicated that inspections will continue across Karachi to ensure compliance with fire safety laws, with similar action expected against other businesses that fail to meet the required standards. The administration has urged commercial property owners and traders to fully implement fire safety measures to avoid penalties and help create a safer environment for workers and the public.

Japan PM Takaichi’s approval falls as inflation hits households

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is facing growing public dissatisfaction as rising prices and higher living costs begin to weaken support for her government. A nationwide poll published by the Yomiuri newspaper showed that approval for Takaichi’s administration fell sharply in July. The cabinet’s approval rating dropped to 57 per cent, compared with 69 per cent in June. It is the first time since Takaichi took office that support for her government has fallen below 60 per cent. The survey was conducted from July 24 to 26. It showed that public disapproval also increased significantly. The share of respondents who opposed the cabinet rose to 34 per cent, up from 21 per cent in the previous month. Inflation has emerged as the biggest concern for voters. About 71 per cent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of rising prices and living costs. That figure stood at 56 per cent in June. The findings indicate that economic pressure is increasingly affecting Takaichi’s political standing. Her government had previously enjoyed strong public support, but persistent price increases are creating fresh challenges. Takaichi is also facing criticism over her government’s expansionary fiscal and monetary policy approach. The policies have contributed to higher bond yields and pressure on the yen, which has fallen to levels not seen in several decades. The latest polling results could increase pressure on the government to provide immediate relief to households. While issues such as national security remain important, voters are increasingly focused on everyday expenses and their purchasing power. Takaichi now faces the challenge of demonstrating that her economic policies can control inflation while maintaining broader economic stability.

Shagufta Ejaz on reason for becoming a YouTuber

Shagufta Ejaz has been a constant presence in Pakistani television since the PTV era, building a career that has spanned decades and generations of audiences. From her earliest roles in the golden age of state television to her continued prominence in contemporary drama, she has remained one of the industry’s most beloved and respected figures. In recent years, however, she has added an entirely new dimension to her public presence, stepping into the world of digital content creation and building a YouTube channel that has resonated with fans for its warmth, authenticity and the glimpses it offers of her family life. Appearing as a guest on Star and Style, Shagufta Ejaz spoke about what prompted her to make that shift, and the answer was a family connection rather than a professional calculation. The inspiration behind her YouTube journey was her son-in-law, Ali Hamza Baloch, who was already an established daily vlogger before she started her own channel. Shagufta explained that watching him work gave her a firsthand look at what the medium was capable of. She saw how deeply his audience connected with him, how his viewers followed his daily life and felt genuinely close to him through the screen, and something about that connection appealed to her. It was the kind of relationship with an audience that felt personal and immediate in a way that drama, for all its reach, does not always allow. With his help, she launched her own channel, and the early days of the venture were a family effort in more ways than one. Her children stepped in to handle the editing at the beginning, helping her find her footing in a format that operates very differently from the structured, scripted world of television production. Over time, however, she took ownership of the process herself and now edits her own videos, a progression that reflects both her growing comfort with the medium and her characteristic commitment to doing things properly. The content she produces has found a genuine audience. Fans have responded warmly to the homely, unpolished quality of her videos, which feature her family, her daily life and the kind of natural, unguarded moments that would never make it into a drama production. For an actress who has spent her career embodying carefully crafted characters, the channel offers something entirely different: just Shagufta Ejaz, being herself. It is a quality that her audience clearly values, and one that speaks to why she has remained relevant across so many years and so many changes in the entertainment landscape. Whether she is performing a complex character on screen or talking to her camera at home, the authenticity that has always defined her work comes through in exactly the same way.
