Balochistan postpones launch of Sariab-Kuchlak Peo…

QUETTA: The Balochistan Transport Department has confirmed that the inauguration of the People’s Train service between Sariab and Kuchlak has been postponed.

Balochistan Transport Secretary Hayat Kakar said seven stations have been established along the 32-kilometre route between Sariab and Kuchlak to facilitate the new train service.

He said the inauguration was delayed because the specially prepared train coaches have not yet reached Quetta. The launch ceremony had been scheduled to take place at Quetta Railway Station on August 14.

According to Kakar, the coaches for the People’s Train have been prepared at the Carriage Factory in Islamabad. However, their arrival in Quetta has been delayed.

He said the provincial government, federal government and Pakistan Railways would consult each other before announcing a new date for the inauguration.

The Balochistan Transport Department said the People’s Train project has been completed at an estimated cost of Rs4 billion.

The new service is expected to improve public transport connectivity between Sariab and Kuchlak and provide an additional commuting option for residents along the route.

Financial institutions with significant exposure to the US banking system could face a difficult choice between maintaining business with Iran and protecting their access to American financial markets. For Tehran, the impact could be substantial. Restrictions on Chinese banks could make it harder for Iranian businesses to receive payments, settle international transactions and maintain oil revenues. Such measures could further isolate Iran from the global financial system and increase pressure on its already restricted economy. Washington has previously imposed sanctions on Chinese companies and entities accused of supporting Iran or facilitating transactions that the United States considers prohibited. However, major Chinese banks have so far largely avoided direct sanctions of the kind now being suggested. Targeting a major Chinese financial institution would represent a significant escalation. It could also add another layer of tension to an already complicated US-China economic relationship, particularly as both countries remain engaged in disputes over trade, technology and strategic competition. For now, the Trump administration has not announced sanctions against any major Chinese bank over dealings with Iran. The president’s remarks remain an indication rather than a formal policy announcement. Still, the message from Washington is clear: Chinese financial institutions involved in Iran-related trade could increasingly find themselves under scrutiny. The uncertainty is likely to be closely watched by oil traders, banks and governments across the region, as any major disruption to Iran-China financial channels could affect both Iranian oil exports and wider energy markets.

He claimed that many residents of Punjab continued to travel to Karachi for advanced medical treatment and better healthcare facilities.     The University of Okara (UO) commemorated Kashmir Exploitation Day on Wednesday by organizing a seminar and a solidarity walk to reaffirm unwavering support for the people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (OJK) in their struggle for the right to self-determination. The event was organized by the Directorate of Student Affairs and attended by a large number of faculty members, administrative staff, and students. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Okara, Prof. Dr. Sajjad Mubin, presided over the ceremony. Addressing the participants, Prof. Mubin highlighted the decades-long suffering of the Kashmiri people and called upon the international community to play its role in ensuring the implementation of the United Nations resolutions on Kashmir. “Kashmir is the lifeline of Pakistan and an issue that remains central to peace and stability in South Asia. The resilient people of Kashmir have made unprecedented sacrifices for their legitimate right to self-determination, and the global community must not remain a silent spectator to their plight,” he said. The VC also paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces for safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Our armed forces have rendered unparalleled sacrifices to make Pakistan impregnable. Their commitment to national security enables us to stand firmly with our Kashmiri brothers and sisters in their just struggle,” he added. Speaking on the occasion, the Registrar of the University of Okara, Jamil Asim, said that observing Kashmir Exploitation Day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to raise awareness about the humanitarian situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. “We stand in complete solidarity with the people of Kashmir and reaffirm our support for their internationally recognized right to determine their own future. Universities have an important role in educating the younger generation about issues of justice, peace, and human rights,” he remarked. The Pro VC, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Wajid, and the DSA, Dr. Shoaib Saleem, also addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of maintaining national unity and continuing moral, diplomatic, and political support for the Kashmiri people. A one-minute silence was observed to honor the sacrifices of the people of Kashmir and to express solidarity with those who have lost their lives during the prolonged conflict. The seminar concluded with a solidarity walk in which the participants carried placards and banners expressing support for the Kashmiri cause and reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the right of self-determination for the people of Kashmir.

    Electricity tariff may rise by Rs1.34 per unit

    ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face another increase in power tariffs as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) considers a quarterly adjustment that could raise electricity prices by Rs1.34 per unit each month for three months. NEPRA has reserved its decision on a request submitted by power distribution companies seeking to recover around Rs34 billion from consumers under the quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism. According to sources, the proposed adjustment could increase the electricity tariff by Rs1.34 per unit for each of the next three months. If approved, consumers would see the additional charge reflected in their monthly electricity bills during the applicable period. The distribution companies have sought the adjustment to recover costs incurred during the relevant quarter. NEPRA reviewed the request and heard the stakeholders’ positions before reserving its decision. Sources said the regulator will conduct a detailed assessment of the claims before issuing its final decision. The authority will determine the exact amount to be passed on to consumers after reviewing the companies’ financial data and adjustment claims. The final decision will clarify whether NEPRA approves the full requested amount and how the additional cost will affect electricity consumers.

    Delhi court gives Tahir Hussain life sentence

    A court in New Delhi on Friday sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Tahir Hussain to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Delhi riots. The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Parveen Singh after the court found Hussain guilty in the high-profile murder case linked to the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020. The court also awarded life imprisonment to four other convicts found guilty in the same case. All five were held responsible for the killing of Ankit Sharma, whose death became one of the most widely discussed incidents of the riots. According to the prosecution, Sharma was attacked and killed during the violence that broke out in northeast Delhi, where clashes between rival groups resulted in widespread destruction, loss of life and damage to public and private property. The 2020 Delhi riots lasted several days and claimed dozens of lives while leaving hundreds of people injured. The violence triggered multiple criminal investigations, with police registering several cases against individuals accused of involvement in killings, arson and rioting. Tahir Hussain was elected as a municipal councillor from northeast Delhi on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket in 2017. He was considered a prominent local political figure before the riots. Following his arrest in connection with multiple cases related to the 2020 violence, the Aam Aadmi Party suspended him from the party. Since then, Hussain has remained at the centre of several legal proceedings arising from the riots. Friday’s judgment marks a significant development in one of the most prominent cases linked to the 2020 Delhi violence. The court concluded that Hussain and the four co-convicts were responsible for the murder of IB officer Ankit Sharma and imposed life imprisonment as punishment.
