ECC approves Rs4.188bn PASSCO compensation package

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved a Rs4.188 billion compensation package for employees of the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO).

The decision is part of the government’s plan to wind up PASSCO. The process is also linked to the disposal of the corporation’s wheat stocks. The government has set December 2026 as the deadline for completing the process.

The ECC directed that the winding-up process must be independently reviewed. A third party will validate the process to ensure transparency and compliance with the approved plan.

The committee also stressed the need to dispose of PASSCO’s wheat stocks as soon as possible. Officials said the early disposal of the stocks would help implement the employee compensation package on time.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research assured the ECC that the process would be completed by December.

The government began work on the closure of PASSCO in 2025. The Prime Minister’s Office had directed the finance minister to oversee the process in consultation with the relevant ministry.

A meeting chaired by the finance minister later decided that a severance package should be prepared for PASSCO employees. The package was designed along the lines of the voluntary separation scheme approved for employees of the Utility Stores Corporation.

PASSCO’s Board of Directors subsequently approved the revised compensation package. The scheme covers regular employees as well as contractual and daily-wage workers.

It includes severance compensation and several terminal benefits. These include leave encashment and a farewell grant. The package also provides maintenance support for widows and retired employees through PASSCO’s Benevolent Fund.

The ECC had previously approved the winding up of PASSCO. It also approved the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle called the Wheat Stock Management Company (WSMC) Public Limited. The federal cabinet later ratified the decision.

The total cost of the employee package is estimated at Rs4.188 billion. Around Rs3.967 billion has been allocated for severance compensation and terminal benefits for PASSCO employees.

Another Rs221 million has been set aside for maintenance grants. The amount will benefit 38 widows and 236 retired employees.

PTI may return to Senate committees after meeting …

Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas has said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) could return to parliamentary standing committees if a meeting is arranged with the party’s founder, Imran Khan. Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, Raja Nasir Abbas said that if the government wanted Parliament to continue functioning, it should facilitate a meeting between PTI leaders and Imran Khan. He alleged that deliberate ambiguity was being created about Imran Khan’s health, saying the situation was also aimed at creating divisions within the party. Raja Nasir Abbas recalled that before the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, a meeting with Imran Khan had taken place on the orders of the court. He said his party wanted a government that genuinely represented the people. Commenting on Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s remarks about a possible collapse of the system, he said he agreed with the assessment. He added that the problem identified by Naqvi was real, but the proposed “medicine” to address it was illegal. The Senate opposition leader also claimed that he knew why negotiations between the government and PTI had failed. He said a complete plan for negotiations had been taken to Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, adding that the opposition had held a meeting at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House before approaching the PTI founder. “We took several proposals to the founder,” he said, explaining that they did not want to visit the Prime Minister’s House and provide legal legitimacy to the government’s position. He said the same principle was behind their decision not to hold negotiations in the Speaker’s Office, as they did not recognise the arrangements as legally legitimate. Raja Nasir Abbas stressed that he distinguished between Imran Khan and the PTI as a political party, adding that he would stand by the former prime minister “until the last moment.” He reiterated that PTI could return to the standing committees if a meeting with Imran Khan was arranged. “If the government is serious about negotiations, it should come forward and talk,” he said, adding that the opposition was ready to hold talks in the Constitution Room of Parliament House.

Misha Japanwala brings Pakistani artistry to The Odyssey

Pakistani artist and fashion designer Misha Japanwala has achieved a major international milestone, collaborating with the creative team behind director Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster epic The Odyssey to design two custom sculptural pieces worn by Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. In Nolan’s cinematic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, Nyong’o portrays the iconic role of Helen of Troy—mythology’s “face that launched a thousand ships.” The collaboration came about directly through Nyong’o, who previously wore a custom breastplate designed by Japanwala to the 2023 Tony Awards and personally recommended the Pakistani designer to the film’s Oscar-nominated costume designer, Ellen Mirojnick. Speaking about the creative process, Mirojnick explained that capturing the essence of Helen of Troy required balancing an enigmatic, regal presence with the film’s grounded realism. To achieve this look, Japanwala created an asymmetrical neck and shoulder plate crafted in bronze, designed to resemble a sculpted piece of classical statuary. Nyong’o wears the metallic structure as a capelet layered over a draped gown during a pivotal scene where Helen hosts Telemachus (played by Tom Holland) in Sparta. For Helen’s final scene in the film, Japanwala designed a second piece: a gleaming bronze choker paired with a heavy chainmail caftan-gown. Taking to social media to celebrate the announcement, Japanwala expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to contribute her signature body-casting artistry to a monumental cinematic production: ”The Odyssey — the honor of a lifetime to contribute to Christopher Nolan’s vision and work with the legend Ellen Mirojnick and Sara O’Donnell to create these two very special sculptural works that adorn Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy! Thank you Lupita for championing my work, and to the costume designers for trusting me to bring these pieces to life. A dream come true to be a tiny part of this monumental film and cinematic history.” This high-profile Hollywood feature marks the latest international success for Japanwala, whose wearable sculptures and body castings reject conventional beauty standards by celebrating organic forms, scarring, and individuality. The Parsons School of Design graduate previously gained global attention for creating custom metallic body pieces for international celebrities, including rapper Cardi B’s viral pregnancy reveal and supermodel Gigi Hadid. With The Odyssey dominating global box offices, Japanwala’s striking designs represent a proud moment for contemporary Pakistani artistry, showcasing homegrown creative talent on one of cinema’s biggest stages.

Could Lionel Messi be Argentina’s next President…

BUENOS AIRES: Football icon Lionel Messi has become the subject of an unexpected political prediction after a Chinese academic claimed the Argentine superstar could become the country’s president within the next five years, a suggestion that has quickly gone viral across social media. The prediction was made by Chinese analyst and academic Jiang Xueqin during an interview on controversial online content creator Sneako’s Kick streaming platform. During the discussion, Jiang argued that Messi’s immense popularity could propel him into Argentina’s highest political office if he ever decided to enter public life. According to Jiang, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner would not only win a presidential election comfortably but could also remain in office for as long as two decades because of the extraordinary public affection he enjoys. “He is so admired that people would continue to support him even if he made mistakes,” Jiang suggested during the interview, a remark that quickly drew mixed reactions from football fans and political observers alike. The prediction comes at a time when Messi continues to cement his legendary status in world football. At the age of 39, he recently captained Argentina to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final, extending one of the most remarkable international careers in football history. Although Argentina fell to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, Messi’s performances throughout the tournament once again earned widespread praise. Many supporters believe his influence on Argentine football remains unmatched, despite the disappointing result in the championship match. The speculation has fueled lively discussions online, with some fans embracing the idea as an interesting possibility while others dismissed it as little more than a fanciful prediction. Social media platforms have been flooded with humorous posts imagining Messi exchanging football boots for political office. However, there is currently no indication that Messi intends to enter politics. The football legend has never announced plans to run for public office or participate in Argentina’s presidential elections. Political analysts also caution against treating the prediction as anything more than personal opinion. Jiang’s remarks have not been independently verified and do not reflect any official political development involving the Argentine captain. Messi has largely kept his public image focused on football, charity work and family life throughout his career, rarely commenting on domestic politics. While the idea of the World Cup-winning captain one day leading Argentina has captured public imagination, it remains entirely speculative. For now, Messi’s future continues to be linked with football rather than politics, leaving fans to debate whether the viral prediction is pure fantasy or an intriguing “what if” scenario.
