Pichet Kunadhamraks, director-general of the Department of Rail Transport, announced the findings on Sunday evening, stating that police reported Sayomporn Suankul, the 46-year-old operator of freight train number 2126 traveling from Laem Chabang Port to Bang Sue, underwent a urine test that returned positive for substance abuse. Additionally, Mr. Pichet confirmed that Mr. Sayomporn did not possess a valid train operator’s license issued by the Department of Rail Transport at the time of the incident.

In response to these revelations, Mr. Pichet has ordered mandatory alcohol and drug screening for all department employees involved in train operations. He has also demanded a comprehensive investigation into the railway supervisors who permitted Mr. Sayomporn to operate the train involved in the deadly collision on Asok-Din Daeng Road in Huai Khwang district on Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Sayomporn has been suspended from duty and faces disciplinary proceedings for serious violations, in addition to criminal charges related to the incident. The Department of Rail Transport has indicated that any personnel found to have facilitated the operation of an unlicensed driver will also face appropriate administrative and legal consequences.

Bangkok Police Chief Police Lieutenant General Sayam Boonsom confirmed that the train driver has been formally charged with reckless driving causing death and serious injury. The driver of the passenger bus that stopped on the level crossing at the time of the collision faces identical charges as investigators examine the circumstances that led both vehicles to occupy the crossing simultaneously.

The collision resulted in eight fatalities and approximately 30 injuries, according to official reports. Emergency responders from multiple agencies worked at the scene to extinguish fires sparked by the impact, extract trapped passengers, and transport victims to nearby medical facilities.

According to Police Lieutenant General Sayam, the freight train did not reduce speed or attempt to stop despite warnings from a local level-crossing official who displayed a red flag signal instructing the driver to halt due to road traffic congestion ahead. The new agreement is viewed as an attempt to bring these existing relationships under a formal trilateral framework. Analysts say conflicts, changing military technologies and emerging security threats have encouraged countries with shared strategic interests to strengthen their defence coordination.     Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched Vision Pakistan 2047, a long-term national development framework focused on economic growth, youth empowerment, employment, education, technology and sustainable development. He urged students to prepare themselves to play a leading role in the country’s future development. Youth development is a major component of Vision Pakistan 2047. The government plans to expand opportunities in education, employment, entrepreneurship and technology so that young people can acquire skills required by the modern economy. The prime minister also announced Pakistan’s first national youth employment policy. Under the policy, women will have a 35 per cent share in the labour force, while 10 per cent of the allocation will be reserved for startups. The initiative aims not only to help young people find jobs but also encourage them to establish businesses and create employment for others. Shehbaz stressed that equal access to quality education was essential for building the welfare state envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam. He said talented children from villages and less-developed areas should receive opportunities comparable to those available to students from privileged backgrounds. The government plans to expand the Danish Schools network to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan. The initiative is intended to provide quality education to deserving students without financial barriers. A Danish University is also being established in Islamabad, with classes expected to begin next year. The institution will focus on modern education and emerging disciplines. The prime minister said Pakistan must increase its focus on information technology, artificial intelligence and technical education to remain competitive globally. He said 1,000 students had already been sent to China for training in agricultural technology, while high-achieving students would receive opportunities for IT and AI education. The government has also distributed around 700,000 laptops among deserving students. Another 250,000 laptops are expected to be provided to high-achieving students this year. Vision Pakistan 2047 will be aligned with the government’s Uraan Pakistan programme. Ministries and relevant institutions have been directed to set long-term targets covering economic transformation, human capital, technology, innovation, governance and sustainable development. The broader objective is to create a competitive and inclusive economy and move Pakistan towards a trillion-dollar economic target while improving living standards and expanding opportunities for its young population. Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan also addressed the gathering. He said the government was working continuously to create opportunities for young people and praised Shehbaz Sharif for initiatives taken for youth development.

    Students protest Cambridge exam leaks

    ISLAMABAD: Accountability4Cambridge has called for a student protest against Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) over alleged examination paper leaks during the 2026 examination cycle, saying the incidents have raised serious concerns about fairness and the credibility of Cambridge examinations. The student group said reports of leaked papers emerged in 2024 and increased in 2025, but Cambridge failed to provide sufficient public explanations or demonstrate that it had effectively strengthened its examination security system. According to Accountability4Cambridge, leaked material from several major papers circulated before scheduled examination times in 2026. The group compiled evidence from 17 alleged cases, including screen recordings showing time-zone information that it says established that the material was available before the relevant examinations. Cambridge recognised four cases and took action, but the students say the remaining evidence was not adequately addressed. The group raised the issue before the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training on May 18 and again on June 16. Following the meetings, a sub-committee comprising IBCC, Cambridge, Accountability4Cambridge, the British Council, the Ministry of Education and NCCIA was formed. During a July 13 meeting, the students presented the 17 recordings and asked Cambridge to respond. After Cambridge questioned the reliability of the videos, Accountability4Cambridge sought forensic verification from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). The group said NCCIA’s report, received on July 29, found no evidence of tampering in the submitted recordings. Accountability4Cambridge subsequently requested another sub-committee meeting to present the forensic findings. The meeting was initially scheduled for August 7 but was postponed to August 12 after Cambridge said it was unavailable. The students have also criticised Cambridge’s decision to use S1 paper marks instead of assessed marks. They argue that using compromised papers for grading could unfairly benefit students who accessed leaked material while disadvantaging those who did not. Accountability4Cambridge is demanding reversal of the S1 marking decision, lower grade thresholds for Computer Science and Mathematics, recognition of additional leaks supported by forensic evidence, publication of a detailed investigation report and a transparent mechanism for handling compromised examinations. The group has also urged schools to demand greater accountability from Cambridge. Founder Samaak Iqbal Malik said the dispute concerns the integrity of the entire examination system rather than a few individual papers. The organisation has announced a student demonstration outside the IBCC office in G-10, Islamabad, at 1pm on Wednesday, August 12, calling for immediate action before the controversy further affects students’ academic futures.
