Lahore building collapse kills 10, several critica…

At least 10 people lost their lives and several others were injured after a three-storey residential building collapsed in Lahore’s Baghbanpura area late Wednesday night, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene shortly after the incident and recovered 16 people from beneath the debris. Six victims were pronounced dead at the site, while the remaining injured were shifted to nearby hospitals. Four more later died from their injuries, raising the death toll to 10.

Rescue officials said four people remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment, while two injured victims have been discharged after medical care. Search teams continued clearing the rubble to ensure no one remained trapped.

According to preliminary findings, the roof of the ageing building collapsed at around 10:15pm, causing the entire structure to cave in. Members of an extended family living on different floors were inside the building when the collapse occurred.

Police and rescue workers immediately launched a coordinated operation, using heavy machinery and manual equipment to search for survivors. Authorities said the exact number of people inside the building at the time of the collapse is still being determined.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed senior officials to monitor the rescue and relief efforts. The city commissioner visited both the accident site and the hospital to review the situation and meet the injured survivors.

Local lawmakers also visited the area and assured affected families that all possible assistance would be provided during the rescue operation and rehabilitation process.

The latest tragedy has renewed concerns over the safety of old and deteriorating buildings in Lahore. It comes only weeks after a deadly roof collapse at a private tuition centre in Kahna claimed the lives of 14 children. Following that incident, provincial authorities had ordered safety inspections of educational institutions and other ageing structures.

Flood alert in Pakistan as India opens Salal dam g…

Pakistan has issued a high-level flood alert after India released a significant volume of water from the Salal Dam following heavy rainfall in Indian-administered Kashmir. The move has raised concerns among Pakistani authorities, who are closely monitoring the situation as water levels continue to rise in the Chenab River. According to Punjab’s Irrigation Department, the heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas prompted Indian authorities to open all gates of the Salal Dam, allowing a large flow of water to move downstream toward Pakistan. Officials have warned that the increased water discharge could reach Wazirabad within the next 48 hours, prompting precautionary measures in vulnerable areas. The Irrigation Department stated that water levels in the Chenab River have already begun to increase. Authorities are continuously tracking river flows to assess the potential impact on downstream districts and to provide timely updates if the situation changes. As a precaution, a high alert has been issued for flood-prone areas, particularly in Sialkot and Wazirabad, where local administrations have been instructed to remain prepared for any emergency. Disaster management teams are coordinating with relevant departments to monitor developments and ensure a rapid response if water levels continue to rise. Officials have urged residents living near the Chenab River and low-lying areas to stay informed through official announcements and avoid unnecessary travel near riverbanks. Emergency services are also on standby to respond quickly should flooding occur. Seasonal monsoon rains often lead to rising river levels across the region, making cross-border water management a critical issue during this period. Sudden increases in water discharge from upstream reservoirs can significantly affect downstream communities, requiring close coordination between authorities and continuous monitoring of river conditions. While officials have expressed concern over the rising water levels, they are also emphasizing that the situation remains under observation. The extent of any flooding will depend on rainfall patterns over the coming days and the volume of water continuing to flow into the Chenab River. Residents in at-risk areas are advised to follow guidance issued by local authorities, remain alert for weather and flood updates, and take necessary precautions if evacuation advisories are issued. Authorities have assured the public that monitoring efforts will continue around the clock to minimize risks and protect communities from any potential flooding. With the water surge expected to arrive within the next two days, emergency agencies remain on alert as Pakistan prepares for the possible impact of increased river flows during the ongoing monsoon season.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man shatters box office with $927m opening

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered one of the biggest box office debuts in cinema history, earning an impressive $927 million worldwide during its opening weekend and cementing its place as one of Marvel’s most successful launches. The superhero blockbuster collected $355 million across the United States and Canada, making it the second-largest domestic opening weekend of all time, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, which earned $357 million during its debut in 2019, without adjusting for inflation. International audiences also turned out in huge numbers, helping the film earn $572 million overseas. China led all international markets with $121 million in ticket sales, while Australia recorded the country’s biggest opening weekend of 2026 with $30.4 million. Combined, those figures lifted the movie’s global opening weekend total to $927 million. The latest installment marks Tom Holland’s fourth appearance as Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man. The story follows Parker after the events that left the world with no memory of his superhero identity. Forced to navigate life in isolation, he continues fighting crime while searching for meaningful human connections and struggling with loneliness. Zendaya reprises her role as MJ, Parker’s greatest love, while the film explores themes of friendship, emotional resilience, and hope. The emotional storytelling has been widely praised for adding depth to the superhero spectacle and connecting with audiences beyond its action sequences. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the film’s opening weekend as a remarkable achievement, celebrating the overwhelming response from audiences around the world. The success also strengthens Marvel Studios’ dominance at the global box office. The studio now holds the four biggest worldwide opening weekends in history, led by Avengers: Endgame with $1.22 billion, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day with $927 million, Avengers: Infinity War with $640 million, and Spider-Man: No Way Home with $600 million. Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman said the film’s emotional focus on friendship and human connection has resonated with audiences of every generation and across different cultures, contributing to its extraordinary commercial success. Despite growing concerns in recent years about superhero fatigue, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has received an overwhelmingly positive reception. The movie currently holds a 90% critics’ score and an impressive 98% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting strong support from both reviewers and moviegoers. Entertainment analysts believe the film’s exploration of loneliness, friendship, and overcoming personal struggles has struck a chord with Generation Z, particularly younger audiences seeking relatable emotional stories alongside blockbuster action. The film’s blockbuster performance has also boosted an already strong summer movie season, joining successful releases such as Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey in driving audiences back to cinemas. Industry experts say the combined success of these films produced one of the biggest weekends ever for movie theaters. Although the domestic box office has continued to recover, overall ticket sales in 2026 remain below pre-pandemic levels. However, the exceptional performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has provided another major boost for theaters and demonstrated that major franchise releases continue to attract massive global audiences.

Meghan Markle’s ring-free appearance sparks ‘deliberate message’ claim

Meghan Markle has reportedly sent a subtle but pointed message to husband Prince Harry through a calculated public appearance. Royal insiders claim the gesture was far from accidental. Sources told Closer that Meghan wanted to remind Harry she remains the same independent, self-assured woman he originally fell for. The message, they suggest, came through a solo public outing. Meghan recently made a solo appearance at a screening for “Cookie Queens,” a documentary about the Girl Scouts on which she serves as executive producer. Eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed one key detail from the event. She was not wearing her engagement ring during the appearance. According to insiders, that absence was not accidental at all. A close source explained that Meghan is far too media-savvy to step out without her ring by mistake. They suggested the move was designed to send a clear signal, both publicly and to Harry directly. The insider described it as a reminder that Meghan remains the driven, independent woman Harry originally fell in love with. They added that anyone choosing to take her for granted would do so at their own risk. This latest development adds to ongoing speculation about how separately Harry and Meghan have been living their day-to-day lives. Sources claim the couple’s schedules have grown increasingly divided in recent months. According to the source, Meghan has been taking frequent meetings in Los Angeles while handling much of the negotiation work tied to their Netflix deal. Harry, meanwhile, is said to be focused on his charitable work and repairing his relationship with his father. The insider suggested Meghan has taken on a larger share of responsibility for bringing in income for the family. Despite their busy, separate schedules, the source said the couple still comes together for meals and family time. Even so, the source acknowledged that their days often pass quickly, with each of them pulled in different directions. The latest appearance has only added fuel to ongoing speculation about the dynamics within their marriage.
