Netanyahu says social media is driving decline in US support for Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has acknowledged that public support for Israel has declined in the United States, attributing the shift largely to the influence of social media and online misinformation. His remarks came during an interview with ABC News, where he also discussed the war in Gaza, Iran’s nuclear programme, and Israel’s relationship with the United States.

Netanyahu admitted that attitudes toward Israel among Americans have changed in recent years and said the trend was a matter of concern. He argued that the rapid growth of social media platforms, along with the use of coordinated online campaigns and automated accounts, has shaped public opinion against Israel. According to him, misleading portrayals of the conflict in Gaza have contributed significantly to the fall in support.

Recent surveys suggest that American views of Israel have become increasingly critical. A July poll by the Pew Research Center found that unfavorable opinions of the Israeli people have risen compared with previous years, while support for the Israeli government has also declined. The findings reflect growing concern among Americans over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the humanitarian impact of the conflict.

During the interview, Netanyahu said he wanted Israel to continue receiving support from both major political parties in the United States. He described bipartisan backing as an important part of Israel’s national security and argued that the debate surrounding Israel extends beyond the Middle East. He claimed that those who oppose Israel often also oppose American interests and values.

The Israeli leader also discussed Iran, saying Israel and US President Donald Trump share the same objective of preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. He said Israel would support any approach that successfully ends Iran’s nuclear programme, whether through diplomacy, economic sanctions, or military action. However, he stressed that decisions regarding American policy ultimately rest with the US president.

Netanyahu accused Iran of repeatedly acting in bad faith during previous negotiations, claiming its leaders have used talks to delay action while continuing their nuclear ambitions. Iran has previously rejected such accusations and argued that inconsistent policies and broken commitments by the United States have undermined diplomatic efforts.

He also warned Iran against carrying out any future attacks on Israel, saying such actions would be met with a strong military response. Although he believes Iran’s leadership has become weaker in recent years, Netanyahu said the current government remains in power and predicted that it could eventually collapse.

Addressing his relationship with President Trump, Netanyahu dismissed suggestions that either leader was directing the other. He described the two countries as close allies and said the United States remains the senior partner while Israel continues to work closely with Washington on security matters.

The prime minister also rejected reports claiming he had underestimated the consequences or duration of military action against Iran. He insisted those reports misrepresented his earlier assessments and said President Trump independently viewed Iran’s nuclear ambitions as a serious threat.

Netanyahu strongly denied allegations that Israel had committed war crimes or genocide during its military campaign in Gaza. He argued that Israeli forces had taken steps to reduce civilian casualties by issuing warnings through phone calls, text messages, and leaflets urging people to leave areas of fighting. He also accused Hamas of preventing civilians from evacuating.

The Israeli leader again ruled out the creation of an independent Palestinian state, arguing that it would pose a security threat to Israel. His comments come despite ongoing international calls for a two state solution.

The conflict remains under intense international scrutiny. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the Gaza conflict. Israel rejects the accusations, while military operations in the territory have continued despite a ceasefire agreement reached in October 2025.

Oil prices climb amid US-Iran tensions as markets brace for supply risks

LONDON: Global oil prices moved higher on Friday and were set to post strong weekly gains as investors closely monitored escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, raising fears of potential disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East. Brent crude futures advanced by 1.45%, reaching $88.33 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 1.26% to $82.27 a barrel. The gains came as diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional conflict showed little progress, increasing uncertainty in global energy markets. Market participants remained focused on reports that Washington could intensify economic pressure on Tehran, including the possibility of expanding maritime restrictions and tightening sanctions. Analysts said any further deterioration in relations between the two countries could have a significant impact on global crude exports, particularly given the Middle East’s critical role in oil production. Energy analysts noted that concerns over supply interruptions have become a key driver of recent price movements. While no major disruption has yet occurred, traders are pricing in the risk that a broader conflict could affect shipping routes and regional oil infrastructure. “Geopolitical developments continue to dominate market sentiment,” analysts said, adding that a major escalation could trigger a sharper increase in oil prices and add to inflationary pressures worldwide. Meanwhile, economic data from the United States added another dimension to market activity. A survey released on Friday indicated that consumer sentiment weakened in early August as households faced higher living costs, partly linked to rising energy prices and global uncertainty. US retail sales data also came in weaker than expected, leading investors to scale back expectations of another interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve next month. The softer economic outlook pushed the US dollar lower and reduced Treasury yields, offering support to commodities priced in dollars, including gold and oil. Spot gold prices climbed 0.69% to $4,380.03 per ounce, while US gold futures settled 0.4% higher at $4,437.30 an ounce as investors sought safe-haven assets amid geopolitical concerns. In currency markets, the Japanese yen strengthened slightly against the US dollar, trading near 159.37 per dollar. The movement followed reports that the Bank of Japan may consider raising interest rates as early as September. However, traders continued to watch the key 160-yen level, which could prompt intervention by Japanese authorities. Global equity markets showed mixed performance. On Wall Street, technology stocks weighed on major indexes after recent gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 73.41 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also closed lower. Despite Friday’s decline, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq remained on course for a third consecutive weekly gain. European markets also ended lower, snapping a four-week winning streak as rising oil prices and geopolitical risks overshadowed generally positive corporate earnings. MSCI’s global equity index edged down 0.09%, reflecting cautious investor sentiment, while Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan recorded modest gains. Market strategists said investors are increasingly balancing optimism over corporate earnings and expectations of easier monetary policy against uncertainty surrounding international conflicts. John Sidawi, Senior Portfolio Manager at Federated Hermes, observed that financial markets have recently shown resilience despite geopolitical shocks, but warned that this calm may not last indefinitely. He noted that either a significant escalation in conflict or a clear diplomatic breakthrough could lead to a much stronger market reaction than current asset prices suggest.

She recalled watching him thank the audience after winning and asking viewers to continue supporting him so that he could eventually take the Tamasha trophy home. Blake Lively reacts to tragic deaths of Hayden Pan…

Blake Lively has shared a heartfelt message following the tragic death of Hayden Panettiere, while also remembering her late friend and former co-star Michelle Trachtenberg. The actress used the emotional moment to encourage people to show more kindness and compassion toward one another. Lively shared a video on her Instagram Stories featuring scenes from the 2005 Disney movie Ice Princess. The film starred both Panettiere and Trachtenberg, who played rivals before their characters ultimately became friends. Lively appeared alongside both actresses in the movie, making the footage an especially meaningful reminder of their connection.  Alongside the video, Lively expressed gratitude for the joy the two women had brought to audiences. She also urged her followers to “be kind,” highlighting the importance of remembering that people may be dealing with private struggles that others cannot see.  Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. The actress was known for major roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise. Her family described her as a “force of nature” who brought immense love and joy to those around her.  Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and former co-stars. Connie Britton, Viola Davis, Selma Blair and several other stars have shared memories of Panettiere, remembering her talent, warmth and determination.  For Lively, the loss also carried echoes of another heartbreaking Hollywood tragedy. Michelle Trachtenberg, who worked with Lively on Gossip Girl, died in February 2025 at the age of 39. Lively previously paid tribute to Trachtenberg, describing her as a deeply kind and fiercely loyal person whose presence could immediately change the energy in a room.  Trachtenberg’s death was later determined to have resulted from complications of diabetes. Her message comes at a difficult time for Panettiere’s loved ones and fans. The actress had recently opened up about her life and struggles in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, giving audiences a more personal understanding of the experiences behind her public image.  Lively’s tribute ultimately focused less on celebrity and more on humanity. Her call for kindness serves as a reminder that compassion can matter deeply, especially when someone’s private struggles are not visible to the outside world.

Italy’s fourth summer heat wave peaks as rec…

Italy’s fourth heat wave of the summer reached its most intense point on Monday, with a record 25 cities placed under red heat alerts as temperatures climbed above 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the country, according to local media reports. Italy’s Health Ministry raised the number of cities under its highest heat risk warning from 23 on Sunday to 25 on Monday, marking the highest total recorded so far this summer. Only Reggio Calabria and Messina avoided the red alert designation, though both remained under yellow level warnings. The Po Valley and central regions of the country are experiencing the harshest conditions, while inland areas and Sardinia could also see temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius. In parts of central and northern Italy, overnight temperatures are expected to stay above 25 degrees Celsius, a pattern meteorologists have described as super tropical nights. The central province of Terni recorded a temperature of 41 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Experts have linked the extreme heat to a persistent African anticyclone combined with continued warming of the Mediterranean Sea, where surface temperatures have reached or surpassed 30 degrees Celsius across much of the basin. Meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici of iLMeteo.it said the accumulated heat is expected to fuel atmospheric instability, warning of strong afternoon thunderstorms forming over the Alps and Apennines. Italy’s Civil Protection Department has issued yellow alerts for heavy rainfall along the Apennine mountain range stretching from Umbria to Calabria, as well as in inland areas of Sicily. Tedici said a genuine shift away from the hottest phase of summer 2026 is unlikely before at least mid August. Authorities have also flagged an elevated risk of wildfires, placing Sicily and Emilia Romagna under orange alerts as the heat wave continues to grip the country. The extreme temperatures fit a broader pattern of intensifying summer heat across southern Europe in recent years, as scientists have repeatedly linked rising Mediterranean sea temperatures and more frequent heat waves to long term climate trends affecting the region’s weather systems.
