Manuel Neuer signals likely retirement at season’s end

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has said it is “very likely” he will retire at the conclusion of the upcoming campaign, bringing an end to a career that has defined modern goalkeeping.

Speaking at Bayern’s training camp in southern Bavaria, the 40‑year‑old confirmed that his one‑year contract extension signed in May would almost certainly be his last. “It certainly looks very likely I’m going to retire,” Neuer told reporters, adding that the strength of the current squad convinced him to play one more season.

Neuer has battled recurring muscle injuries but remains a key figure for Bayern, who won the Bundesliga and German Cup double last season before falling to Paris Saint‑Germain in the Champions League semi‑finals. He missed the German Cup final against Stuttgart, with Jonas Urbig deputising in goal.

The 2014 World Cup winner retired from international football after Euro 2024 but briefly returned for the most recent World Cup, where Germany exited in the last 32 against Paraguay.

Since joining Bayern from Schalke in 2011, Neuer has collected 13 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups and two Champions League crowns. Despite hinting at retirement, he insisted the coming season would not be treated as a farewell tour. “I’m not playing these matches just to say, ‘This is my last game,’” he said.

    Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman criticizes Pakistan’s…

Renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman has strongly criticized Pakistan’s judicial and economic systems, stating that a justice system that fails to deliver justice even after forty years cannot be considered a true system of justice but rather a system of oppression. He made these remarks while addressing a public ceremony in Karachi, where he spoke about the country’s pressing legal and economic challenges. During his speech, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman expressed concern over the prolonged delays in the judicial process. He argued that when people have to wait decades for justice, the very purpose of the legal system is defeated. According to him, justice delayed for such an extended period effectively becomes justice denied, leaving citizens frustrated and deprived of their fundamental rights. He emphasized that a judicial system should provide timely and fair decisions so that public confidence in the rule of law remains intact. The scholar also urged those in positions of authority to focus on resolving Pakistan’s domestic problems instead of concentrating solely on international issues. He remarked that while government leaders often discuss and engage with global affairs, the country’s internal challenges require immediate attention. He specifically called upon policymakers and those holding power to prioritize the welfare of the people by addressing the nation’s economic difficulties. One of the major issues highlighted by Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman was the problem of Independent Power Producers (IPPs). He appealed to the government to find a practical and sustainable solution to the IPP issue, which has been widely debated due to its impact on electricity prices and the country’s financial stability. According to him, resolving this matter would help reduce the economic burden on both the government and ordinary citizens. Speaking about the national economy, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman painted a concerning picture of Pakistan’s financial condition. He stated that after distributing the constitutionally allocated shares to the provinces and making payments on interest obligations, the federal government is left with very limited financial resources. This situation, he suggested, reflects the severity of the country’s fiscal challenges and highlights the urgent need for comprehensive economic reforms. He stressed that policymakers should adopt measures that promote financial stability, reduce unnecessary expenditures, and improve revenue generation without placing excessive burdens on the public. The event also featured an address by Maulana Bashir Farooqi, who criticized the government’s approach toward eliminating the interest-based financial system. He argued that the authorities are not demonstrating sufficient seriousness in transitioning toward an Islamic banking framework. According to him, meaningful reforms require not only policy changes but also practical steps to prepare financial institutions for such a transformation. Maulana Bashir Farooqi announced that his organization is willing to provide training for approximately 100,000 employees working in conventional banks. He explained that this initiative aims to equip banking professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate within an interest-free Islamic banking system if the government decides to pursue such reforms. He maintained that the availability of trained professionals would facilitate a smoother transition and strengthen the implementation of Islamic financial principles in the country’s banking sector. The speeches delivered at the Karachi ceremony underscored concerns regarding Pakistan’s judicial efficiency, economic management, and financial policies. Both religious leaders called on the government to prioritize domestic reforms, strengthen public institutions, address long-standing economic challenges, and work toward a system that better serves the interests of the people.

Fawad urges Imran Khan’s immediate hospital tran…

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry has called for the immediate end of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s solitary confinement and urged authorities to shift him to a hospital following recommendations in his latest medical report. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Chaudhry expressed concern over Imran Khan’s health and conditions at Adiala Jail. He said the medical report made it necessary for authorities to end the former prime minister’s solitary confinement and provide him with better medical facilities. Chaudhry criticised the decision to keep Imran Khan in isolation and alleged that denying adequate medical care to a major political leader was unacceptable. He urged the authorities to follow the recommendations of medical experts and ensure that all necessary treatment and facilities were provided without delay. A medical report submitted to the Supreme Court reportedly contains recommendations from a medical board that examined Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. According to the report, the medical board recommended several measures to help manage Imran Khan’s blood pressure and anxiety. The doctors recommended that the former prime minister be allowed to walk for at least one hour every day. The board said some relaxation in the prison environment was necessary in view of his current health condition. The medical team also recommended providing Imran Khan with newspapers, magazines, books and television facilities. The measures are intended to keep him mentally engaged during his imprisonment. The medical board also made recommendations regarding his meetings with family members and his wife. It suggested that meetings with his family and wife should take place more regularly and for longer than the currently prescribed duration, subject to the applicable rules. According to the recommendations, regular physical activity, access to reading material and greater interaction with family members could help reduce Imran Khan’s anxiety and assist in keeping his blood pressure under control. Fawad Chaudhry has called on the authorities to implement the medical recommendations and ensure that Imran Khan receives appropriate treatment and a suitable environment during his imprisonment.

Arshad Nadeem loses Commonwealth javelin title

Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem was unable to defend his Commonwealth Games men’s javelin title after finishing ninth in the final at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow on Friday. The 29-year-old struggled throughout the competition and failed to qualify for the final three attempts. His title defence began with a foul on his opening throw, followed by a best effort of 77.41 metres in the second round. The distance briefly placed him on the leaderboard, but stronger performances from his rivals pushed him down to ninth among the 12 finalists. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage produced a sensational throw of 89.75 metres in the second round to secure the gold medal. Although all five of his remaining attempts ended in fouls, his winning mark remained unmatched for the rest of the competition. With the victory, Pathirage became only the third South Asian athlete to win the Commonwealth Games men’s javelin title. His triumph also ended Sri Lanka’s 20-year wait for a Commonwealth Games gold medal, with the nation’s previous gold coming at the 2006 Melbourne Games. India’s Neeraj Chopra claimed the silver medal with a season-best throw of 85.83 metres, also achieved in the second round. Fellow Indian athlete Yash Vir Singh secured bronze with a personal-best effort of 85.41 metres on his final attempt. US delegation walks out of UN Security Council after dispute with France

The United States walked out of a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday during remarks by France’s ambassador, escalating a diplomatic dispute between the two allies over human rights and the leadership of the UN’s top human rights office. The disagreement began after a recent vote on extending the term of Volker Turk as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The United States joined Russia and North Korea in opposing his reappointment, placing Washington on the same side as two countries it has frequently criticized over human rights issues. Following the vote, France’s mission to the United Nations strongly criticized the US position on social media, saying Washington had once been a global symbol of human rights but no longer deserved that reputation. The statement drew a sharp response from American officials and set the stage for the diplomatic confrontation that followed. The latest tension unfolded during an emergency Security Council meeting on Russia’s war in Ukraine. As France’s UN Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont began speaking, members of the US delegation left the chamber in protest. US Ambassador Dan Negrea later said the walkout was a direct response to what he described as France’s disrespectful and condescending language toward the United States. He warned that similar protests would continue unless France changed its approach and withdrew its criticism. Earlier, US Ambassador Mike Waltz defended Washington’s opposition to Turk’s second term. He argued that the human rights chief had unfairly criticized democratic countries while failing to take a strong enough stance against governments with poor human rights records. Waltz did not identify specific examples to support his criticism. During his time in office, Turk has repeatedly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has also raised concerns about Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Despite US objections, his second term was approved by a large majority of UN member states, with 144 countries voting in favor, 10 voting against and 13 abstaining. The dispute reflects broader tensions between the United States and the United Nations under President Donald Trump’s administration. In recent years, Washington has reduced financial support for several UN agencies and withdrawn from a number of UN bodies as part of a wider review of its international commitments. After the vote on Turk’s reappointment, US Ambassador Jeff Bartos warned that the United States would reconsider its participation, engagement and funding for UN institutions. He accused the organization of allowing procedural abuses and political deals to influence key appointments. France, however, strongly defended Turk’s leadership. Ambassador Bonnafont described him as a principled and impartial official who had carried out his responsibilities with integrity during his first term. France argued that his reappointment reflected the confidence of the overwhelming majority of UN member states. A spokesperson for the United Nations declined to comment directly on the American walkout but said the organization expects all member countries to respect decisions made through its established voting process. The incident has added to growing friction between Washington and the UN at a time when international cooperation is already under pressure from several global conflicts.

Hezbollah slams Israel talks as ‘humiliation’

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem has strongly criticized direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, describing the dialogue as a series of “concessions” that have failed to serve Lebanon’s national interests. Speaking during an Arbaeen commemoration in the Lebanese city of Baalbek, Qassem said the ongoing negotiations had brought “humiliation and repeated compromises” rather than meaningful progress. He urged Lebanese leaders to avoid external pressure and instead pursue policies that safeguard the country’s sovereignty. The Hezbollah chief also criticized President Joseph Aoun, claiming the president had failed to play a neutral and unifying role during the current political situation. Qassem argued that Lebanon’s leadership should engage in dialogue with domestic political forces rather than making concessions to achieve foreign policy objectives. He further claimed that Israeli attacks were halted only after a memorandum linked to efforts between Iran and the United States helped reduce tensions. According to Qassem, Lebanon’s political leadership would not achieve lasting stability by following policies influenced by outside powers. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran remains committed to defending its territorial integrity but has no intention of expanding the ongoing conflict beyond its borders. Addressing a gathering in Tehran, Pezeshkian said Iran would continue protecting its national security while focusing on strengthening internal unity. He stressed that a united society would leave no opportunity for foreign interference or attempts to create divisions within the country. The latest statements come as uncertainty continues over possible diplomatic contacts between Iran and the United States. US President Donald Trump recently said discussions with Tehran were underway and described them as a final opportunity to reach an agreement. However, Iranian officials denied that any negotiations were currently taking place or that formal meetings had been scheduled. The conflicting statements have added to uncertainty over future diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions. The regional situation has also affected global energy markets. Saudi energy giant Aramco reported a sharp rise in second-quarter earnings, saying higher oil prices and supply disruptions linked to the regional conflict significantly boosted its financial performance. The company said it maintained production despite challenging conditions across the region.
