Thousands return home in Spain as new heatwave heightens wildfire threat

Thousands of residents have been allowed to return to their homes after authorities eased evacuation orders in several parts of Spain affected by devastating wildfires. However, officials are warning that a new heatwave expected to hit the country could reignite existing fires and create fresh emergencies as firefighters continue battling dangerous conditions.

Restrictions have been lifted in areas across Toledo, Madrid, Ávila and Castellón, allowing many displaced families to go back home after days of uncertainty. In the Madrid region alone, around 24,000 people have been permitted to return, while lockdown measures affecting another 20,000 residents have also been removed.

Despite the progress, several fires remain active. One of the biggest concerns is the wildfire near Burgohondo, about 150 kilometers west of Madrid, which has already burned more than 43,000 hectares of land. Authorities say it is now considered the largest wildfire ever recorded in Spain. Across the country, more than 207,000 hectares have been destroyed by wildfires so far this year.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the coming hours would be critical as firefighters work to bring the remaining blazes under control. He noted that conditions had improved but warned that rising temperatures, low humidity and strong winds could quickly reverse the progress made in recent days. Emergency crews remain on high alert as Spain prepares for its fourth major heatwave of the summer.

Fire officials said the Burgohondo blaze had not spread overnight, but they remain concerned that extreme weather could cause new flare ups. Firefighters are focusing on securing a perimeter stretching about 180 kilometers to prevent the flames from spreading into nearby communities and forests.

Among those returning home are residents of the towns of Navas del Rey and Chapinería, who had been evacuated earlier in the week. Many families have found damaged homes, destroyed property and lost livelihoods. Chapinería Mayor Lucía Moya said the community faces a long recovery, with many residents needing support to rebuild their lives after the disaster.

Some evacuees are still unable to return. Around 300 people displaced from the nearby Tiétar Valley continue to stay in temporary accommodation provided by local authorities. Officials have pledged to maintain support services until it is safe for everyone to go home.

While no deaths have been reported in the fires near Madrid or Castellón, authorities confirmed that a woman injured in an earlier wildfire in Almería has died in hospital. The Almería fires, which occurred earlier this month, claimed the lives of 14 people, including citizens of the United Kingdom, Belgium, the United States, France and Spain.

Wildfires are also creating challenges elsewhere in Europe. In neighboring France, firefighters continue to monitor large blazes in the Gironde region, where several flare ups have occurred despite efforts to stabilize the fires. Authorities have warned that temperatures could reach 41 degrees Celsius, with dry winds increasing the risk of further outbreaks. Special protection measures have also been introduced around defense and aerospace facilities located in the affected area.

Portugal and Greece are facing similar threats. Emergency crews in northern Portugal are working to contain an active wildfire near Valpaços while protecting nearby infrastructure, including a water treatment plant and a gas storage facility. In Greece, firefighters are responding to blazes on the island of Paros and in the southern mainland region of Trifylia.

Scientists continue to warn that climate change is contributing to longer and more intense heatwaves across Europe. Rising temperatures, prolonged dry conditions and stronger winds have increased the frequency and severity of wildfires, making firefighting operations more difficult and placing greater pressure on communities across the continent. Authorities are urging residents in high risk areas to remain cautious as extreme weather conditions are expected to continue in the coming days.

Diplomatic storm erupts over podcast banter involving Japanese prime minister

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing intense political backlash after a podcast appearance triggered a high-profile diplomatic row with Tokyo. The controversy stems from an episode, recorded in July, in which Albanese discussed a pair of prized crown melons presented to him during a May bilateral meeting by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. During the segment, podcast host Nikki Osborne made an explicit joke comparing the fruit to female anatomy, to which Albanese responded with agreement. The exchange went largely unnoticed upon release but reignited publicly after Shingo Yamagami, Japan’s former ambassador to Australia, published a scathing opinion piece accusing the Australian leader of casually mocking a key strategic ally. Yamagami described the remarks as a sexist insult that betrayed the close diplomatic bond between the two nations, noting that crown melons are highly valued cultural gifts in Japan, often worth upwards of 30,000 yen (£150) each. Opposition leaders in Canberra immediately seized on the commentary, demanding an official apology from Albanese for what they termed “classless” and disrespectful conduct. Albanese rejected calls to apologise in parliament, insisting that the partnership between Australia and Japan remains as strong as ever and pointing out that the joke was initiated by the host rather than himself. Senior Labor Party ministers also defended the prime minister, arguing that the comments were taken out of context by political opponents and former diplomats. The episode marks the second time Albanese has faced criticism over his appearance on the show, following a prior apology for crude remarks regarding pop star Kylie Minogue.

Sania claims Imad ignored unborn baby’s heartbeat

Sania Ashfaq, the former wife of Pakistani cricketer Imad Wasim, has made a series of fresh allegations about their marriage, divorce and family life, claiming she faced emotional distress, family pressure and coercion during their relationship. Speaking in a recent interview, Sania, who is currently living in the United Kingdom as a single mother with her three children, shared details about her marriage and its eventual breakdown. She said she first met Imad Wasim online and described him as kind, caring and supportive during the early stages of their relationship. According to her, the couple later married, after which she left the UK and moved to Pakistan, distancing herself from her family and friends. Sania alleged that their relationship changed after marriage due to increasing interference from Imad’s family. She claimed his behaviour would change whenever he was with family members and that they consistently supported him during disagreements. She said her first pregnancy was a happy period for the couple and recalled that they performed Umrah together in 2024. However, she claimed that difficulties emerged during her second pregnancy, prompting her to keep the news hidden for some time because of previous pressure related to terminating a pregnancy. According to Sania, tensions escalated after Imad informed his mother about the pregnancy. She alleged that family disputes intensified and eventually led to serious marital conflict. She further claimed that she felt isolated throughout the marriage because her own family remained in the UK. Sania also alleged that she received threats during her pregnancy and said the situation continued to deteriorate. Sania claimed that Imad later proposed relocating to the UK so the family could start a new life together. She said she agreed, believing their relationship could improve. However, she alleged that after arriving in Britain, Imad informed her through legal representatives that he intended to end the marriage before leaving her at her mother’s home. She said she endured months of emotional distress while trying to save the marriage and claimed she continued receiving legal correspondence during that period. Sania also alleged that she supported Imad during a difficult period in his life and remained committed to the relationship despite ongoing challenges. Discussing one of the most emotional moments of her interview, Sania claimed that Imad had arranged a medical appointment related to terminating her pregnancy. She alleged that although a doctor allowed him to hear the unborn baby’s heartbeat, he still insisted on proceeding with the abortion. According to her, she was three months pregnant at the time. She claimed she was given an injection, lost consciousness and later discovered that the pregnancy had been terminated. Sania said the incident remains the most painful experience of her life and that she does not believe she will ever be able to forgive it. She added that her main focus now is raising her children and praying for their success and well-being.

Punjab PMS officers oppose plan to create 101 AAC …

LAHORE: The Provincial Management Service (PMS) Officers Association has strongly opposed the Punjab government’s proposal to create 101 new Additional Assistant Commissioner (AAC) posts, describing the move as unnecessary and harmful to the existing administrative structure. The association argued that the AAC posts had been abolished years ago and their revival was not justified, particularly after the establishment of the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA), which was created to strengthen enforcement and regulatory functions across the province. During an executive committee meeting chaired by Association President Qamar Zaman Qaisrani, members unanimously decided to raise their concerns with senior government officials. A delegation of the association is expected to meet the Punjab services secretary and the additional chief secretary to seek a review of the proposed decision. The association warned that if its concerns remain unaddressed, PMS officers across Punjab will begin a province-wide protest campaign. As part of the first phase, officers plan to wear black armbands while performing official duties to register their protest against the government’s decision. PMS officers believe the creation of the new posts would place a significant financial burden on the provincial treasury. According to the association’s estimates, establishing one Additional Assistant Commissioner post, including official facilities, office infrastructure, staff, transport and operational expenses, would cost approximately Rs46.8 million. They claim that creating all 101 posts would require nearly Rs4.73 billion initially, in addition to recurring expenditures on salaries, allowances and other administrative costs. The association further expressed concerns over what it described as long-standing issues within the provincial bureaucracy. These include delays in promotion boards, alleged discrimination in transfers and postings, and the appointment of junior officers to positions traditionally reserved for senior officials. Former administrative secretary Yawar Mehdi also commented on the proposal, saying that efforts to improve public service delivery were welcome if they genuinely strengthened governance. However, he stressed that introducing additional administrative positions should not weaken the existing civil service structure or negatively affect the career progression of Provincial Management Service officers.

Peshawar court bars marriage of 13-year-old girl u…

The Child Protection Court in Peshawar has issued a ruling on a petition concerning the alleged forced marriage of a 13-year-old girl in the Phando area. According to the written order, the girl will not be married off or sent to her husband’s home until she reaches the age of 16. The girl’s father also agreed to the court’s direction. The petition was filed by an officer of the Child Protection Commission in Peshawar, who approached the court over allegations that the minor had been forcibly married in Phando. During the proceedings, the girl was produced before the court in the presence of a social worker and a psychologist from the Child Protection Unit. The court reviewed the circumstances surrounding the alleged marriage and issued its written decision. The girl’s father, grandfather and grandmother denied that she had been married. They told the court that no marriage ceremony had taken place and that the family had only held an engagement ceremony. The court directed the Child Protection Officer to closely monitor the girl’s safety and submit a follow-up report every three months. The ruling effectively prevents the girl’s marriage or departure to a marital home until she turns 16, while authorities will continue monitoring her welfare and protection.
