Oscar-winning musician Glen Hansard dies in Dublin motorcycle crash

Oscar-winning Irish singer, songwriter and actor Glen Hansard has died following a motorcycle crash in Dublin. He was 56. Police said the single vehicle accident happened in the early hours of Wednesday on Lower Road in Lucan, west of the Irish capital, and have appealed for witnesses as investigations continue.

Hansard rose to international fame as the lead singer of the rock band The Frames and later gained worldwide recognition through the independent film Once. He also appeared in the 1991 film The Commitments, where he played guitarist Outspan Foster. Before achieving success, he spent years performing as a street musician in Dublin, building a reputation for his powerful voice and heartfelt songwriting.

His greatest international achievement came in 2008 when he and Czech musician Markéta Irglová won the Academy Awards for Best Original Song with Falling Slowly, written for the low budget film Once. The film, which tells the story of two musicians who form a creative partnership in Dublin, became a global success after winning the World Cinema Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Its Broadway adaptation later earned eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Hansard also performed as one half of the musical duo The Swell Season and released several solo albums during his career. His 2015 album Didn’t He Ramble received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, further establishing him as one of Ireland’s most respected contemporary musicians.

Away from the stage, Hansard was widely admired for his charitable work. In 2010, he launched Dublin’s annual Christmas Eve charity busk to raise funds for the Dublin Simon Community. The event became a yearly tradition, attracting well known artists including Bono, Sinéad O’Connor, Imelda May and Shane MacGowan while raising awareness and support for people experiencing homelessness.

The charity paid tribute to Hansard following news of his death, describing him as a generous supporter whose compassion extended far beyond his music. It praised his dedication to social justice and said his work had made a lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable people across Ireland.

Hansard is survived by his wife and their three year old son. In a BBC interview in 2023, he spoke about how becoming a father had transformed his life, describing the experience as something that changed his outlook completely and brought him immense happiness.

His management company confirmed his death in a statement, saying his family was devastated by the tragic loss and requested privacy during this difficult time. Friends and fellow artists also shared heartfelt tributes. Actor Chris O’Dowd remembered Hansard as a musician whose songs deeply moved listeners, while fellow The Commitments actor Andrew Strong described his death as a heartbreaking and senseless loss. Waterboys frontman Mike Scott and Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin also honored Hansard’s contribution to Irish culture, praising his remarkable talent and expressing sympathy to his family, friends and fans.

Hansard’s career spanned more than three decades, during which he became one of Ireland’s most recognizable musical voices. Through his songwriting, performances and charitable work, he left a lasting legacy that reached audiences far beyond his home country.

    Pakistan repays $1.4bn China loan

Pakistan has repaid a $1.4 billion commercial loan to China, with refinancing expected within the next few weeks, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad said on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance at Parliament House, the SBP governor said the country had made external debt repayments worth $2.2 billion during July 2026. The repayments included the $1.4 billion commercial loan to Chinese banks, while the remaining $800 million was used to settle other external liabilities. Ahmad said the refinancing from Chinese banks had not yet been received but was expected shortly, adding that the funds would be made available to Pakistan after a brief delay. The central bank governor also revealed that the SBP had purchased $28 billion over the past three years to strengthen the country’s foreign exchange reserves. He said Pakistan’s external debt repayment requirement had declined from $26.5 billion to $21.5 billion, easing pressure on the country’s finances during the current fiscal year. According to Ahmad, around $3.5 billion of the remaining repayments will be used to service interest obligations. He said the government would continue its strategy of increasing foreign exchange reserves while maintaining external financial stability. The SBP governor further noted that Pakistan would require the rollover of nearly $12 billion in deposits from Saudi Arabia and China to support its external financing position. He expressed confidence that the country’s debt repayment burden would remain lower this year compared with previous years, helping improve Pakistan’s overall economic outlook.

Court awards Ahsan Iqbal Rs2.5m in defamation case

An Islamabad District and Sessions Court has ruled in favour of Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal in a long-running defamation case against PTI leader Murad Saeed. The court ordered Murad Saeed to pay Rs2.5 million in damages for making allegations that were not proven during the proceedings. Additional Sessions Judge Hakim Khan announced the verdict after hearing the case. The court held that Murad Saeed’s statements had damaged Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation and public image. It directed the PTI leader to compensate the federal minister with Rs2.5 million. According to the judgment, Murad Saeed accused Ahsan Iqbal of being involved in corruption worth Rs70 billion. However, the court found that he failed to provide any evidence to support the allegations. The court ruled that the accusations of corruption, misuse of authority, and receiving illegal commissions were defamatory because they remained unsubstantiated. The judgment stated that Ahsan Iqbal had initially sought Rs10 billion in damages for the alleged harm caused to his reputation. However, the court observed that the amount claimed was excessive in view of the evidence presented during the trial. It therefore awarded Rs2.5 million as reasonable compensation. The court further observed that Murad Saeed’s controversial statements had harmed Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation, dignity, and credibility. It said the allegations created a negative impression of the minister among the public and directly targeted his honesty, integrity, and professional standing. The judgment also noted that Murad Saeed neither appeared before the court during the proceedings nor submitted evidence to substantiate the corruption claims. The absence of supporting material, the court said, weakened his defence and left the allegations unproven. The case originated from statements made by Murad Saeed in 2019 regarding the Multan-Sukkur Motorway project. At the time, he alleged that Ahsan Iqbal had committed corruption in connection with the project. After reviewing the evidence and hearing the arguments, the court concluded that the accusations were not established and therefore amounted to defamation. The verdict marks the conclusion of the defamation proceedings, with the court reaffirming that public allegations of corruption must be backed by credible evidence.

Pakistan announces Hajj 2027 packages, 107,526 government seats

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced the initial arrangements for Hajj 2027, allocating 107,526 seats under the Government Hajj Scheme and introducing a fully digital application and payment system aimed at making the pilgrimage process easier and more transparent for applicants. Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said the government has set the estimated cost of the 40-day Hajj package at Rs1.2 million, while the 20 to 25-day package will cost Rs1.3 million. According to the minister, the Hajj 2027 process has been transformed into an end-to-end digital system on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with the Ministry of Religious Affairs working in coordination with the Ministry of Information Technology and the National IT Board. The new arrangements are designed to allow intending pilgrims to complete most of the necessary procedures without repeatedly visiting government offices or banks. Applicants will be able to submit their Hajj applications from their homes, deposit the required dues through digital channels and access information and other facilities through the Pak Hajj App and Hajj Portal. Yousaf said the ministry’s primary objective was to reduce the difficulties traditionally faced by pilgrims during the application process. He said the digital system would help eliminate lengthy queues, unnecessary journeys and waiting periods while also making the overall process more convenient for applicants. First instalment to be collected from August 17 The minister announced that the first phase of payments under the approved Hajj Policy 2027 would begin on August 17. Applicants selected under the relevant phase will be required to deposit 50% of the total package cost as the first instalment. The government will subsequently demand the second instalment during the first week of October. The authorities have also opened the final application phase for Hajj 2027. Around 400,000 pilgrims who have already completed the pre-registration process will now be eligible to proceed with their formal applications. Officials expect the digital registration mechanism to simplify verification and reduce delays as the large number of pre-registered applicants move into the next stage. Passport information to be verified digitally The Religious Affairs Ministry has also established a data-sharing arrangement with the Passport Office as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the digital Hajj registration system. Through the integration, applicants’ passport information can be verified more efficiently, potentially reducing paperwork and manual intervention during the application process. Yousaf said linking databases of different government institutions would improve the accuracy and speed of processing while increasing transparency. The minister maintained that the use of digital verification would also reduce the possibility of errors arising from manual data entry and repeated documentation. HBL named banking partner Habib Bank Limited (HBL) has been designated as the authorised banking partner for the Government Hajj Scheme. According to the minister, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and HBL have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering the banking arrangements associated with Hajj applications and payment of dues. Pilgrims will have three digital payment options available under the government scheme. They can pay through a OneLink PSID, use a credit or debit card, or download a digital challan through the Pak Hajj App and deposit the required amount at any HBL branch. The government has stressed that applicants should use only the officially prescribed channels when making payments. Seats to be confirmed on first-come, first-served basis Under the Government Hajj Scheme, applicants who successfully deposit the required amount through the online payment system will have their seats confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the allocated seats are filled, the authorities will stop accepting further payments for that category. The government has separately allocated 30,000 seats for the Short Hajj Scheme. Online payments for the short-duration package will be closed once the allocated quota is exhausted. Authorities have also outlined arrangements for applicants who are unable to secure a seat during the current phase. If the available Hajj 2027 quota is filled, remaining registered applicants will be placed on a waiting list for the following year. At the same time, registration for the Hajj 2028-2030 period will continue according to the announced policy. The minister said details concerning the 10% payment requirement for the Long-Term Hajj Scheme would be announced after completion of the current application phase. Private Hajj Scheme gets 71,684 seats Alongside the government programme, the federal government has allocated 71,684 seats for the Private Hajj Scheme for 2027. Under the new digital mechanism, pilgrims opting for the private scheme will be able to compare packages offered by 25 government-approved authorised Hajj organisers. The available packages and participating companies will be displayed through the official Hajj Portal and Pak Hajj App, allowing intending pilgrims to choose an organiser and package according to their preferences. The government has made it clear that the selection of private Hajj organisers and payments must also be completed through the designated official digital system. Pilgrims warned against direct payments The Religious Affairs Ministry has issued a specific warning to intending pilgrims against handing over money directly to private Hajj operators or tour companies. Yousaf said any payment or financial transaction conducted outside the officially designated government system would not be recognised. Pilgrims have therefore been advised to verify the status of Hajj organisers through the official digital platform before making any payment. The government believes that centralising the selection and payment process through the digital Hajj system will help protect pilgrims from potential fraud, unauthorised operators and disputes over payments.
