Pakistan faces 400+ cyberattacks this year

Pakistan has faced more than 400 cyberattacks during the current year, with authorities successfully stopping all reported attacks in time, according to the Director General of the National Cyber Emergency Response Team, Dr Haider Abbas.

Dr Abbas said the growing number of cyber threats showed the need for stronger national cybersecurity measures. He called for the establishment of a powerful National Cyber Security Authority to coordinate cybersecurity efforts across the country.

Speaking in an interview, he said Pakistan was facing increasingly complex cyber threats. He also warned about the risks posed by cyberattacks allegedly backed by state actors.

According to Dr Abbas, Pakistan needs a central institution with sufficient authority to deal with the growing cybersecurity challenges. He proposed placing the National Cyber Security Authority under the prime minister.

He said a national authority working under the prime minister could respond more effectively to major cyber threats. It could also improve coordination between government institutions and other organisations responsible for digital security.

The official stressed that cybersecurity had become an important national issue. The increasing dependence on digital systems has also increased the potential risks to government institutions, businesses and other critical sectors.

More than 400 attacks reported this year highlight the scale of the challenge facing Pakistan. Although the attacks were reportedly prevented, officials believe the country needs stronger systems to detect and respond to future threats.

Dr Abbas said the proposed authority should oversee cybersecurity across the country. It should also ensure that different institutions follow effective security measures and remain prepared for emerging digital threats.

A central cybersecurity body could help improve coordination during cyber emergencies. It could also allow authorities to respond quickly when sensitive digital systems come under attack.

The official’s proposal comes as cyber threats continue to become more sophisticated worldwide. Governments are increasingly focusing on protecting critical infrastructure, public institutions and digital networks from cyberattacks.

Pakistan has also expanded its dependence on online systems in government, banking, communications and other sectors. Any major cyberattack on important infrastructure could potentially disrupt essential services.

Dr Abbas therefore called for a stronger national framework to protect Pakistan’s digital environment. He said the proposed authority should have a clear mandate and sufficient powers to manage cybersecurity across the country.

He also emphasised the importance of a coordinated national response. Different government departments and institutions need to work together to identify threats and prevent attacks before they cause damage.

The official said placing the authority under the prime minister would give it greater effectiveness and allow important decisions to be taken quickly.

The disclosure of more than 400 cyberattacks this year has renewed attention on Pakistan’s digital security. Authorities are now facing growing pressure to strengthen national cybersecurity systems and improve preparedness against future threats.

Megan Moroney shares emotional note after cutting Denver show short due to illness

Megan Moroney had to walk off stage midway through her Denver concert on Tuesday after falling ill just a few songs into the performance. The singer apologized to the crowd before leaving, promising fans she’d make it up to them, though the exact cause of her illness has not been shared. Ball Arena confirmed the situation shortly after, posting a statement saying Moroney was unable to continue the show due to illness and that the performance would be ending early. The venue added that further updates would follow once available. Fans began exiting the downtown arena just after 9 p.m. as word spread that the concert wouldn’t resume. Moroney later addressed the situation directly through an emotional Instagram Story, calling it one of the toughest calls she has ever had to make. She wrote that stopping the show was something she never wanted to do, and apologized again for cutting the night short. The “No Caller ID” singer explained that she holds herself to a standard of always giving fans a full, quality performance, and said she knew she was not in a state to deliver that on stage that night. Rather than push through, she chose to stop the show entirely. Moroney also confirmed a new date for the Denver show, telling fans it is now rescheduled for August 27. She noted that anyone holding tickets from Tuesday’s show would have them automatically honored for the rescheduled date, while those unable to attend the new show could request a refund from wherever they originally purchased their tickets. She closed her message with another round of apologies, saying this was the first time she has ever had to cancel a show mid-performance and expressing how sorry she was for the disruption. The Denver stop was part of Moroney’s ongoing Cloud 9 Tour, which continues later this week with shows in Portland, Oregon on Saturday and Seattle on Sunday. Notably, Tuesday’s cancelled performance happened the same night as another major concert in the Denver area, with Australian rock band AC/DC performing at Empower Field at Mile High, making it a especially busy night for live music fans in the city.

Punjab launches 1st overseas digital land registry

LAHORE: In a landmark move aimed at simplifying property transactions for overseas Pakistanis, the Punjab Land Records Authority (PLRA), in collaboration with the Board of Revenue Punjab, has successfully completed the province’s first fully digital land registration through the Pakistan High Commission in London. The initiative marks a significant step toward modernizing land services, allowing Pakistanis living abroad to buy, sell, and transfer property in Punjab without the need to travel back to the country. By introducing a secure digital process, the system is designed to make property transactions faster, more transparent, and better protected against fraud. The first transaction under the new framework involved a Pakistani citizen based in London who transferred ownership of land located in Dina, Punjab, to a buyer in Pakistan. The seller’s statement was recorded remotely through a secure digital link, while the entire legal registration process was completed electronically in accordance with official procedures. Director General of the Punjab Land Records Authority, Ikram-ul-Haq, described the successful registration as a major milestone in strengthening the confidence of overseas Pakistanis and improving transparency in land dealings. He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to delivering international-standard public services through technology while promoting efficient and citizen-friendly governance. According to the PLRA, the service is currently available to Pakistanis residing in the United Kingdom. Authorities plan to expand the facility to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates within the next 30 days through continued collaboration between the Punjab Land Records Authority and Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Officials believe the digital registration system will make property ownership and transfers significantly more convenient for overseas Pakistanis while reinforcing trust in Pakistan’s land administration through secure and technology-driven services.

Former MPA accuses ex-wife of AI image deception

Former Sindh Assembly member Ghulam Rasool Unar has accused his former wife of allegedly deceiving him through artificial intelligence-generated images. The case was heard by the Additional District and Sessions Court South in Karachi. During the hearing, the former MPA’s ex-wife opposed the petition filed by Unar. Her lawyer rejected several claims made in the petition. He said the former MPA’s claim that he had established contact with the woman through social media was not correct. The lawyer also told the court that the applicant had accepted certain conditions before the marriage. He said these conditions were acknowledged through an affidavit signed before the couple’s marriage. The dispute relates to allegations about photographs allegedly shared before the marriage. A few days earlier, Ghulam Rasool Unar had approached the court with his allegations. In his petition, he claimed that he had communicated with the woman through social media before their marriage. According to the former MPA, photographs were shared with him during their communication. He claimed that the woman appeared different in those photographs. Unar alleged that he saw his former wife in person for the first time after the marriage. He claimed that her appearance was completely different from the photographs he had received before the marriage. The former lawmaker alleged that the photographs had been manipulated or generated using artificial intelligence. He said the difference between the images and the woman’s actual appearance led him to distance himself from her. Unar further told the court that he stopped maintaining contact with the woman after seeing her in person. He also stated in his petition that he divorced her on August 9. The divorce followed the dispute over the alleged differences between the photographs and her actual appearance, according to his account. The former wife’s lawyer, however, disputed the allegations. The defence maintained that the claims made by the former MPA should not be accepted without proper legal examination. The court proceedings have brought attention to the growing legal questions surrounding AI-generated and digitally manipulated images. Such technology can create highly realistic photographs and has raised concerns about identity, consent and online deception. The case is still being heard. The allegations made by the former MPA have not been established by the court, while his former wife has challenged his claims through her legal counsel.
