Arab and Palestinian groups urge global action to protect Jerusalem and Al Aqsa Mosque

Fourteen Arab and Palestinian organisations have issued an urgent appeal calling for immediate international action to protect occupied East Jerusalem and the Al Aqsa Mosque, warning that recent Israeli measures are threatening the city’s religious heritage and historic identity. The groups said the situation has reached a critical stage and argued that stronger global intervention is needed to prevent further escalation.

In a joint statement released on Wednesday, the organisations expressed concern over what they described as increasing Israeli actions aimed at changing the existing status of Jerusalem and its holy sites. They said recent developments have targeted not only Al Aqsa Mosque but also the Palestinian residents of Jerusalem and the city’s Arab, Islamic, and Christian character.

Al Aqsa Mosque is considered Islam’s third holiest site. The same area is also revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, believed to be the location of two ancient Jewish temples. Israel captured East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab Israeli war and later declared the entire city its capital in 1980, a move that has not been recognised by most of the international community.

According to the appeal, Israeli authorities have allowed an increase in visits to the Al Aqsa compound by Jewish groups under police protection. The organisations claimed these actions, along with restrictions placed on Muslim worshippers, are attempts to alter the long standing arrangements governing access to the holy site.

The statement also raised concerns about attacks on worshippers, restrictions placed on religious leaders, and measures targeting guards responsible for protecting the mosque. The groups argued that these actions undermine freedom of worship and threaten the historical and legal status of one of Islam’s most important religious landmarks.

Beyond the mosque itself, the organisations accused Israel of expanding settlements, demolishing Palestinian homes, revoking residency rights, carrying out excavations around the Old City, and increasing pressure on both Islamic and Christian religious sites. They warned that these policies are changing the city’s demographic and cultural landscape while placing Jerusalem’s diverse religious heritage at risk.

The appeal also highlighted concerns over the city’s Christian community. It said restrictions affecting churches, religious institutions, and Christian leaders threaten the long established Christian presence in Jerusalem and weaken the city’s multicultural identity.

The organisations argued that international statements of concern are no longer enough to address the situation. They called for coordinated political, legal, and human rights efforts to stop actions they consider violations of international law. They also urged governments and international institutions to ensure accountability and prevent further changes to the city’s status.

The statement specifically called on Jordan, which holds custodial responsibilities for Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites, to intensify diplomatic efforts and encourage stronger international engagement. The groups said Jordan’s role remains essential in defending the religious and historical significance of the city’s sacred places.

Describing Jerusalem as a shared historical, cultural, and religious responsibility, the organisations stressed that protecting the city requires practical measures rather than symbolic declarations. They said preserving the rights of its residents and safeguarding its holy sites should remain an international priority.

The appeal was signed by several organisations, including the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, the Al Quds International Institution, the Arab National Congress, the European Palestinian Conference, and the Islamic National Conference.

The statement comes as tensions continue to rise across the occupied West Bank, where Israeli military raids and settler related violence have increased since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. Palestinian officials say thousands of people have been injured or arrested during this period, while violence has intensified further following recent deadly clashes near Nablus involving Palestinians, Israeli settlers, and Israeli forces.

The rumors gained further momentum as the two were spotted together on multiple occasions, including social media posts that showcased their time together away from the spotlight. Interest in their relationship continued to grow in September 2025 when Hoffman and Parker attended the Toronto International Film Festival to promote Poetic License. During the event, the actors were photographed sharing a lighthearted moment while playing with a puppy, fueling even more speculation that they were more than just co-stars. The party is seeking Rs1 billion in damages over remarks it says harmed its reputation. The notice relates to allegations made by Zaidi about the political party and its role in public protests. JI said the former FBR chief made the remarks during a podcast and later repeated them on different social media platforms. According to the party, the notice was issued on July 27 through Advocate Tahir Iqbal Malik. It was sent on the instructions of JI Karachi General Secretary Taufiquddin Siddiqui. JI has accused Zaidi of making serious and damaging claims. The party says the allegations suggested that it had received money to weaken or suppress public protests and political issues. The party also objected to comments in which Zaidi allegedly described JI as an “establishment firewall”. According to JI, the remarks created an impression that the party was working to dilute public concerns and protests. The legal notice claims that the statements included allegations of secret funding, bribery, corruption and political misconduct. It also alleges that the remarks suggested coordination between the party and state institutions. JI has demanded that Zaidi provide evidence to support his claims. The party has asked him to identify the person who allegedly made the payment and the individual who supposedly received it. The notice also seeks details about the alleged amount, including when and where the payment was made. JI has asked for information about the method of payment and any bank records or financial documents linked to the allegation. It has asked for the names of witnesses and any documents, recordings or other material that could support the claims. JI also wants Zaidi to disclose the source of the information on which his allegations were based. The party has said the claims should be backed by verifiable evidence. When approached for a response, Zaidi said he had forwarded the legal notice to his lawyer. He said he would seek legal advice on the matter. The dispute could now move into a legal phase if the former FBR chairman does not respond to the notice in the manner demanded by the party.

Faysal Quraishi claims Pakistani dramas now rival Netflix globally

Veteran actor Faysal Quraishi has made a bold statement about how far Pakistani dramas have come on the world stage. He shared his views during a recent appearance on Fahad Abid’s podcast, Fahad’s Den. According to Quraishi, Pakistani dramas are now competing directly with Netflix productions on a global level. He noted that free-to-air Pakistani dramas are increasingly being compared to major international Netflix shows, despite operating on vastly different budgets. He broke down the numbers to make his point clearer. A highly successful Pakistani drama, he said, typically earns around Rs 20 crore at its peak. Certain Indian series made for Netflix, on the other hand, are produced with budgets nearing Rs 40 crore. Yet, according to Quraishi, these productions still end up being measured against Pakistani dramas in terms of overall impact. He went further, pointing to viewership numbers as proof of this growing rivalry. Quraishi claimed that a single episode of a Pakistani drama often pulls in more YouTube views than an entire hit Netflix series combined. He said this reflects just how deeply Pakistani content has connected with audiences around the world. Quraishi also raised a pointed question about the relationship between the two industries. He asked why Indian streaming platforms have not made Pakistani dramas available on Netflix, if the two truly are not in competition. According to him, this hesitation comes from a deliberate push to protect and promote homegrown Indian content instead. Beyond his industry comparison, Quraishi shared a personal story to highlight just how far-reaching Pakistani dramas have become. He recalled sitting inside a cinema once, only to spot the person beside him watching a Pakistani drama on their phone. He added that a friend had told him a similar story, describing how commonly people now watch these dramas on mobile devices rather than television screens. Quraishi has built an extensive career in the Pakistani entertainment industry over the years. His body of work includes popular dramas such as Fitoor, Farq, Dil-e-Momin, and Khaie. He recently earned strong praise for his performance in Case No. 9, further reinforcing his reputation as one of the country’s most respected television actors.
