Bangladesh is preparing to begin formal discussions with China over a possible purchase of J-10CE fighter jets and attack helicopters according to a government adviser.

Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said Tuesday that a government committee is working on a draft agreement that could pave the way for negotiations with Beijing.

The potential deal would represent one of Bangladesh’s largest defence purchases in recent years and could further strengthen the country’s military relationship with China. Beijing is already Bangladesh’s biggest supplier of defence equipment.

The J-10CE fighter jet has received increased international attention since fighting between India and Pakistan in May 2025. Pakistan said its J-10CE aircraft were involved in shooting down Indian fighter jets during the clashes. India has disputed those claims.

Ur Rahman said Bangladesh had observed reports about the aircraft’s performance during the conflict as it considers options to modernise its air force.

Bangladesh is reportedly considering purchasing as many as 24 J-10CE fighter jets although officials have not confirmed the final number. Pakistan is currently the only confirmed foreign operator of the export version of the Chinese aircraft.

The adviser did not reveal how many jets Bangladesh could ultimately purchase the expected cost of the agreement or when deliveries might begin. Those details, he said, would be decided during negotiations.

The possible fighter-jet purchase comes as Bangladesh seeks to upgrade its military capabilities. The country has maintained close defence ties with China for years with Beijing supplying a wide range of military equipment.

Over the past two decades, China has provided Bangladesh with warships, fighter aircraft, tanks and missile systems, making it Dhaka’s largest source of military hardware.

If Bangladesh proceeds with the J-10CE acquisition, the move could further deepen defence cooperation between Dhaka and Beijing while giving Bangladesh a modern multirole fighter capable of performing air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

Pakistan has recently positioned itself as a key mediator in the US-Iran conflict and deepened its security partnership with Saudi Arabia, including the deployment of air-defence assets. However, the conflict has already strained Pakistan’s economy, with shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz driving up domestic petroleum prices amid high inflation. Textiles and apparel, a primary focus of the USTR’s forced-labour investigation, represent a significant portion of Pakistan’s exports to the US.     Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused the United States of violating the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, saying the agreement called for an end to the war, rather than a 60-day ceasefire that would require an extension. In an interview with ISNA, Araghchi said the memorandum declared an end to hostilities and blamed Washington for the subsequent resumption of fighting. He clarified that the 60-day period mentioned in the agreement referred to negotiations aimed at reaching a final settlement, not a temporary ceasefire. Araghchi said Qatar and Pakistan, which acted as mediators, continue to exchange messages with Tehran and remain in contact with Iranian officials. However, he stressed that Iran has not yet decided to resume negotiations with Washington. On the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said Iran and Oman were continuing discussions on its management. He described the issue as separate from the Islamabad MoU and said Iran was working on a temporary route that could eventually become permanent. Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi rejected US President Donald Trump’s claims about the Strait of Hormuz. Writing on X, Gharibabadi said Iran would not surrender control of the strategic waterway because of threats, military displays or political statements. He stressed that Iran does not fear US pressure and retains authority over the Strait.

    Man arrested over alleged assault of Bangkok woman

    A woman who was allegedly brought to Pakistan from Bangkok on the promise of marriage has accused a man of sexually assaulting her in Rawalpindi. Police said a case was registered at the Rawat police station on the woman’s complaint. The allegations have been included in the first information report (FIR) registered against the nominated suspect. According to the FIR, the woman met the suspect in Bangkok about two years ago. The two reportedly developed a friendship after their meeting. She later alleged that the suspect continued to remain in contact with her and promised to marry her. The woman stated that around four months ago, she came to Pakistan after being assured of marriage. She said the suspect arranged a rented apartment for her in a private housing society in Rawalpindi. She then began living at the apartment. According to her statement, the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted her on several occasions. She claimed that whenever she asked him to marry her, he avoided giving a clear response and continued to delay the matter. The woman also alleged that the suspect restricted her movement. She claimed that she was not allowed to leave the apartment freely. She further accused him of physically assaulting her during her stay there. The complainant also alleged that the suspect took her money when he left the apartment. She approached the police after the alleged incidents and requested legal action against the man. Police confirmed that the nominated suspect has been arrested. After the FIR was registered, the investigation was handed over to the relevant specialised investigation unit. Officials said the case is under investigation. Police are collecting evidence and examining the allegations made by the complainant. Further legal action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the investigation.
