Kareena Kapoor recalls sister Karisma’s painful early career

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor has opened up about the emotional challenges her elder sister, Karisma Kapoor, faced during the early years of her acting career, revealing that the journey was far more difficult than many people realized.

Speaking on a television reality show, Kareena reflected on Karisma’s struggles as she entered the film industry at a young age. She shared that despite belonging to the legendary Kapoor family, Karisma did not receive the support many would have expected. Instead, she encountered rejection and criticism from various quarters while trying to establish herself as an actress.

According to Kareena, several people in the film industry refused to work with Karisma when she was starting out. She also revealed that there was a period when even their father was unable to stand by her career decisions, leaving their mother to shoulder the responsibility of supporting both daughters through difficult times.

Kareena praised her mother for remaining strong and encouraging Karisma despite the emotional and professional obstacles the family faced. She said her mother never lost hope and constantly motivated Karisma to keep moving forward, even when circumstances seemed overwhelming.

Recalling those painful memories, Kareena said the hardships deeply affected Karisma emotionally. She remembered seeing her elder sister crying late at night after facing repeated disappointments. As a young child, Kareena would quietly watch from behind the curtains, witnessing the emotional toll those struggles had taken on her sister.

She added that people often underestimated Karisma and tried to discourage her, making her early years in Bollywood especially challenging. Kareena said watching her mother and sister endure those difficult moments taught her valuable lessons about resilience, determination, and the importance of family support.

The actress emphasized that although Karisma belonged to one of Bollywood’s most celebrated film dynasties, success did not come easily. She had to prove herself through hard work and perseverance rather than relying on her family name. Kareena said her sister’s journey remains an inspiring example of overcoming adversity through dedication and courage.

Karisma Kapoor made her Bollywood debut in 1991 at the age of 16 with Prem Qaidi. Despite facing criticism and setbacks during the initial phase of her career, she gradually established herself as one of the leading actresses of the 1990s. Over the years, she delivered several commercially successful and critically acclaimed performances, earning widespread recognition for her talent.

Kareena noted that looking back at those years fills her with admiration for both her sister and her mother. She believes their strength and determination played a significant role in shaping not only Karisma’s successful career but also her own outlook on life and the entertainment industry.

This is not the first time Kareena has spoken about her sister’s struggles. In an earlier interview, she also reflected on the emotional hardships Karisma experienced before achieving success, highlighting the sacrifices and determination that helped her become one of Bollywood’s most respected actresses.

Today, Karisma Kapoor’s journey is widely regarded as a story of perseverance, proving that talent, resilience, and unwavering family support can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Rain likely in Karachi from today till August 3

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Karachi from Saturday afternoon or evening until August 3 as a weather system continues to influence parts of Sindh. According to meteorologists, the intense low-pressure system that had developed over southern Madhya Pradesh has weakened further. It is now located near Rajasthan as a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to weaken further over the next 24 hours. Despite weakening, the system continues to draw monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the upper and central parts of Pakistan. At the same time, a westerly weather system is also affecting the country’s northern regions, creating favourable conditions for rainfall in several areas. The Met Office said Karachi is likely to receive rain with thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon or evening through August 3 under the influence of the weather system. Weather experts also forecast intermittent rain accompanied by dust storms and thunderstorms in Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mithi until August 3. Similar weather conditions are expected in Sanghar, Hyderabad and surrounding districts during the same period. The PMD warned that heavy rainfall could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allahyar. The department also cautioned that heavy rain, strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures. Farmers have been advised to plan their agricultural activities according to the changing weather conditions to avoid potential losses. For Karachi, the Met Office said the sky is expected to remain mostly cloudy during the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature is likely to reach around 36 degrees Celsius. During the past 24 hours, the minimum temperature recorded in the city was 29.5 degrees Celsius.

US authorises private firms to target cybercrime groups

WASHINGTON: The United States has taken an unusual step in its fight against international cybercrime by allowing selected private companies to conduct government-approved hacking operations against foreign criminal organisations. President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum directing the departments of Justice and Homeland Security to establish a framework under which approved private-sector partners can investigate, infiltrate and disrupt transnational cybercrime networks. The move is aimed at tackling growing threats including ransomware attacks, online fraud and so-called sextortion schemes. The White House said such crimes caused more than $20 billion in losses to Americans during 2025. Under the new framework, authorised companies could potentially infiltrate cybercriminals’ computer systems, deploy spyware or disrupt servers used to conduct criminal activities. However, each operation would require approval from the US government before any action is taken. Participating companies would also be required to provide a bond of at least $1 million. Operations involving actions that could cause death or physical injury would remain prohibited. Activities that could qualify as the use of force under international law would also be excluded. The initiative has drawn comparisons with privateering, a practice used centuries ago when governments authorised private vessels to attack or seize enemy ships. Supporters argue that private technology companies possess specialised cyber expertise and access to data that government agencies may not have. They believe combining those capabilities with government authority could help disrupt criminal networks more effectively. However, cybersecurity experts have raised concerns about accountability, oversight and the possibility of unintended consequences. Critics warn that allowing private companies to conduct offensive cyber operations could create diplomatic complications and make it difficult to control activities once they begin. The policy also represents a notable shift in the Trump administration’s previous position. Earlier this year, senior US officials had indicated that the government was not interested in using private companies to fight cybercriminals through offensive operations. It remains unclear what prompted the change in policy. Some cybersecurity specialists believe the programme contains important safeguards because operations will be conducted under government authorisation. Others remain concerned that existing oversight institutions may not be strong enough to monitor such activities effectively. The initiative could also expose participating technology companies to new risks. Experts warn that firms involved in government-sanctioned cyberattacks could become targets themselves and face retaliation from criminal groups or foreign governments. The Trump administration has 60 days to finalise the programme’s operational framework, while some details are expected to remain classified.
