BEIJING: Beijing was thrown into weather-alert mode on Wednesday as torrential rain linked to Typhoon Dolphin disrupted transport, closed tourist attractions and forced authorities to evacuate people from areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

The Chinese capital suspended 250 bus routes and ordered trains on 10 subway lines to operate at reduced speeds as heavy rain turned several roads into virtual rivers. Authorities also halted sightseeing boat services and temporarily closed tourist and camping sites, according to state media.

The downpour was part of a wider weather system generated by the remnants of Dolphin, the strongest typhoon to hit China this year. Although the storm weakened after making landfall, its vast moisture system continued moving inland, bringing intense rainfall to northern and central parts of the country.

Beijing’s Changping district recorded 90.7 millimetres of rain in just one hour after 9am on Wednesday, highlighting the intensity of the storm. Floodwaters left vehicles stranded and disrupted traffic on major roads.

Authorities moved residents from mountainous villages, low-lying communities and other locations considered vulnerable to flooding and geological disasters. More than 5,000 elderly people were also evacuated from care facilities as officials stepped up emergency preparations.

Construction work across thousands of sites was suspended, while reservoirs were releasing water in advance to create additional capacity for incoming rainfall.

The National Meteorological Center renewed an orange rainstorm alert, warning that heavy rain would continue across a broad area of China through Thursday morning.

The latest weather emergency has revived concerns over the growing impact of extreme rainfall and flooding in China. Scientists have increasingly linked more intense weather events to climate change, while the 2026 El Niño pattern is also contributing to warmer conditions and stronger tropical systems.

For Beijing residents, the immediate priority remains staying away from flooded roads, rivers and mountainous areas as authorities monitor rainfall and prepare for further disruption.

It urged all foreign correspondents to comply with the regulations governing reporting in other parts of the country. The AJK elections, however, remained under intense scrutiny after allegations of irregularities and isolated incidents of violence emerged during polling. Opposition parties accused authorities of interfering in the electoral process, while the ruling coalition exchanged allegations of rigging and misuse of state resources. Human rights organisations also expressed concern over reports of deaths and injuries linked to election-related unrest. They called for transparent and independent investigations into the incidents and stressed that maintaining public order should not come at the expense of fundamental rights, including peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. The elections were held against the backdrop of political unrest that has continued in AJK since last year’s protests over governance reforms and constitutional issues. The controversy surrounding reserved refugee seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly also remained a major political issue during the campaign.

    Japan backs stronger, deeper Pakistan partnership

    Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Akamatsu Shuichi has reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to further strengthening its longstanding relationship with Pakistan. In a message ahead of Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, the Japanese envoy conveyed greetings to the Pakistani government and people on behalf of Japan. Speaking in Urdu in a video message, Ambassador Shuichi highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries and expressed hope for deeper cooperation in the coming years. He noted that Pakistan and Japan will mark the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027. The ambassador said both countries would continue working as trusted partners to promote peace, development and stability. He also pledged to further strengthen friendly relations between Tokyo and Islamabad. Shuichi concluded his message by expressing confidence in the continued bond between the two nations and saying, “Japan-Pakistan Dosti Zindabad.” The ambassador’s message comes shortly after Pakistan and Japan signed a grant agreement worth 350 million Japanese yen, equivalent to around $2.2 million, to strengthen the Human Resources Development Scholarship Programme. The initiative, known as the JDS programme, will expand opportunities for Pakistani civil servants to receive postgraduate education and professional training in Japan. Under the agreement, 17 federal government officials will receive scholarships. Sixteen will pursue master’s degrees, while one official will undertake a PhD programme. Economic Affairs Secretary Muhammad Hameer Karim and Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi signed the Record of Discussions for the programme. Senior Joint Secretary Miran Mohiuddin Soomro and JICA Chief Representative Yusuke Shinazaki signed the grant agreement. The scholarship programme is expected to contribute to human resource development and strengthen institutional links between Pakistan and Japan.

His arrest in North Carolina demonstrates that investigators continued pursuing the case even after the suspect had left Maryland. Officials did not indicate that the incident was connected to Wallen or his performance itself.     HARYANA: Muskan, the 23-year-old wife of international Indian kabaddi player Shailu Ballhara, was found dead at her residence in the Indian state of Haryana in what police believe to be a suspected suicide, according to Indian media reports. The incident reportedly took place on Friday afternoon. Family members informed the police after discovering her unconscious at the house. Law enforcement officials, along with a forensic team, reached the scene soon afterward and began collecting evidence. Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials said the exact cause behind the suspected suicide has not yet been established, and investigators are examining all possible aspects of the case. According to Muskan’s family, she married Shailu Ballhara in December 2023. The couple welcomed their son, Hardik, in November 2025. Relatives said the family had been living together following the birth of their child. Investigators are also reviewing Muskan’s recent social media activity. Indian media reported that a day before her death, she shared a video featuring a sad Punjabi song, which has become part of the ongoing investigation.
