Bilawal urges Mirpur voters to support PPP in AJK …

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged the people of Mirpur to actively participate in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections.

Bilawal issued a video message along with his sister, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari. He addressed voters as polling continued across Mirpur Division.

Bilawal asked Kashmiris to come out of their homes and cast their votes. He said the people should use their democratic right to decide their future.

He urged voters to support PPP candidates by voting for the party’s arrow symbol.

Bilawal said the PPP believes that boycotting elections has never produced successful results. He therefore called on voters to take part in the electoral process instead of staying away from polling stations.

The PPP chairman said voters should participate if they want their rights to be protected. He specifically mentioned the right to governance and ownership.

He also called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission for Azad Kashmir.

Bilawal said the PPP wanted the people of Kashmir to have a strong voice in decisions affecting their future. He again urged voters to support the party and ensure their participation in the elections.

Meanwhile, polling is continuing in the first phase of the AJK Legislative Assembly elections.

Voting began at 8am and is scheduled to continue until 5pm.

The first phase covers 13 constituencies in Mirpur Division. The constituencies are located in the districts of Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber.

Polling has started at most stations. However, voting could not begin at polling stations 36 and 37 in Aghar Colony, Kotli, because voters had not arrived.

Officials are monitoring the polling process across the division. Authorities have also urged citizens to exercise their right to vote peacefully.

Mirpur Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz and Deputy Inspector General Kamran Ali visited wards 16 and 17 of LA-3. They reviewed the polling arrangements and assessed the situation at the polling stations.

Speaking to journalists, the commissioner said polling had been proceeding peacefully across all three districts since the morning.

He appealed to voters to leave their homes without fear and participate in the elections.

The commissioner assured citizens that the administration had made security and other necessary arrangements. He said voters would be provided with a peaceful environment to cast their ballots.

    DPM Dar boosts Pakistan-ADB partnership

    Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila on Wednesday to review the bank’s partnership with Pakistan and discuss ways to strengthen future cooperation. She questioned the process through which the policy was prepared and asked whether relevant stakeholders were taken on board before the policy was approved. The lawmaker argued that public policies affect millions of people and should be prepared after consultation with all important groups, including representatives of the people. She also questioned statements regarding the policy’s approval timeline, noting confusion about when the policy was actually introduced and approved. The issue created a debate inside the committee over the difference between the government’s authority to make policies and parliament’s responsibility to monitor their implementation. Committee Chairman Syed Rafiullah stated that making government policy falls under the authority of the government and the minister concerned. He said the role of the committee is to review, monitor and examine whether the policy is being implemented properly. She questioned whether a parliamentary committee should use the term for a senior government official who was being requested to attend a meeting. Officials clarified that the use of the word appeared to be a drafting mistake and that the actual intention was to invite the secretary to attend the meeting. The committee secretary explained that the official agenda mentioned the secretary was invited along with relevant officers to participate in discussions. The member insisted that official documents should use accurate wording because committee reports become public records and represent parliamentary proceedings. She said that drafting mistakes can confuse the powers and procedures of parliamentary committees. The meeting also witnessed a heated exchange between members over the issue, with the chairman asking members to follow the committee procedure and discuss matters according to their turn. The chairman advised members that disagreements should remain within the rules of parliamentary discussion and that the committee should continue its work in an organised manner.     Mirwaiz slams demand to end refugee seats in AJK

    Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly opposed calls to abolish the reserved legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan, saying the voting rights of displaced Kashmiris are protected by constitutional and democratic principles and must not be undermined. His remarks came after reports that a banned Action Committee had demanded the abolition of seats reserved for refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) legislative framework. The proposal has sparked debate and criticism from political and social circles on both sides of the Line of Control. In a statement, Mirwaiz said millions of Kashmiri refugees residing in Pakistan have a legitimate constitutional and democratic right to participate in the electoral process, adding that these rights cannot be ignored or sacrificed. “The voting rights of Kashmiri refugees are an integral part of their constitutional and democratic rights,” he said, stressing that displaced Kashmiris deserve equal respect, representation and protection. Mirwaiz argued that the rights of refugees are inseparable from the collective rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He maintained that any political movement claiming to represent Kashmiris must ensure equal representation for residents of every region and community without discrimination. He warned that protecting the interests of one group should never come at the cost of another group’s constitutional rights. According to the Hurriyat leader, justice, equality and mutual respect must remain the guiding principles in resolving issues affecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Calling for dialogue, Mirwaiz urged all stakeholders to engage in consultations and meaningful discussions to find a balanced and widely acceptable solution. He said consensus-based decision-making was essential to preserving unity and protecting the democratic rights of all Kashmiris. The statement also criticized attempts to alter the existing representation of Kashmiri refugees, arguing that such moves risk deepening divisions rather than strengthening democratic participation.
