    Fazlur Rehman urges dialogue to end AJK crisis

      Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has urged the federal government to address the ongoing unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) through dialogue, stressing that reconciliation is the only path to a lasting solution. In a video message shared on the party’s X account on Saturday, Fazlur Rehman called on the government and state institutions to recognise the seriousness of the situation instead of responding with force. He said authorities should work to restore peace and stability rather than allowing further bloodshed. “The government and state institutions must understand the gravity of the crisis. Instead of turning our homeland into a place of violence, they should focus on healing divisions through meaningful dialogue,” he said. His remarks came after violent clashes were reported in Rawalakot between law enforcement personnel and protesters affiliated with the banned Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Reports circulating on social media claimed multiple casualties and injuries, with both security officials and the JAAC alleging loss of lives. Fazlur Rehman said the JAAC’s sit-in had continued for more than two months. He recalled that after tensions intensified on June 5, the committee had formally requested him to mediate between the protesters and the government. According to him, he accepted the role and remained in contact with both sides through JUI-F AJK chief Maulana Saeed Yousaf Khan and Sardar Kamran Azam Khan. The JUI-F chief expressed concern over the situation faced by residents of AJK, saying people expect their government to protect them rather than leave them living in fear. He alleged that women, children and families had endured months of insecurity while the authorities failed to address their concerns. He further claimed that force had been used against unarmed protesters and alleged that, according to the information available to him, the death toll had reached around 80 people. However, no official confirmation has been issued regarding that figure. Despite the violence, Fazlur Rehman appealed to the JAAC leadership and protesters to remain peaceful and avoid any action that could worsen the situation. He urged them to allow more time for mediation efforts, expressing hope that a fair and lasting political settlement could still be achieved. He also criticised the government’s approach, claiming that although the protesters had shown confidence in his mediation efforts, the authorities had not taken the initiative seriously and had instead relied on force rather than negotiations. Warning of wider implications, Fazlur Rehman said the movement had gained support across Kashmir as well as among Pakistanis and the Kashmiri diaspora, particularly in Europe. The recent violence has drawn condemnation from political parties and human rights organisations. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed deep concern over reports of deaths and injuries, stressing that maintaining law and order should never come at the expense of the right to life or the freedoms of peaceful assembly and expression. The commission called for a prompt, impartial and independent investigation into the incidents. Opposition parties, including PTI, also demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the clashes, while other political groups criticised what they described as the excessive use of force against protesters. The current dispute is linked to long-standing demands by the JAAC, which has been seeking constitutional and governance reforms in AJK. Among its key demands are the abolition of 12 reserved seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly allocated to Kashmiri refugees and the removal of the existing quota system. Although the government and the JAAC reached an agreement after protests last year to establish a high-level committee to review the issue of refugee seats, negotiations have since stalled. The JAAC continues to insist on abolishing the reserved seats, while the government remains opposed to the proposal.

      LAHORE, Aug 12 (APP): Senior journalists, defence analysts and experts have described the Makkah Joint Defence Pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as a significant step towards regional peace, collective security and stronger defence cooperation. The views emerged during a panel discussion titled “Makkah Pact: Peace, Security and Stability”, organised by the Press Information Department (PID) Lahore. PID Lahore Director General Shafqat Abbas said the agreement aimed to strengthen peace, stability and mutual trust rather than target any country. He stressed the importance of diplomacy, dialogue and cooperation in resolving regional disputes. He said Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye brought different strengths and experiences to the partnership, creating opportunities for cooperation in defence, diplomacy, trade and investment. Abbas also said Pakistan’s national strength should extend beyond defence and include education, science, technology, skilled human resources and a strong economy. He urged the country to turn its defence capabilities into broader economic gains through research, skills development and increased exports. Senior journalist and analyst Mujeebur Rehman Shami highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in defence and diplomacy but called for greater investment in education, science, technology and skills. He also stressed the need to increase exports and improve economic productivity. Journalist Salman Ghani said the three countries offered complementary strengths, with Pakistan contributing its defence capabilities, Saudi Arabia its economic influence and Türkiye its advanced defence industry and technology. He said the pact could also encourage investment and economic cooperation. Defence analyst Col (retd) Abid said Pakistan’s leadership and military diplomacy played an important role in developing the agreement. He noted that its impact could extend beyond defence to economic, diplomatic and strategic affairs. Other speakers, including Dr Faleha Afzal, Malik Salman, Dr Farzana Riaz and journalist Noorullah, called for greater unity among Muslim countries and urged Pakistan to pursue economic development alongside defence preparedness. The participants agreed that stronger cooperation between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye could contribute to regional peace and stability. They also emphasised dialogue, common interests and coordinated efforts to address shared challenges. At the end of the session, Shafqat Abbas thanked the participants and said such discussions helped promote informed public debate on important national and international issues.

    More than ten firms have signed on to pay for Trump Media’s newly launched service that grants faster access to market moving posts published on its Truth Social platform, the company disclosed during an earnings call this week. The service, called Truth API, went live at the start of August and gives Wall Street traders early visibility into posts from the platform’s most influential accounts before the general public sees them. Interim chief executive Kevin McGurn said the earliest subscribers are largely high frequency trading firms, which pay between $60,000 and $100,000 a month for the access. McGurn detailed the pricing during a call held after Trump Media reported a net loss of $238 million for the April through June quarter, a figure more than ten times larger than the loss the company posted during the same period a year earlier. The steep quarterly loss comes as Trump Media and Technology Group has expanded into ventures far removed from its original media business, including cryptocurrency holdings. Despite still operating at a loss overall, the company says it intends to refocus on its core social media mission going forward. In July, the firm unveiled plans to offer Wall Street firms and institutional investors expedited access to posts on Truth Social, a platform where President Trump regularly shares public announcements. Critics have described the arrangement as a potential edge for subscribers looking to trade stocks and other actively traded assets ahead of market moving news. The initiative has also raised legal and ethical questions, particularly around the fact that a company in which the president’s family holds a majority stake could financially benefit from his own public statements reaching paying subscribers faster than the general public. In its earnings statement released Monday, Trump Media described the new offering as a service expected to generate a new revenue stream for the company. McGurn said executives believe the product will grow into a meaningful and durable source of income alongside the company’s broader media strategy, which already includes advertising and digital asset ventures. He added that Truth Media is also exploring potential partnerships with technology companies, news organizations and betting markets. The company reported revenue of $1.7 million for the quarter, an 89 percent increase compared with the same period last year, though the overall loss stemmed largely from declining cryptocurrency values. Trump Media said it closed the quarter holding total assets of $2 billion, including roughly $1.9 billion in financial assets made up of cash, short term investments and digital currencies. The firm continues to expand into new territory, including additional cryptocurrency holdings and clean energy investments. Markus Thielen, an analyst at 10x Research, described Trump Media as functioning more like a crypto holdings firm wrapped around a media company, noting that the bulk of its recent losses trace back to that crypto focused strategy. He said the company is working to diversify beyond its digital asset exposure into areas like social media services, though those newer ventures have not yet produced significant revenue.
