Cha Am squid pier to undergo urgent repair work

The ‘Cha Am squid pier’, one of the area’s best-known seafront landmarks, is set for urgent repair work after concerns were raised about the deteriorating condition of the rock embankment road and the area around the twin squid statues.

Cha-am Municipality inspected the site on May 1 after Mayor Nukul Pornsomboon was informed that parts of the embankment had become damaged and could pose a risk to tourists, anglers and other visitors.

The pier, formally known as Cha Am Fishing Pier Viewpoint, or Saphan Pla Cha Am, is widely recognised for the large twin squid statue at the end of the walkway. The landmark has become a popular photo spot and helped give the area its informal nickname as the “squid pier”.

The area is also regularly used by local residents and visitors for fishing. While some people try to catch squid from the pier, small coastal fish, groupers and sand whiting are more commonly caught there.

However, in recent years parts of the pier and surrounding embankment have fallen into a poor state of repair.

Municipality cordons off damaged section near Cha Am squid pier

Following the inspection, Cha-am Municipality has initially cordoned off the innermost section of the rock embankment to prevent cars from entering the damaged area.

Cars can still be parked outside the restricted zone, while motorcycles are currently allowed to enter and exit as usual. Riders have been advised to use extra caution when using the area.

The inspection was carried out by municipal executives and relevant departments, including Deputy Mayor Thawep Pin-niam, municipal councillor Eid, the Director of the Engineering Division and other officials.

The municipality said the visit was aimed at planning urgent restoration and repair work on the damaged sections.

The Saphan Hin Community Committee thanked Mayor Nukul and the municipal team for responding to concerns raised by the community.

Cha-am Municipality is expected to proceed with the repair work as quickly as possible.
