    ATC remands Mushtaq Ahmad for three days

    ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Monday granted police a three-day physical remand of former senator Mushtaq Ahmad and his associate, Daniyal, in a case linked to a protest over the recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The suspects were presented before Duty Judge Rukhsanda Shaheen after their arrest. During the hearing, the prosecution requested a 30-day physical remand, arguing that investigators needed additional time to recover a vehicle and alleged weapons connected to the case. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved a three-day remand instead of the longer period requested by the prosecution and directed police to continue their investigation. The case has been registered at Islamabad’s Shalimar Police Station. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the protest and the allegations associated with it. The development comes days after Mushtaq Ahmad’s supporters claimed he had been detained for more than 24 hours after security personnel stopped him from entering Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to his team, the detention was linked to his public support for protests taking place in the region.     Sindh assigns Rs8.5bn karachi projects to FWO

    The Sindh government has handed over four major infrastructure projects worth around Rs8.5 billion in Karachi to the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), with work on three of the projects scheduled to begin on the ground in August. One of the key projects involves the construction of a flyover or interchange near the Northern Bypass on the M-9 Motorway. The Sindh Local Government Department has started the process of obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the National Highway Authority (NHA) because the project will be built over the motorway. The new interchange aims to improve traffic flow between Jinnah Avenue and Malir Cantonment Road and the routes connecting Hyderabad and Sohrab Goth Vegetable Market with Jinnah Avenue. Once completed, the facility will allow motorists to cross between both sides of the motorway without taking lengthy U-turns. Authorities have estimated the cost of this project at Rs2.3 billion. The budget also covers the rehabilitation and beautification of Jinnah Avenue, which is expected to improve the overall appearance and connectivity of the area. Another major project will see the construction of a flyover at an intersection on the M-9 near Al-Asif Square, providing a direct link to Abul Hasan Isphahani Road. The project carries an estimated cost of Rs2.1 billion, and construction is expected to formally begin in August. The flyover will facilitate traffic arriving from different directions and is expected to ease congestion at one of the city’s busy intersections. The government has also included the rehabilitation and improvement of roads along the Hawksbay corridor. The project covers an 8.5-kilometre stretch from the Y Junction to Machli Chowk, as well as the road extending from Machli Chowk towards Kaka Pir. Authorities have estimated the combined cost of these works at Rs4.162 billion, with construction also scheduled to begin in August. In addition, the Sindh government plans to launch work on another major project at the Malir Halt Underpass soon. The initiative forms part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to upgrade Karachi’s road infrastructure, improve traffic movement and address congestion at key entry and exit points across the city.     The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast another spell of rain and thunderstorms in upper and central parts of the country from August 17 to 21. The weather system is expected to bring rain with strong winds and occasional heavy showers. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority said monsoon currents were continuing to move into the upper parts of the country. The Met Office also expects a westerly wave to reach northern areas on August 17, which could further strengthen the weather activity. Punjab is likely to receive rain and thunderstorms at intervals from August 16 to 21. Rawalpindi, Murree, Galyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad and Wazirabad are among the areas expected to be affected. Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Noorpur Thal may also experience showers and thunderstorms during the forecast period. Southern and central districts of Punjab are expected to see rain mainly on August 20 and 21. These areas include Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan. Authorities have warned that intense rainfall could trigger urban flooding in low-lying parts of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore between August 17 and 20. There is also a risk of landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas, particularly Murree and Galyat. Tourists and travellers have been advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of severe weather. Farmers have been asked to adjust agricultural activities according to the forecast and protect livestock from adverse weather conditions. The PDMA has instructed district administrations to strengthen emergency arrangements and prepare risk-mitigation plans. Officials have been directed to maintain round-the-clock staffing and coordinate closely with relevant departments for a quick response. Authorities have also been told to provide timely information about safety precautions and possible evacuation plans through electronic and social media platforms. Drainage systems are to be inspected, desilted and cleared before heavy rainfall. Heavy machinery is also being positioned at vulnerable locations where blocked drainage or flooding could create emergencies. Motorway Police have been directed to issue regular traffic and road-condition updates and guide motorists during the rainy spell.

    KP makes registration mandatory for street vendors

    PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has passed the Street Vendors Protection Bill 2026, making registration and vending certificates mandatory for people operating carts and roadside stalls across the province. The new law is expected to provide legal protection to more than 140,000 street vendors for the first time. Under the legislation, individuals aged 14 years and above will be eligible to register as street vendors. All vendors will be required to complete registration and obtain a valid vending certificate. Registered vendors will receive a modern digital vending certificate containing a QR code. The certificate is intended to formally recognise vendors and provide them with legal protection while carrying out their businesses. The law provides protection against unjustified eviction and harassment. Government employees found harassing street vendors could face strict departmental action. The legislation also introduces penalties for members of the public or shopkeepers who harass vendors. A person found guilty could face a fine of up to Rs20,000 or imprisonment for up to one month. Vendors will also have the right to appeal if their vending certificates are suspended or cancelled. The law prohibits vendors from selling or transferring their vending certificates to another person. Anyone violating this provision could face a fine of up to Rs3,000. The legislation also highlights the economic contribution of street vendors to the province. According to the bill, vendors collectively generate more than Rs380 billion in economic activity every year. The informal vending sector is estimated to contribute around Rs130 billion annually to the national economy. The government expects that better regulation and management of the sector could generate an additional Rs2.5 billion to Rs5 billion in annual revenue. The new legislation aims to bring the informal vending sector under a formal regulatory framework while providing vendors with legal recognition and protection.
