Don’t ignore shortness of breath

Feeling short of breath  while walking climbing stairs jogging or doing simple daily activities has become a common problem for people of all ages.

While it was once mostly seen in older adults many young people now experience it too.

Health experts say that if you often become short of breath you should not ignore it. Finding the real cause is important because it may be a sign of an underlying health problem.

One of the main reasons is a lack of physical activity. Many people spend hours sitting in front of their phones computers or TVs especially after meals.

Over time this inactive lifestyle can reduce fitness and make breathing more difficult during even light exercise.

Doctors explain that getting out of breath after only a little effort may sometimes be linked to problems with the heart lungs kidneys or liver.

Swelling around the eyes or face may point to liver disease swollen feet may be related to kidney problems and swelling in the hands feet and face together could be a sign of heart disease.

Instead of treating yourself at home it is important to see a qualified doctor.

Other common causes of shortness of breath include anemia (low blood) weakness asthma seasonal allergies colds cough mucus in the airways lung diseases and long term smoking.

Because every person is different only a proper medical check up can identify the real cause. In some people stomach problems such as gas and acid reflux can also make breathing feel difficult.

Sitting for a long time after eating may increase these problems causing chest discomfort and a feeling of breathlessness.

Eating a balanced diet exercising regularly and taking a short walk after meals may help improve digestion and overall health.

Some traditional remedies suggest soaking three dried figs in water overnight and eating them on an empty stomach in the morning to support digestion.

Others use basil leaves or basil seeds as an herbal drink.  However there is only limited scientific evidence to support these remedies so they should not replace proper medical treatment.

If you experience frequent shortness of breath especially with chest pain severe weakness dizziness blue lips or skin or swelling seek medical care immediately.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious health problems.

  • New image reveal Sun’s surface in amazing detail

Looking directly at the Sun is impossible and capturing a clear image of it is even more difficult. However, new images of the star at the center of our solar system have been released showing its surface in extraordinary detail. The images were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope located in the US state of Hawaii. It is considered the world’s most powerful solar telescope and is capable of observing the Sun in unprecedented detail. The telescope has captured images of the Sun before but these new photographs provide the most detailed views yet of the surface of our solar system’s star. A unique wing-like pattern can be seen across the Sun’s surface in the images. According to scientists, this pattern is associated with the Sun’s magnetic field which is moving in a wave-like manner due to hot gases. Closer look at Sun’s surface The images reveal processes occurring on the Sun’s surface that may help explain a decades-old mystery: why the Sun’s outer atmosphere known as the corona is millions of times hotter than its visible surface. Experts say these are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured. In earlier observations, the telescope detected sand-like structures on the Sun’s surface making it appear as though grains of sand were being viewed under a microscope. Each of these structures was roughly the size of France in terms of area but the new images reveal much greater detail. The new photographs show a distinctive pattern on the Sun’s surface associated with rapidly moving plasma. Scientists have identified this pattern as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs). Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities have been observed on Earth during the formation of patterns in lakes, oceans and clouds. They have also been detected on Jupiter and Saturn but their presence on the Sun had not previously been confirmed. Why Sun’s magnetic activity matters? Solar activity particularly changes in the Sun’s magnetic fields can affect power grids, satellites, GPS positioning and global communications on Earth. These magnetic fields are generated by the Sun’s extremely hot plasma but scientists have not yet fully understood how they work. Experts know that these magnetic fields can trigger sudden releases of enormous amounts of heat but exactly why this happens remains unclear. The new images, however, provide clues that could help explain why the Sun’s visible surface has a temperature of around 6,000°C while its outer atmosphere can reach temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius.

  • Childhood divorce linked to stroke risk

A new study suggests that people whose parents divorced during their childhood may have a higher risk of having a stroke later in life. The research, published in the journal PLOS One looked at data from more than 13,000 adults aged 65 and older. Researchers found that people whose parents divorced before they turned 18 were about 60% more likely to have experienced a stroke than those who grew up in families where their parents stayed together. Lead researcher Dr. Mary Kate Schilke, a psychology lecturer at Tyndale University in Toronto said the increased risk remained even after taking other factors into account including smoking low physical activity lower income and education levels. She said childhood parental divorce was still linked to a 61% higher risk of stroke in later life. A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.  It can cause brain damage long term disability or even death if not treated quickly. The researchers stressed that this was an observational study meaning it does not prove that parental divorce directly causes strokes. However childhood family stress may be connected to other health conditions that increase stroke risk such as depression diabetes smoking and obesity. Doctors say recognizing the warning signs of a stroke can save lives because early treatment is very important. Common stroke symptoms include. Sudden weakness or numbness in the face arm or leg especially on one side of the body. •Trouble speaking or understanding speech. •Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes. •Difficulty walking dizziness loss of balance or poor coordination. Experts say anyone with these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately as fast treatment can greatly improve recovery.

  • Ginger: A small root with big benefits

Ginger is a common ingredient used to add flavor to everyday meals. Although it looks like a simple root experts say it contains several natural compounds that may offer health benefits. Researchers have studied ginger for its possible effects on digestion inflammation cholesterol and blood sugar. Ginger comes from a plant in the Zingiberaceae family. It contains active compounds including gingerol which has antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties. Research published in the journal Molecules suggests that these properties may help reduce inflammation and protect the body from damage caused  by harmful molecules. May support digestion Ginger has been used for centuries to help with stomach and digestive problems.  Studies suggest that adding ginger to the diet may help reduce symptoms such as nausea stomach discomfort and bloating in some people. May help manage cholesterol Ginger has also been studied for its possible effect on cholesterol.  Keeping cholesterol levels within a healthy range is important for overall health. Some research including studies published in the Journal of Nutrition has examined whether ginger may help lower LDL, often called “bad cholesterol.” However more research is needed to fully understand its effects. May support healthy blood sugar Researchers have also looked at ginger and blood sugar control.  One study published in the Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research reported lower blood sugar levels among people with type 2 diabetes who consumed ginger regularly.  Some studies suggest that ginger may also help improve the body’s response to insulin. However it should not replace diabetes treatment or prescribed medicines. Possible Anti-Cancer properties The natural compounds in ginger are also being studied for possible anti-cancer effects.  Early laboratory research suggests that some compounds in ginger may slow the growth of certain cancer cells.  Research published in Gastroenterology has also explored these possible effects. However these findings are still being studied and more research is needed before firm conclusions can be made. Use ginger in moderation Although ginger may have several potential health benefits, consuming too much is not recommended. Ginger should not be considered a replacement for medical treatment. People who have a health condition or take regular medicines should speak with a doctor or qualified health professional before using large amounts of ginger or ginger supplements. Adding a reasonable amount of ginger to a balanced diet can be a simple way to enjoy its flavor and possible nutritional benefits

  • Azad Kashmir Elections: A Pilot Project or a Model for Pakistan’s Next General Elections?

By Engr. Saqlain Abid Political Commentator and NFPA-Certified Electrical Engineer   Elections are the vital organ of a living democracy. If they are conducted according to the people’s choice, without interference, on equal grounds, and with the consensus of all democratic participants, then the state not only remains in good health but also flourishes with the hope and commitment promised before the elections.   For the first time in the history of Pakistan, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections are not being held on a single polling day. Instead, the electoral process has been divided into three different phases—27 July, 8 August, and 20 August 2026. This unusual arrangement raises several important questions. Why is the state preparing this electoral model? What are the conditions on the ground that necessitated such a strategy? More importantly, how could this experiment influence Pakistan’s national elections next year?   The political environment surrounding these elections has already become highly contested. The major political force JAAC has been banned by the government, and several of its leaders have been detained. The party has consequently boycotted the elections. PTI, another major opposition force, has also chosen to boycott the electoral process. According to its leadership, the party has been forced to contest only through independent candidates rather than under its official party platform. PTI argues that the government has failed to provide the safety, guarantees, and political environment necessary for free and fair elections. Under such circumstances, the party believes participation would merely legitimize a process it does not trust.   On the other hand, the ruling coalition, led by PML-N and PPP, has entered the campaign with promises of development projects, including new motorways and business initiatives aimed at attracting voters. While development remains an important component of any election campaign, questions regarding electoral credibility continue to overshadow these promises.   In principle, elections should be transparent, efficient, and completed within the shortest possible time. If technological solutions such as secure online systems become feasible in the future, they may further reduce the chances of manipulation. However, extending the polling process over three different days also creates a debate. While supporters argue that it makes election management easier, critics believe that a prolonged process increases opportunities for allegations of interference and weakens public confidence.   The government should have taken all political parties on board before announcing such an unprecedented electoral model. A genuinely inclusive process requires the participation of every major democratic stakeholder. JAAC, which commands significant public support in parts of Azad Kashmir, should have been engaged through political dialogue rather than exclusion. The credibility of elections depends not only on voting day but also on the perception that every political voice has been given an equal opportunity to participate.   Pakistan has previously criticized India for conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir while sections of the local political leadership remained outside the process. At the time, Islamabad argued that elections held without broad political participation reflected only a procedural exercise rather than the genuine will of the people. The obvious question now is what circumstances have led Pakistan toward a model that some critics argue resembles the same approach.   Some political analysts believe that the AJK elections may serve as a pilot project to test a phased electoral model before its possible application across Pakistan during future general elections. Whether this perception is accurate or not, the debate itself demonstrates the level of public skepticism surrounding the process.   Another factor attracting attention is the role of the Chief Election Commissioner, whose tenure continues to face criticism following the February 2024 general elections. Allegations raised by former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha regarding manipulation of election results remain part of Pakistan’s political discourse, despite subsequent developments in the case. These controversies have inevitably shaped public perceptions regarding electoral transparency.   If voter turnout remains significantly low because of political boycotts and public distrust, the legitimacy of the exercise may come under further scrutiny. It is therefore the moral responsibility of the government and the Election Commission to create an environment where every democratic force feels secure enough to participate and where no stakeholder can reasonably question the fairness of the process.   The electoral process ultimately determines the political shelf life of a state. When governments emerge through elections widely accepted by the public, trust between the people and the state grows stronger. When that trust weakens, political polarization deepens, frustration increases, and hostile external actors find greater opportunities to exploit internal divisions. With Balochistan already facing serious security challenges and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confronting persistent instability, any controversy surrounding the AJK electoral process may further strengthen perceptions that democratic space is shrinking rather than expanding.   Ultimately, the success of these elections will not be measured solely by administrative efficiency but by whether the people of Azad Kashmir believe that their voices were freely heard and genuinely counted. A credible electoral process strengthens democracy; a disputed one risks weakening the very foundations upon which democratic legitimacy depends.
