Electricity bills to increase this month under new…

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a 75-paisa per unit increase in electricity prices for consumers across Pakistan, including domestic users of K-Electric. The revised tariff will be reflected in electricity bills issued during August 2026, according to an official notification released by the regulator.

The increase has been approved under the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for June 2026, a mechanism through which electricity tariffs are periodically revised to account for changes in fuel generation costs. The adjustment applies to electricity consumers served by power distribution companies nationwide, including those receiving electricity from K-Electric in Karachi.

According to the notification, consumers will pay an additional Rs0.75 per unit in their August electricity bills. The fuel cost adjustment is a routine regulatory measure designed to recover fluctuations in the cost of electricity generation caused by varying fuel prices and the overall energy mix used by power producers.

NEPRA stated that the revised charges are part of the monthly adjustment process and are intended to align electricity tariffs with the actual cost of power generation during the relevant period. The authority regularly reviews requests submitted by power distribution companies before approving any changes in consumer tariffs.

The latest increase comes as electricity consumers across Pakistan continue to face higher utility costs amid rising inflation and increasing household expenses. The adjustment will affect millions of residential, commercial, and industrial consumers, although the exact financial impact will depend on individual electricity consumption levels.

Domestic consumers in Karachi supplied by K-Electric will also be subject to the revised tariff, ensuring that the increase is implemented uniformly across the country. The notification confirms that the additional charges will be included in the current billing cycle for August.

Fuel cost adjustments are separate from the base electricity tariff and may result in either increases or reductions in monthly bills depending on changes in fuel prices and electricity generation costs. In recent years, these periodic revisions have become a regular feature of Pakistan’s electricity pricing system as regulators seek to recover actual power generation expenses.

Consumers are advised to review their upcoming electricity bills carefully to understand the impact of the latest tariff adjustment and any other applicable charges included in the monthly billing statement.

Ariana Grande chooses love over fame

Pop star Ariana Grande is reportedly looking forward to taking a break from the spotlight after completing her Eternal Sunshine Tour, with plans to spend more time with family, close friends and her reported partner Ricky Alvarez. According to media reports, Grande’s demanding schedule of concerts, rehearsals and other professional commitments has left little room for her personal life over the past several months. Sources close to the singer say she is eager to enjoy uninterrupted time with the people closest to her once the tour concludes. Grande and Ricky Alvarez previously dated between 2015 and 2016 after he joined her as a backup dancer. Representatives for the singer have also confirmed that Grande intends to step back from public appearances after the tour ends. The decision comes amid growing public discussion about her health and well-being. According to her spokesperson, the singer hopes to finish the tour on a positive note before taking a well-earned break from public-facing work. The statement added that the pause will allow her to focus on her health and enjoy time away from constant public attention. As part of her planned hiatus, Grande has also withdrawn from the upcoming West End revival of Sunday in the Park with George, a production that would have reunited her with Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey. The announcement follows the release of her eighth studio album, Petal, which sparked widespread discussion online after some fans expressed concern about her appearance in the music video’s lead single. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Tipu Usman, has urged the international community to play a more proactive role in resolving the Kashmir dispute, declaring that “justice for Kashmir begins with implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions” and reaffirming that Pakistan’s support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir “remains unwavering and unconditional.” He was addressing a seminar organised by the Pakistan High Commission in London to observe Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir, marking the anniversary of India’s August 5, 2019 decision to revoke the special status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The event brought together British parliamentarians, diplomats, community leaders and members of the British Pakistani and Kashmiri diaspora, who condemned India’s revocation of Article 370 and reiterated support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. In his keynote address, Tipu Usman called upon the international community, particularly the United Kingdom, to stand on the side of justice by urging India to reverse the unilateral measures introduced on August 5, 2019, restore the rights and special status of Jammu and Kashmir, and honour the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. “Pakistan’s support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir remains unwavering and unconditional,” he said, adding that a peaceful and lasting settlement of the dispute must be achieved in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people as reflected in the UN resolutions. The seminar was attended by Lord Qurban Hussain, Baroness Nosheena Mobarik, Afzal Khan MP and Adnan Hussain MP, alongside prominent community figures including Councillor Yasmine Dar, UK-Pakistan Kashmiri Councillors Forum Chairman Liaqat Ali MBE, Jammu Kashmir Self Determination Movement International Chairman Raja Najabat Hussain and former Deputy Mayor of Peterborough Mohammad Nadeem. Speakers strongly criticised India’s constitutional changes of August 2019, describing them as illegal and unconstitutional. They expressed concern over the human rights situation in IIOJK and called for an immediate end to alleged rights violations. Participants stressed that the Kashmir dispute remains an internationally recognised issue that should be resolved through dialogue and in line with UN Security Council resolutions. The seminar also proposed a strategic roadmap to enhance engagement with policymakers, parliamentarians and international stakeholders to build support for a just and lasting resolution of the Kashmir dispute. Messages from the President of Pakistan, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister were read out during the event, reiterating Pakistan’s continued diplomatic, political and moral support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The ceremony concluded with participants observing a minute’s silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the Kashmir conflict.

England name 16-man squad for first two Tests against Pakistan

England have unveiled their 16-member squad for the first two Tests of their three-match series against Pakistan, with Joe Root set to lead the side after Ben Stokes’ retirement. The first Test will begin on August 19 at Headingley in Leeds, marking the start of what promises to be a closely watched series between the two sides. Root has been handed the captaincy once again following Stokes’ retirement, placing the experienced batter at the centre of England’s plans against Pakistan. England have also welcomed back several familiar faces. Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Brydon Carse and Sam Cook have returned to the squad, adding experience and depth to the team. However, England will be without Jacob Bethell, who has been ruled out of the Pakistan series because of a right knee injury. With Root back in charge and several key players returning, England will look to make a strong start at Leeds before the teams move on to the second Test. Sindh orders three-year appointment of Qaim Ali Sh…

The Sindh government has directed Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) to take immediate steps for the three-year appointment of Professor Dr Nighat Shah, daughter of former Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah, just one day before her scheduled retirement. The directive was issued following a decision of the Sindh Cabinet. Secretary of the Boards and Universities Department Abbas Baloch has also issued a formal notification in this regard. According to the notification, the provincial cabinet discussed the matter during its meeting held on August 5 under agenda item 16. The cabinet cited the broader public interest, continuity of specialised medical services, academic leadership, postgraduate medical education, research, innovation and institutional standards as reasons for considering the appointment. The notification initially states that the vice chancellor should consider appointing Dr Nighat Shah as a professor for three years. However, it subsequently directs the university administration to take immediate steps to process her three-year appointment. The university has also been instructed to implement the cabinet decision without delay and submit a report on the action taken to the Boards and Universities Department on a priority basis. The appointment has raised questions because the government has referred to a notification issued by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on May 19, 2026. The PMDC had allowed public medical and dental institutions to hire retired faculty members on a purely contractual basis until the age of 65. However, the council had clarified that the policy was enabling in nature and was not mandatory for any institution. Under the PMDC policy, individual institutions were allowed to make decisions according to their requirements, rules, regulations and available resources. The PMDC notification also stated that contractual appointments of retired faculty would not create any right to permanent employment, seniority or absorption into the regular cadre. It further clarified that such appointments should not adversely affect the promotion opportunities, career progression or cadre structure of junior faculty members. The case has therefore raised questions about the need for the provincial cabinet to intervene in the appointment of a particular retired faculty member when the PMDC policy leaves the decision to individual institutions. The PMDC notification is a general policy applicable to public medical and dental institutions. It does not specifically direct any institution to appoint an individual faculty member. The proposed appointment has also triggered concerns over seniority within JSMU. Associate professors Dr Shazia Naseeb, Dr Nasreen Fatima, Dr Saba Khan, Dr Iram Majid and Dr Maimoona Rehman are reportedly among those whose seniority could be affected by Dr Nighat Shah’s appointment. The issue is likely to attract further attention because the proposed appointment comes immediately before Dr Nighat Shah’s retirement. Questions are also being raised about how the decision could affect existing faculty members and their career progression.
