England and women’s ashes 2027 schedule announced amid debate over northern venues

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially revealed the schedules for the men’s and women’s Ashes series in 2027, with both competitions set to take place in England during the summer. The men’s Ashes series will begin on June 18 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, while the women’s Ashes campaign will start six days later with a one-off Test match at Headingley in Leeds on June 24.

The announcement has created controversy because no men’s Ashes Test match has been scheduled in the north of England, despite the region’s long and historic connection with the rivalry. Famous cricket venues such as Headingley and Manchester’s Old Trafford have been excluded from the 2027 men’s series, a decision that has attracted criticism from several figures in English cricket.

Both Headingley and Old Trafford have played important roles in Ashes history and have witnessed some of the greatest moments in the sport. Headingley was the stage where Australia’s legendary batter Don Bradman produced two memorable triple centuries during the 1930s. The ground has also hosted some of England’s most iconic performances, including Ian Botham’s remarkable displays during the 1981 Ashes series.

More recently, Headingley became famous worldwide after Ben Stokes produced an unforgettable unbeaten century in 2019, guiding England to a dramatic one-wicket victory over Australia. Old Trafford, meanwhile, has also been the setting for many historic Ashes battles and has traditionally been considered one of England’s most important cricket grounds.

The absence of northern venues from the 2027 schedule has been criticised by former England captain Michael Atherton. Writing in The Times, Atherton questioned the decision and described it as disappointing that the north had been overlooked. He pointed out the timing of the announcement, coming when greater political attention is being given to expanding opportunities and investment outside London and the south-east.

The entire five-Test men’s Ashes series in 2027 will now be played across venues in the Midlands and southern England. Trent Bridge will host the opening Test from June 18, followed by the second Test at Lord’s in London from June 30. The third match will take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 8, while Hampshire’s Rose Bowl near Southampton will host its first-ever Ashes Test from July 21. The series will finish with the fifth Test at The Oval in south London, beginning on July 29.

The Rose Bowl will become the 10th venue in the United Kingdom to stage a men’s Ashes Test match. Meanwhile, Headingley and Old Trafford are expected to return to the Ashes schedule in 2031.

Australia currently holds the Ashes after securing a dominant 4-1 victory on home soil during the 2025/26 series. The previous Ashes contest in England ended in a closely fought 2-2 draw in 2023. England’s most recent Ashes triumph came in 2015, when they won the home series 3-2.

Before the Ashes begins, England are scheduled to face Bangladesh in a one-off Test match at Lord’s starting on May 28. The Oval will also host the 2027 World Test Championship final from June 9, marking the second time the famous ground has staged the event.

As part of their preparation for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in southern Africa, England will also play 10 One-Day Internationals, including five matches against New Zealand and five against Pakistan. The busy schedule promises a major summer of international cricket, although the decision to exclude northern England from the men’s Ashes fixtures is likely to remain a subject of debate among fans and former players.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino withdraws FIFA forward enterprise proposal

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially announced the withdrawal of the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative after facing significant opposition from stakeholders, saying the project no longer serves the best interests of global football. In an official statement, Infantino confirmed that the FIFA Forward proposal has been formally abandoned and that no further work or discussions will be carried out regarding the initiative. “The FIFA Forward project has officially come to an end, and there will be no further progress on the proposals,” Infantino said. According to the FIFA president, the plan—which was linked to broader investment ideas surrounding the FIFA World Cup—had become increasingly divisive within the international football community. Rather than bringing football stakeholders together, the proposal had created disagreement among member associations and other interested parties. Infantino acknowledged that the growing differences of opinion convinced FIFA’s leadership that continuing with the project would not benefit the sport. “The World Cup investment proposal has led to divisions within football, and it is no longer in the game’s best interests to continue pursuing it,” he stated. He emphasized that the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative was always intended to move forward only if it received the support of a clear majority of FIFA’s member associations. Since that level of consensus was no longer evident, FIFA decided to discontinue the proposal altogether. “The project was always dependent on the backing of the majority of FIFA’s member countries,” Infantino explained. “After carefully listening to the views and concerns expressed by all parties involved, we have concluded that the proposal should not proceed.” The FIFA president stressed that the decision reflected the organization’s commitment to consultation, transparency, and unity within world football. He said FIFA had taken into account the opinions of national football associations, confederations, and other stakeholders before reaching its final conclusion. Infantino reiterated that FIFA’s primary objective has always been to strengthen the global game rather than create unnecessary disagreements. “Our mission has always been to promote unity and improve football around the world,” he said. “That commitment remains unchanged, and we believe this decision is in the best interests of the sport.” Looking ahead, Infantino expressed hope that all stakeholders would once again work together to address the challenges facing international football. He said FIFA intends to bring all relevant parties back to the negotiating table to explore new ideas and initiatives that enjoy broader support across the football community. “We will continue engaging with all stakeholders to find common ground and develop solutions that benefit football globally,” he said. Despite shelving the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, Infantino assured member associations that FIFA remains fully committed to supporting football development, particularly in countries where additional investment and infrastructure are needed. He emphasized that expanding access to the sport, improving facilities, and creating opportunities for young players around the world will remain central to FIFA’s long-term strategy. “Our mission to promote and develop football in countries that need greater support will continue,” Infantino concluded. “We remain committed to investing in the future of the game and ensuring that football continues to grow in every region of the world.” The decision marks a significant shift in FIFA’s strategic planning and underscores the organization’s willingness to reconsider major initiatives when they fail to achieve broad consensus among its global membership.

Punjab University sports management faces backlash…

Punjab University’s sports management has come under scrutiny after imposing one-year bans on players, coaches, managers, and team officials, a decision that has sparked debate among the university’s sports community. Critics have questioned whether disciplinary measures of this nature represent the right approach toward promoting sports development at one of Pakistan’s leading educational institutions. They argue that the primary responsibility of sports administrators should be to support athletes, improve training facilities, resolve issues, and create a positive environment for sporting growth. Concerns have also been raised over the involvement of some officials in administrative and internal matters rather than focusing solely on strengthening sports programs and addressing athletes’ concerns. A video circulating on social media has further fueled discussion, showing university officials participating in a bhangra performance with students, with critics questioning whether the department’s priorities are aligned with its core responsibilities. Sports circles have called for a balanced approach, emphasizing transparency, athlete welfare, and constructive management practices to ensure that disciplinary actions contribute to improvement rather than discouraging participation in university sports.
