Critics have questioned whether disciplinary measures of this nature represent the right approach toward promoting sports development at one of Pakistan’s leading educational institutions. They argue that the primary responsibility of sports administrators should be to support athletes, improve training facilities, resolve issues, and create a positive environment for sporting growth.

Concerns have also been raised over the involvement of some officials in administrative and internal matters rather than focusing solely on strengthening sports programs and addressing athletes’ concerns.

A video circulating on social media has further fueled discussion, showing university officials participating in a bhangra performance with students, with critics questioning whether the department’s priorities are aligned with its core responsibilities.

Sports circles have called for a balanced approach, emphasizing transparency, athlete welfare, and constructive management practices to ensure that disciplinary actions contribute to improvement rather than discouraging participation in university sports.

The report said regional mediators are working behind the scenes to create space for diplomacy after days of intense hostilities between Washington and Tehran. The proposed ceasefire aims to temporarily halt military operations, restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and open the door for renewed negotiations. According to sources familiar with the mediation efforts, the proposal has been shared with both governments, but officials in Washington and Tehran have so far withheld their approval. Diplomats say both countries appear determined to strengthen their military positions before considering any pause in fighting. The report added that US President Donald Trump is weighing two key options. The first is to endorse a limited 10-day ceasefire that could reduce regional tensions and revive diplomatic talks. The second involves expanding military operations alongside Israel in an effort to increase pressure on Iran and force concessions over security and nuclear issues. US officials quoted in the report said no final decision has been made, adding that developments over the coming days are expected to determine Washington’s next move. Despite several days of military operations, the report noted that the United States and Israel have not succeeded in eliminating Iran’s influence over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supplies passes. Analysts warn that any prolonged disruption in the waterway could have serious consequences for global energy markets. The report also highlighted growing domestic pressure on the Trump administration as rising fuel prices in the United States fuel public concern over the economic cost of continued military action. Diplomatic momentum reportedly suffered a setback after two American soldiers were killed in an Iranian missile attack in Jordan over the weekend. Following the incident, Washington is said to have adopted a tougher stance while continuing diplomatic contacts. A senior US official confirmed that backchannel discussions remain active but stressed that the United States intends to respond to the deaths of its troops. The official added that military operations could continue for as long as President Trump considers necessary.     Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed all relevant ministries and institutions to ensure the timely implementation of targets and deadlines under the government’s privatisation programme, stressing the need for close coordination to complete the process according to schedule. The directives were issued during a meeting held to review progress on the privatisation of state-owned enterprises. The meeting was informed that a total of 27 public sector organisations have been included in the government’s privatisation agenda, which is being carried out in three phases. During the briefing, officials updated the prime minister on the progress of the privatisation of Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi airports, as well as several major public sector entities. The meeting also reviewed the privatisation process of electricity distribution companies, including the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), and Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO). Officials informed the prime minister that Expressions of Interest (EOIs) have already been invited for all three companies. The deadline for investors to submit documents for FESCO has been set for August 7, while submissions for GEPCO will close on August 21. The deadline for IESCO is September 7, 2026. The briefing noted that several international companies have expressed interest in acquiring the power distribution companies. Officials added that roadshows and engagement sessions with potential investors are continuing to attract further investment. Prime Minister Shehbaz also reviewed the proposed privatisation of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) and directed authorities to design the transaction in a way that preserves the bank’s vital role in supporting Pakistan’s agricultural sector. He emphasised that the bank should continue providing agricultural loans and financial services to farmers even after privatisation. The prime minister said farmers’ access to financial resources is essential for increasing crop yields and improving agricultural productivity. He further stated that agriculture remains a key pillar of Pakistan’s economy and plays a critical role in ensuring food security. Therefore, any privatisation model should safeguard the sector’s long-term interests while maintaining uninterrupted financial support for farmers.
