Faysal Quraishi says Fahad Sheikh backlash has crossed a line

Actor Faysal Quraishi believes it is time to move past the controversy surrounding Fahad Sheikh, who publicly apologized on Wednesday after being accused of disrespecting veteran actor Mohammed Ahmed on set.

In a reel shared on his Instagram account, Quraishi explained why he initially spoke up. As a member of the Actors Collective of Pakistan and part of its executive committee, he said supporting fellow actors during difficult moments is part of what the association stands for. He wanted to make sure Ahmed did not feel alone after the incident came to light.

Quraishi admitted he had not known who was involved when the video first surfaced, but felt strongly that such matters are usually best settled between colleagues. He pointed out that sets often involve joking around and lighthearted banter, and that most issues get resolved internally rather than spilling into public view. In this case, though, things had already escalated before the industry could address it privately.

He acknowledged that Sheikh choosing to admit fault and apologize publicly took courage. At the same time, he felt the public reaction had gone far beyond what was reasonable. According to Quraishi, criticism is understandable when someone makes a mistake, but attacking a person’s family or children crosses a line that should never be acceptable.

He maintained that the issue was ultimately between Ahmed and Sheikh, and urged everyone else to let the situation settle down.

Filmmaker Shamoon Abbasi echoed a similar message in a video posted on Facebook, calling for patience and forgiveness now that Sheikh had apologized. He noted that owning up to the mistake within a day of the controversy breaking was a positive step, and warned that continued backlash risked becoming unfair.

Abbasi said he found it strange that people began targeting young actors broadly, even without knowing who was actually responsible. Based on his own experience working with several of them, he described most as respectful professionals who value their seniors.

He also mentioned that accounts of what happened on set varied, with some suggesting Ahmed had taken part in the joking too, while others close to the set said Ahmed remained upset the next day.

Drawing a comparison, Abbasi referenced how actress Meera handled an uncomfortable interview earlier this year, where she was asked inappropriate questions by a journalist. Instead of reacting harshly, she calmly redirected the conversation and left with composure, which Abbasi said earned her public admiration.

He concluded that Sheikh had already apologized, and it was time for everyone to move forward.

Gold prices hold near two-month high as traders await US PPI data

Gold prices remained largely stable near their highest level in more than two months on Thursday, as investors paused to assess the metal’s recent gains following softer-than-expected signals from US inflation data. Spot gold was trading at around $4,408.55 per ounce by 0336 GMT, little changed from the previous session. The precious metal had earlier climbed nearly 1%, reaching its highest level since June 5. Meanwhile, US gold futures for December delivery were broadly steady at $4,467 per ounce. The latest movement came after gold staged a strong rally following the release of US consumer inflation figures. Investors are now turning their attention to the US Producer Price Index (PPI), due later on Thursday, which could provide further indications about the direction of monetary policy and interest rates. Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, said gold was undergoing a period of consolidation after its gains following the consumer price data. He noted that expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike had weakened further, while traders were waiting for the PPI report before making significant new moves in the market. US Inflation Cools Market sentiment was influenced by Wednesday’s US Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures, which showed that inflation moderated for a second consecutive month on an annual basis. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices increased 3.4% in the 12 months through July, compared with a 3.5% rise in June. The reading was broadly in line with economists’ expectations. The data reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve would move toward higher interest rates in the near term. Market participants are now closely monitoring incoming economic indicators to determine whether price pressures are continuing to ease. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders were pricing in roughly a 40% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September meeting, down from approximately 54% a week earlier. Lower Rate Expectations Support Gold Gold generally benefits when expectations for interest rates decline because lower rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding precious metal. The shift in expectations has therefore provided additional support to bullion, although investors remain cautious ahead of further inflation data. The upcoming PPI report is expected to play an important role in determining whether the recent moderation in consumer inflation is also reflected at the producer level. A weaker-than-expected reading could further reinforce expectations for a less aggressive Federal Reserve stance, potentially providing additional momentum to gold. Conversely, stronger producer inflation could revive concerns about persistent price pressures and limit gains in the precious metals market. Geopolitical Risks Remain in Focus Investors are also keeping an eye on geopolitical developments, particularly tensions between Iran and the United States. A senior Iranian source said Tehran and Washington remained divided over efforts to reach a permanent agreement to end the conflict in the Gulf. According to the source, there had been no significant progress in negotiations aimed at reviving an interim agreement reached in June. Continued geopolitical uncertainty can contribute to demand for safe-haven assets such as gold, although market participants remain focused primarily on monetary policy and economic data. Other Precious Metals Elsewhere in the precious metals market, spot silver rose around 0.3% to $65.47 per ounce. Silver had reached its highest level since June 22 during the previous session. Platinum prices declined 0.4% to $1,749.70 per ounce, while palladium fell 0.5% to $1,362.10.

Norway’s Foreign Minister arrives in Islamabad f…

ISLAMABAD: Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for an official two-day visit, marking the first visit by a Norwegian foreign minister to Pakistan in a decade and opening a fresh chapter in bilateral engagement. Eide, who is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, was received at Islamabad International Airport by Additional Foreign Secretary for Europe Ambassador Ayesha Ali. He later held a meeting with Dar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the two sides are expected to discuss a broad range of issues concerning Pakistan-Norway relations. According to the Foreign Office, Eide’s visit will continue through August 14 and include delegation-level talks between the two countries. The discussions are expected to focus on areas where Islamabad and Oslo see potential for stronger cooperation. Trade and investment will be among the key subjects, while climate change, renewable energy and education are also expected to feature prominently in the talks. The two sides will additionally explore ways to strengthen people-to-people contacts. The visit comes at a time when Pakistan is seeking to deepen economic and diplomatic partnerships with European countries, particularly in areas linked to investment, clean energy and sustainable development. Beyond bilateral matters, the foreign ministers are also expected to exchange views on important regional and international developments. This could give the two sides an opportunity to discuss shared concerns and assess developments affecting the wider region. The Foreign Office said the visit builds on a series of high-level contacts between Pakistan and Norway in recent months. Dar and Eide held telephone conversations in March and April, while Norwegian State Secretary Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik visited Islamabad in May. The two countries have also maintained engagement through diplomatic channels, with both sides showing interest in expanding cooperation beyond traditional areas. Eide’s arrival therefore carries significance not only because of its timing but also because of the gap since the last visit by a Norwegian foreign minister. The trip provides an opportunity to translate recent diplomatic contacts into practical cooperation. For Islamabad, stronger ties with Norway could bring opportunities in trade, investment, renewable energy and education. For Oslo, deeper engagement with Pakistan offers a chance to strengthen relations with an important South Asian partner. The Foreign Office described the visit as an opportunity to further strengthen the “longstanding and cordial relations” between the two countries and identify new areas of mutually beneficial cooperation. With formal talks now underway, attention will turn to whether the two-day visit produces concrete initiatives that can give Pakistan-Norway relations fresh momentum.

Brad Pitt responds as children continue dropping ‘Pitt’ surname

Hollywood star Brad Pitt has spoken publicly for the first time about several of his children choosing to remove “Pitt” from their surnames, saying he understands their decision as the family continues to deal with the fallout of his long-running split from ex-wife Angelina Jolie. His remarks came after weeks of renewed attention surrounding the legal name changes of several of the couple’s children. The issue resurfaced after Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, 18, filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court to legally change her name to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie, citing “personal” reasons. She joins siblings Shiloh, Zahara and Maddox, who have either legally dropped or publicly stopped using the Pitt surname in recent years. According to reports, Pitt addressed the matter during a recent press interaction, acknowledging his children’s choice and expressing support despite the emotional toll it has taken on him. “I understand,” Pitt said when asked about the surname changes. He added, “And if they don’t want it, neither do I.” The Oscar-winning actor continued, “I want them to know that I stand with them as they bravely turn the page on the hell I put them through.” The remarks marked the first time Pitt has publicly commented on the issue since multiple children moved to distance themselves from his surname. Sources present at the event said the actor appeared emotional while discussing the situation. Pitt reportedly admitted it was painful to realise that some of his children no longer wished to be associated with his name. Reflecting on their decision, he said, “So when they decide that being associated with me is just an unacceptable way to live the rest of their lives.” Despite his disappointment, Pitt stressed that he respected their choice. “That’s what being a dad’s all about,” he said, adding that he offered his “100%” support to Shiloh, Zahara, Maddox and Vivienne as they move forward with their decisions. Pitt and Jolie finalised their divorce in December 2024, ending years of legal proceedings that began after Jolie filed for divorce in 2016. Since then, reports have consistently described a strained relationship between Pitt and several of the couple’s six children. The family rift has often been linked to an alleged altercation aboard a private plane in 2016, after which Jolie initiated divorce proceedings. While the actor had largely remained silent on the matter, reports suggested he had intentionally kept his distance from the public discussion to avoid escalating tensions within the family. On the same day his comments emerged, Pitt was photographed spending time with his girlfriend, Ines de Ramon, in Carmel Highlands, California. The couple, who have reportedly been together since November 2022, appeared relaxed during the outing despite continued public interest in Pitt’s relationship with his children. The surname changes continue to attract widespread attention, reflecting the ongoing estrangement within one of Hollywood’s most closely watched families. Pitt’s latest remarks suggest he is choosing acceptance over confrontation as his children make deeply personal decisions about their identities.

Middle East braces for intense heatwave as tempera…

DUBAI: A fresh wave of extreme heat is set to grip the Middle East this week, with temperatures forecast to approach 50 degrees Celsius across several countries, prompting weather authorities to issue alerts over dangerous conditions. The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has warned that the coming days will bring soaring temperatures across the region, particularly affecting the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Kuwait, and eastern Saudi Arabia, where prolonged exposure to the heat could pose serious health risks. According to meteorologists, desert regions in the UAE are expected to experience the highest temperatures, with some areas likely to approach the 50°C mark. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours and to remain well hydrated. The latest forecasts indicate that Al Shawamekh in Abu Dhabi has already recorded temperatures exceeding 50°C, highlighting the intensity of the current weather conditions. Kuwait is also expected to experience extreme heat, with temperatures predicted to reach 48°C in the coming days, while parts of Iraq and eastern Saudi Arabia are likely to face similarly scorching conditions. Despite the widespread heat, forecasters say some eastern and southern parts of the UAE, including Fujairah, could receive rainfall by Thursday as unstable weather develops over mountainous regions. The weather authority has also issued warnings for strong winds, reduced visibility, and dust storms, which may affect road travel and outdoor activities across several parts of the region. Health experts advise people to stay indoors whenever possible, drink plenty of water, wear light-colored clothing and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during midday when temperatures are expected to peak. The renewed heatwave follows a summer of record-breaking temperatures across several parts of the world, with climate scientists warning that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense due to global climate change. Governments across the Gulf have increasingly introduced measures to protect workers and residents during the hottest months, including restrictions on outdoor labor during peak daytime hours and expanded public awareness campaigns on heat-related illnesses. As the latest heatwave builds across the region, authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely while urging the public to follow official safety advisories. With temperatures expected to remain exceptionally high over the coming days, residents are being encouraged to take extra precautions to minimize the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

China voices concern over new US trade curbs

BEIJING: China has raised strong concerns over the latest US trade restrictions, urging Washington to strengthen dialogue and maintain stable economic relations as both countries continue efforts to manage trade tensions. Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng expressed Beijing’s concerns during a video conference with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, according to Chinese state media. During the talks, both sides held detailed discussions on implementing the agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries. The officials also exchanged views on maintaining stable economic and trade ties, expanding practical cooperation and addressing each other’s concerns through continued engagement. Beijing criticized the latest US trade measures, including the recently announced 12.5% tariff on Chinese imports, describing them as a source of concern for bilateral economic relations. Despite the differences, both sides agreed to continue using the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism to improve communication, strengthen mutual trust and reduce misunderstandings. They also pledged to expand cooperation and support the stable development of bilateral trade relations. The discussions come ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to the United States later this year, a meeting widely seen as an opportunity to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Earlier agreements between Beijing and Washington included China’s commitment to address US concerns over the supply of rare earth minerals and related processing technologies. China also agreed to increase purchases of US agricultural products through 2028 as part of broader efforts to stabilize trade relations. The latest talks indicate that while differences remain over tariffs and trade policies, both governments continue to pursue diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation in economic disputes.
