QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring merit and transparency in public-sector recruitment, as 19 officers were appointed to the Balochistan Revenue Authority (BRA) through a selection process conducted by the Higher Education Commission.

Speaking at an appointment ceremony on Tuesday, Chief Minister Bugti handed over appointment letters to the newly selected officers and congratulated them on their success. He urged them to perform their responsibilities with dedication, integrity and a strong sense of duty toward the state.

The chief minister said the BRA could become an important pillar of Balochistan’s economic development by improving revenue collection and helping reduce the province’s dependence on non-developmental spending. He noted that a substantial share of provincial resources was currently being consumed by such expenditures, limiting the government’s ability to invest in public welfare.

Bugti expressed hope that stronger revenue generation would provide additional resources for key sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and other development projects.

Reiterating a commitment he made after assuming office, the chief minister said government employment would not be treated as a commodity and that appointments would be based solely on merit. He cited the recruitment of more than 14,500 teachers in the Education Department as an example of the policy.

He also pointed out that candidates from his own home district, Dera Bugti, were unsuccessful in the latest BRA recruitment, describing this as evidence that the selection process had remained impartial.

Bugti appreciated Finance Minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani, BRA Chairperson Abdullah Khan Noorzai and their teams for supporting a transparent recruitment process. He said merit-based appointments were essential for rebuilding young people’s trust in public institutions and encouraged the newly appointed officers to serve with sincerity and professionalism.

    JUI-F cleric shot dead in Waziristan

    A religious scholar affiliated with Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) was shot dead by unidentified attackers in the Azam Warsak area of Birmal tehsil in Lower South Waziristan, police said on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Maulana Muhammad Ismail. According to police, the attack took place shortly after Friday prayers when unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on the cleric. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene before he could receive medical assistance. The attackers fled immediately after carrying out the shooting. Police launched a search operation in the area, but no arrests have been made so far. District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Tahir confirmed the incident and said an initial case has been registered. He added that investigators are examining all possible motives behind the attack and collecting evidence to identify those responsible. According to local officials and tribal elders, Maulana Muhammad Ismail was a resident of Kazha Panga and served as a teacher at a religious seminary in the area. He was known for his religious services and educational work in the community. Following the incident, law enforcement personnel reached the crime scene and shifted the body for legal formalities. Security was also tightened in nearby areas as authorities began efforts to trace the attackers. Police said no group has claimed responsibility for the killing. Investigators are questioning witnesses and reviewing available information to determine whether the attack was linked to personal enmity, militancy or any other motive. The killing has once again highlighted security concerns in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where religious and political figures have occasionally been targeted in violent attacks. Earlier this year, former JUI-F provincial lawmaker Maulana Muhammad Idrees was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Charsadda. In a separate incident in January, JUI-F leader Maulana Sultan Muhammad Wazir succumbed to injuries after being critically wounded in a bomb blast near a religious seminary in Wana Bazaar, South Waziristan.

    Islamabad police receive 30 new vehicles after 14 …

    The Islamabad Police has received 30 new vehicles for 27 police stations in the federal capital after a gap of 14 years, in a move aimed at improving police mobility and reducing emergency response times. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry handed over the vehicle keys to police officials during a ceremony at Police Lines on Saturday. Speaking at the ceremony, Naqvi said modern policing could not be achieved without providing police with functional and adequate transport. He said the newly provided vehicles would help officers respond to emergencies more quickly and perform their duties more effectively. The interior minister said the government was making efforts to provide Islamabad Police with the resources required to improve public safety and maintain security in the capital. He also said work was underway on the construction and upgrading of police stations across Islamabad. According to him, the projects would be completed soon and would improve the working environment and operational capacity of the force. Naqvi highlighted the inclusion of electric vehicles in the government’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly policies. He said the use of electric vehicles would also help reduce expenditure on petroleum products. Tallal Chaudhry said the new vehicles had been distributed among all 27 police stations in Islamabad. He pointed out that police personnel had previously been operating vehicles that were around 14 years old, creating difficulties for effective field operations. The minister of state said rehabilitation and construction work at the capital’s 27 police stations was also in progress and was expected to be completed by the end of the year. He further disclosed that around 9,000 new personnel were being recruited to address the shortage of manpower in Islamabad Police. He said the recruitment process would be conducted strictly on merit.

    Salman Khan faces court summons over jewellery business dispute

    Salman Khan and his sister Alvira Khan Agnihotri have been summoned by a Chandigarh court in connection with a legal dispute involving a Being Human jewellery showroom. The case stems from a complaint filed by Chandigarh-based businessman Arun Gupta, who alleged that he suffered significant financial losses after investing in a jewellery franchise associated with the Being Human brand. According to the complaint, Gupta invested nearly ₹3 crore to establish a Being Human jewellery showroom in Manimajra, Chandigarh, in 2018. He claimed that the agreement with Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited included assurances of business support, promotional assistance, and other commitments necessary for the successful operation of the showroom. Gupta stated that he fulfilled all the conditions outlined in the agreement and spent approximately ₹1 crore on setting up the outlet. However, he alleged that the promised support from the company never materialized, making it difficult for the business to operate effectively. He further claimed that the lack of assistance led to financial difficulties and eventually affected the showroom’s operations. The businessman also alleged that the jewellery store ceased operations in February 2020, disrupting the supply of products and causing substantial monetary losses. According to the complaint, the closure left him unable to continue business as planned, resulting in heavy financial damage. Another key allegation in the complaint relates to the showroom’s inauguration. Gupta claimed that he had been informed Salman Khan would personally inaugurate the outlet, which was expected to attract customers and generate publicity for the business. However, instead of the Bollywood superstar, the event was reportedly attended by Salman Khan’s brother-in-law, Aayush Sharma. The complaint names Salman Khan, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, and several others associated with Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited. After reviewing the matter, the Chandigarh court issued summons directing the accused to appear before it on October 5 for further proceedings. Meanwhile, Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited has strongly denied the allegations. The company maintained that Salman Khan had no direct involvement in the agreement signed with the Chandigarh businessman. It clarified that the Being Human brand had been licensed to the company by the Salman Khan Foundation in 2015, giving it the authority to manage and operate the jewellery business independently. The company further stated that all operational and commercial responsibilities related to the jewellery venture rested solely with Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited, not Salman Khan personally. The case will now proceed before the Chandigarh court, where the parties are expected to present their arguments when the matter comes up for hearing on October 5.
