Government cuts petrol and diesel prices after lat…

The federal government has announced a reduction in petroleum prices, providing some relief to consumers across Pakistan. According to the latest notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs2.20 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) has become cheaper by Rs1.50 per litre.

After the reduction, petrol will now be available at Rs327.62 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has been revised to Rs380.86 per litre. The new prices will come into effect from August 8, 2026, according to the official notification.

The government continues to impose taxes and duties on petroleum products, including Rs110 per litre on petrol and Rs96 per litre on high-speed diesel. These charges remain a significant component of fuel prices paid by consumers.

The latest reduction follows changes in international oil market trends and fluctuations in global fuel prices. In recent months, petroleum rates in Pakistan witnessed major increases due to uncertainty in international markets, particularly after tensions and conflict-related developments in the Middle East affected oil supply concerns.

High-speed diesel prices had reached a record level of Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, after rising from Rs281 per litre following the escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran. Similarly, petrol prices had climbed to Rs458.41 per litre during the same period after starting from around Rs266 per litre in early March.

Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would be adjusted more frequently, including possible daily revisions, due to rapid changes in international oil markets. The government assigned the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the responsibility of determining fuel prices based on global trends.

The decision to introduce daily fuel price adjustments faced opposition from the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which raised concerns and indicated that it may consider a protest strategy.

Petrol remains one of the most widely used fuels in Pakistan, mainly powering private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws, and small transport vehicles. Any change in petrol prices directly affects household budgets, particularly for middle- and lower-income groups.

High-speed diesel also plays a critical role in the economy as it is widely used in heavy transport, agricultural machinery, power generation plants, and industrial operations. Changes in diesel prices often influence transportation costs and can impact the prices of essential goods.

The latest reduction is expected to provide limited relief to consumers, while future fuel prices will continue to depend on international crude oil markets, exchange rates, and government taxation policies.

PTI holds nationwide protests to mark three years

Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged demonstrations across Pakistan on Wednesday to mark three years since former prime minister Imran Khan was first taken into custody. One of the largest gatherings was held outside Lahore’s Aiwan-e-Adl, where members of the Insaf Lawyers Forum, along with party leaders, lawyers and supporters, demanded Khan’s release and called for an end to the legal cases against him. The Lahore protest took place on Upper Mall, outside the court complex, where participants waved party flags and chanted slogans in support of the jailed PTI founder. Demonstrators maintained that the cases filed against Imran Khan were politically motivated and urged authorities to withdraw all charges. They insisted that the legal proceedings were intended to prevent him from participating in politics, an allegation that both the government and state institutions have consistently denied, maintaining that the judicial process is independent and conducted in accordance with the law. Several senior PTI leaders, including Salman Akram Raja, Ali Aijaz Butta, Rehan Dar and Shaukat Basra, addressed the gathering. During their speeches, they called for Imran Khan’s immediate release and vowed that the party would continue its campaign until he was freed and all cases against him were resolved. Protesters repeatedly chanted slogans demanding his release and described the demonstrations as peaceful expressions of public support. The Lahore rally formed part of a nationwide protest campaign announced by PTI to coincide with the anniversary of Khan’s imprisonment. Similar demonstrations were organised in different cities across Pakistan, while overseas PTI supporters also held rallies in several countries to express solidarity with the former prime minister and draw attention to his continued detention. Imran Khan has remained in prison since August 2023, when he was convicted in a corruption case. Since then, he has faced several additional prosecutions and convictions, including cases involving corruption allegations, the disclosure of official secrets and marriage-related legal matters. Khan and his party have consistently rejected all accusations, describing them as politically driven. The government, however, maintains that the cases are being handled through an independent legal process and rejects claims of political interference. Wednesday’s demonstrations were the latest in a series of protests organised by PTI following Khan’s arrest. The party has repeatedly demanded his release and called for fresh general elections. Previous protests have at times faced restrictions imposed by authorities, while some demonstrations have also witnessed incidents of violence and clashes. Separately, PTI leader Shaukat Basra alleged that journalist Natiq Rehan was assaulted by Punjab Police while reporting on the Lahore protest. According to Basra, the journalist was attacked despite performing his professional duties. Punjab Police did not immediately issue a response to the allegation. A day before the nationwide protests, Amnesty International issued a statement urging Pakistani authorities to safeguard Imran Khan’s fundamental rights as his detention entered its third year. Isabelle Lassee, the organisation’s Acting Regional Director for South Asia, expressed concern over what Amnesty described as the denial of a fair trial, prolonged solitary confinement, and restrictions on family visits, legal representation and medical care. The human rights organisation also called on the authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly and avoid arbitrary action against demonstrators. It further urged that Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, be granted regular access to their families, legal counsel and appropriate medical treatment in accordance with international human rights standards.

Deepika and Ranveer prepare to welcome second child

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are reportedly preparing to welcome their second child, with the couple keeping a relatively low profile as they enter another important chapter of their family life. While both actors have remained focused on their professional commitments, their recent appearance at the airport offered fans a rare glimpse of the family together. Deepika was recently spotted travelling to Bengaluru with her daughter, Dua. According to videos circulating online, Ranveer also accompanied his wife and daughter to the airport. The actor appeared to remain inside the car for most of the time and seemed keen to avoid attention from photographers. However, he was eventually seen in the footage as the family made their way through the airport. Deepika attracted attention with her relaxed travel look. She wore an oversized shirt with baggy denim jeans, keeping her outfit comfortable and casual. Her visible baby bump and pregnancy glow quickly became a talking point among fans, who were excited to catch a glimpse of the actress during her pregnancy. Ranveer, meanwhile, kept his appearance simple in a white T-shirt and glasses. The couple’s growing family is also believed to have influenced Ranveer’s upcoming work schedule. The actor is currently associated with the highly anticipated project Pralay, directed by Jai Mehta. The production was initially expected to include a lengthy shooting schedule in Australia. However, parts of the schedule are now reportedly being shifted to Mumbai. The change is said to be connected to both personal and production-related considerations. With Deepika expecting their second child, Ranveer is reportedly keen to remain close to his family during this significant period. At the same time, the production has reportedly encountered difficulties in obtaining permissions for certain Australian filming locations. Moving portions of the shoot to Mumbai could therefore make the production process more manageable while allowing Ranveer to stay closer to home. Their latest airport appearance was therefore welcomed by fans, who were quick to share clips and discuss the couple’s preparations for the arrival of their second baby. AJK orders re-polling at 23 stations in Bagh

MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has ordered re-polling at 23 polling stations in two constituencies of Bagh district following disruptions during the third phase of the AJK elections. Re-polling will take place on August 15. It will cover nine polling stations in LA-15 Bagh Central and 14 polling stations in LA-16 Bagh East. The decision was taken after voting at several polling stations either failed to start on time or was disrupted and later cancelled. The four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli went to the polls on August 10. Elections in other parts of Poonch Division had earlier been delayed because of law and order concerns. In LA-15, PPP candidate Sardar Ziaul Qamar was leading according to unofficial results. He had secured 16,637 votes. PML-N candidate Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas was in second place with 15,015 votes. Jamaat-i-Islami candidate Brigadier (retd) Dr Mohammad Khan had received 12,259 votes. The nine polling stations scheduled for re-polling have more than 5,000 registered voters. Their votes could have a significant impact on the final result. Former AJK prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, who contested the constituency on the PTI ticket in the 2021 election, appeared to have fallen out of contention. A close contest was also reported in LA-16 Bagh East. PML-N candidate Sardar Mir Akbar was leading with 19,515 votes. PPP candidate Sardar Qamaruz Zaman had secured 16,290 votes. The 14 polling stations where re-polling has been ordered reportedly account for around 7,200 votes. Meanwhile, the Election Commission announced the preliminary result for LA-14 Dhirkot. Sajid Iqbal Abbasi of the Awami Dast-o-Bazu Party defeated Muslim Conference president Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan. Abbasi secured 40,522 votes, while Attique received 19,637 votes. The result marked a major setback for the Muslim Conference, which has historically been one of the region’s prominent political parties. The result of LA-17 Haveli also became controversial. PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz demanded a recount and alleged irregularities in election documents. Aziz claimed that Form-24 documents from different polling stations had been altered. Election officials began examining the complaint. Ballot papers and other election material were also reportedly moved under security to Muzaffarabad for further counting and verification. Aziz called on PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to support a recount. He claimed that results signed by presiding officers showed him leading by around 8,600 votes. However, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan, citing the Election Commission, reported that PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore had won the LA-17 seat. The AJK elections are being held in three phases. The polls have taken place amid political tensions and law and order concerns in several parts of the region. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has so far secured 24 seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party has won 10 constituencies, according to the available results. The first two phases also witnessed allegations of electoral irregularities, clashes and political disputes. Both major parties have traded accusations over the conduct of the elections. The third phase was originally planned across all 11 constituencies of Poonch Division. However, voting was allowed only in Bagh and Haveli because of security concerns.

Tom Holland has offered fans a refreshingly honest look at his skincare routine, admitting that he relies almost entirely on wife Zendaya when it comes to looking after his skin. During a recent interview, the Spider-Man star revealed that he has very little knowledge about the products he uses and simply trusts Zendaya to handle that part of their daily routine. Instead of researching products himself, however, Holland happily leaves those decisions to his wife. Whether preparing for action-packed scenes or walking the red carpet, professional makeup helps ensure he looks camera-ready under bright studio lights and high-definition cameras. Their close partnership has become one of the entertainment industry’s most admired relationships. While Holland may not know the names of his favorite skincare products, he made it clear that he trusts Zendaya’s judgment completely. As fans continue to celebrate their romance, Holland’s candid comments have once again proven why the pair remain among Hollywood’s most relatable stars.
