Hesson says National Champions Cup will sharpen Pakistan’s World Cup 2027 preparations

Pakistan white ball head coach Mike Hesson said the upcoming National Champions Cup will play an important role in preparing the squad for the ICC World Cup 2027, expressing confidence in the tournament ahead of its start next month.

The competition begins on August 18 at Multan Cricket Stadium, with all seven matches scheduled as day night fixtures. The 50 over List A tournament will feature four sides, Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold, and will officially open the 2026-27 domestic cricket season. Teams will compete in a single league round robin format, with the top two sides advancing to the final.

Speaking to reporters, Hesson explained why the domestic season is starting with a 50 over List A event rather than another format. He said the four team tournament was specifically organized as part of Pakistan’s build up toward the World Cup.

Hesson said he expects every player involved to get a genuine chance to show what they can do in what he called a highly competitive event. He said fans can expect quality cricket throughout, with each player given an opportunity to perform on a meaningful stage.

The coach added that the team management is focused on maximizing the number of List A matches available to players ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming assignments, saying the coaching staff is planning the schedule specifically to create as many playing opportunities as possible.

Looking further ahead to the World Cup itself, Hesson pointed to Pakistan’s historical strength in major ICC events, saying he hopes the team can deliver another strong campaign when the tournament arrives in 2027. He said selectors have put together well balanced squads across all four domestic sides and voiced confidence that the tournament would help several standout performers emerge ahead of the World Cup selection process.

Gold prices edge lower in Pakistan as global rates decline

KARACHI: Gold prices recorded a modest decline in Pakistan on Saturday, with the domestic market following a slight downward movement in international bullion rates. According to data released by the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association, the price of gold fell by Rs500 per tola, bringing the price to Rs459,936 per tola. The association reported a corresponding decline in the price of 10 grams of gold. The rate for 10 grams was reduced by Rs429, settling at Rs394,320. The decrease in domestic gold prices came as international bullion rates also moved lower. In the global market, gold fell by $5 per ounce to $4,375 per ounce. Market participants closely monitor international gold prices, currency movements and domestic demand when determining bullion rates in Pakistan. Changes in the international market can have a direct impact on local prices, particularly when combined with fluctuations in the exchange rate. Gold remains a popular investment and savings instrument in Pakistan, where consumers and investors closely track daily changes in bullion prices. Jewellery demand, inflation expectations and movements in global financial markets can also influence local buying and selling activity. The latest reduction, however, was relatively limited, indicating that the domestic bullion market remained broadly stable despite the decline in international prices.

Lucy Davis reveals stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis publicly

Lucy Davis, best known for her role as Dawn Tinsley in the original British version of The Office, has revealed that she has been living with stage 4 breast cancer. The actress shared the deeply personal news on Tuesday, August 11, explaining that she had kept her diagnosis private for around a year and a half. Davis said she now felt ready to speak publicly about her condition and use her experience to encourage others to take changes in their bodies seriously. According to Davis, the cancer has spread to several parts of her body, including her spine, right hip and ribs. She described the illness as incurable and said that it had progressed to a point where chemotherapy was no longer an option. Reflecting on how she first discovered the cancer, Davis explained that she initially noticed what felt like a very small hard area rather than an obvious lump. Because the change was so subtle, she nearly decided not to have it examined. Her experience led her to issue an important message to her followers, urging them not to dismiss unusual changes or symptoms. She encouraged people to have anything concerning checked by a medical professional, even if it appears minor. Despite her diagnosis, Davis said she is not frightened about what lies ahead and has found a sense of peace with her situation. She also spoke about the emotional impact her illness has had on her loved ones, acknowledging that the experience may be more difficult for her family than it is for her. Davis also made it clear that she intends to continue working for as long as she is able. She said she remains perfectly capable of working and described acting as one of the greatest joys of her life. The actress rose to fame through The Office, the acclaimed British mockumentary created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. She portrayed Dawn Tinsley, the witty and kind-hearted receptionist who became romantically involved with Tim Canterbury, played by Martin Freeman. The series originally ran from 2001 to 2003 and recently marked its 25th anniversary. Following her success on The Office, Davis built an impressive career across television and film. She appeared in the 2004 comedy-horror movie Shaun of the Dead, where she played Dianne. She later took on the role of Etta Candy in the 2017 superhero film Wonder Woman. Davis also became widely recognized by a new generation of viewers for portraying Hilda Spellman in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. More recently, she appeared as Eva in the Disney Channel action-comedy series The Villains of Valley View. While Davis’s diagnosis has brought a deeply personal chapter of her life into the public eye, her decision to continue pursuing her career reflects the important role acting continues to play in her life. Her message about checking unusual changes also serves as a reminder that early medical attention can be important when something does not feel right.

Court grants interim bail to business partner’s …

A Karachi Additional District and Sessions Court has granted interim bail to Abdullah, the brother of the business partner of young trader Mir Raza Ali, in connection with the businessman’s murder case. The court approved Abdullah’s interim pre-arrest bail until September 1, providing him temporary protection from arrest while the investigation into the case continues. Abdullah had approached the court seeking bail before arrest after being allegedly linked to the investigation surrounding Mir Raza Ali’s death. During the hearing, the court also issued notices to the investigating officer and the complainant in the case. The judge directed the applicant to submit surety bonds worth Rs100,000 as part of the conditions attached to the interim bail. According to Abdullah’s lawyer, there was no basis for treating his client as a suspect in the murder. The lawyer informed the court that Abdullah had a business-related connection with Mir Raza and used to supply chocolates to him. The defence further explained that Abdullah had spoken to Mir Raza by telephone on the night when the young trader left his home. According to the lawyer, the phone conversation took place at around 3:30am. The lawyer argued that the late-night phone call should be viewed in the context of their regular business dealings rather than being treated as evidence of involvement in the alleged crime. The defence also accused the police of harassing Abdullah during the investigation. His lawyer told the court that law-enforcement officials were repeatedly troubling the applicant despite the absence of any established evidence connecting him directly to the murder. The lawyer maintained that communication between Abdullah and Mir Raza at around the same time was not unusual. He explained that after completing his work, Mir Raza would generally speak with the applicant around that time. The defence therefore requested the court to provide Abdullah with protection from arrest while the authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza Ali’s death. After hearing the arguments, the court granted interim bail until September 1 and directed the relevant parties, including the investigating officer and complainant, to respond to the bail application. The applicant was also ordered to submit the required surety bonds. The court’s decision does not amount to a final determination regarding Abdullah’s involvement in the case. The interim bail merely prevents his immediate arrest while the matter is considered further by the court. The murder investigation remains ongoing, and the police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death, including his final movements, communications and interactions with people connected to him. The late-night telephone conversation between Mir Raza and Abdullah is among the details that investigators may consider while establishing a timeline of events. However, the defence has maintained that the conversation was consistent with their normal business-related communication. The case has attracted attention because of the young trader’s death and the subsequent investigation into people associated with him. Abdullah’s decision to seek pre-arrest bail indicates that he feared possible arrest during the investigation. The court’s issuance of notices to the investigating officer and complainant means that the prosecution and police will have an opportunity to present their position regarding the allegations and the bail request. For now, Abdullah remains protected by the interim bail order until September 1, subject to the conditions imposed by the court. Further proceedings are expected to determine the next legal steps in the case and whether the investigating authorities have sufficient evidence to proceed against him.

Iran considers allowing European nations to clear …

Iran is reportedly considering allowing European countries to participate in clearing naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz, marking a potential shift in its long-standing position as diplomatic efforts continue to restore safe navigation through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. According to multiple diplomatic sources, Iranian officials are evaluating the possibility of permitting a European-led mine-clearing operation aimed at reopening commercial shipping lanes affected by months of heightened regional tensions. If approved, the move could help restore confidence in maritime trade and improve the flow of global energy supplies. Sources familiar with the discussions said the proposed policy change is intended to facilitate the safe passage of commercial vessels and oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international oil and liquefied natural gas exports. The waterway has remained under increased scrutiny due to ongoing security concerns and the reported presence of naval mines. Diplomatic officials indicated that Iran has attached several conditions to any potential European involvement. These reportedly include guarantees for the safety of European naval vessels, the existence of a ceasefire or a significant reduction in regional hostilities, approval from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and assurances that the mission would be limited strictly to humanitarian and commercial navigation rather than broader military operations. While the conditions have not yet been finalized, sources said negotiations are progressing in a constructive direction. No formal agreement has been announced, and discussions among the involved parties remain ongoing. The reported flexibility represents a notable departure from Iran’s previous public position, which has consistently opposed the involvement of foreign military or naval forces in security operations within the Strait of Hormuz. Diplomats, however, say recent closed-door talks suggest Tehran may be willing to reconsider its stance under specific circumstances. Oman is also believed to be playing a key diplomatic role in facilitating communication between Iran and Western countries. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has previously stated that Tehran and Oman had reached an understanding on the geographical parameters of maritime routes, providing a basis for continued negotiations. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital energy corridors, carrying a significant share of globally traded crude oil and liquefied natural gas. Any improvement in security and navigation through the waterway could reduce shipping insurance costs, stabilize global energy markets, and support the uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels. Although negotiations are still underway, the reported discussions highlight growing diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions and ensure the safe resumption of international maritime trade.
