Flood alert in Pakistan as India opens Salal dam g…

Pakistan has issued a high-level flood alert after India released a significant volume of water from the Salal Dam following heavy rainfall in Indian-administered Kashmir. The move has raised concerns among Pakistani authorities, who are closely monitoring the situation as water levels continue to rise in the Chenab River.

According to Punjab’s Irrigation Department, the heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas prompted Indian authorities to open all gates of the Salal Dam, allowing a large flow of water to move downstream toward Pakistan. Officials have warned that the increased water discharge could reach Wazirabad within the next 48 hours, prompting precautionary measures in vulnerable areas.

The Irrigation Department stated that water levels in the Chenab River have already begun to increase. Authorities are continuously tracking river flows to assess the potential impact on downstream districts and to provide timely updates if the situation changes.

As a precaution, a high alert has been issued for flood-prone areas, particularly in Sialkot and Wazirabad, where local administrations have been instructed to remain prepared for any emergency. Disaster management teams are coordinating with relevant departments to monitor developments and ensure a rapid response if water levels continue to rise.

Officials have urged residents living near the Chenab River and low-lying areas to stay informed through official announcements and avoid unnecessary travel near riverbanks. Emergency services are also on standby to respond quickly should flooding occur.

Seasonal monsoon rains often lead to rising river levels across the region, making cross-border water management a critical issue during this period. Sudden increases in water discharge from upstream reservoirs can significantly affect downstream communities, requiring close coordination between authorities and continuous monitoring of river conditions.

While officials have expressed concern over the rising water levels, they are also emphasizing that the situation remains under observation. The extent of any flooding will depend on rainfall patterns over the coming days and the volume of water continuing to flow into the Chenab River.

Residents in at-risk areas are advised to follow guidance issued by local authorities, remain alert for weather and flood updates, and take necessary precautions if evacuation advisories are issued. Authorities have assured the public that monitoring efforts will continue around the clock to minimize risks and protect communities from any potential flooding.

With the water surge expected to arrive within the next two days, emergency agencies remain on alert as Pakistan prepares for the possible impact of increased river flows during the ongoing monsoon season.

IRGC warns UK of retaliation as US maintains naval…

TEHRAN: Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated further after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that any country assisting Washington in military operations against Tehran could become a legitimate target, while the US confirmed its naval blockade on Iran remains fully operational. An IRGC spokesperson, speaking to Iranian state media, warned that countries providing logistical or military support to the United States—including the United Kingdom—would face retaliation. The official alleged that US B-1 bombers had recently used British bases during strikes on Iran, claiming any nation involved in such operations would be treated as a direct participant in the conflict. The warning came as reports emerged that US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended plans for additional strikes on Iran after nearly two weeks of continuous military operations. According to US media, the decision was influenced by concerns over dwindling missile defence stockpiles, the risk of wider regional escalation and the desire to allow more room for diplomatic efforts. Despite the pause in airstrikes, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said its naval blockade against Iran remains in force. US forces reported intercepting several commercial vessels suspected of attempting to breach the blockade, redirecting multiple ships, disabling one vessel that ignored repeated warnings and carrying out verification inspections on others before allowing them to continue their voyages. US officials said contingency plans remain in place should military operations resume, underscoring that Washington is maintaining pressure on Tehran while keeping diplomatic options open. Meanwhile, Iran’s latest warning has added to growing concerns that the confrontation could draw more regional and international actors into the crisis.

Trump criticizes oil companies over high profits a…

US President Donald Trump has criticized major oil companies over their growing profits, saying that energy firms are earning excessive amounts of money amid rising fuel prices. His remarks come as global oil markets face uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions and disruptions affecting energy supplies. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he supports free markets but expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as unusually high earnings by oil companies. He stated that while businesses have the right to operate freely, current market conditions have allowed some energy companies to generate profits beyond what he considers reasonable. The increase in crude oil prices has significantly boosted the revenues of several major energy companies worldwide. Market uncertainty linked to tensions between the United States and Iran has contributed to higher oil prices, creating favorable conditions for large oil producers and companies. Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco reported a significant increase in quarterly profit, announcing earnings of $33.4 billion, compared with $25.2 billion during the same period last year. This represents a substantial rise in profits. US-based energy companies have also recorded strong financial results. ExxonMobil reported quarterly earnings of $14.5 billion, more than double compared with the previous year. Meanwhile, Chevron posted a profit of $12.1 billion, marking a significant increase from the same period previously. British energy company Shell also reported nearly $10 billion in quarterly profits, making it one of the company’s strongest financial performances in recent years. While energy companies benefit from higher crude oil prices, consumers in the United States have faced increased fuel costs. Average petrol prices have risen significantly since the beginning of the conflict-related market disruptions, adding further pressure on households already dealing with inflation. Fuel prices have become a major political issue ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Lowering petrol costs has emerged as a key priority for the Trump administration, as high energy prices often influence public opinion and economic sentiment. A major factor behind the rise in oil prices has been disruption in key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Reduced oil transportation through the region has affected global supply and contributed to market volatility. Although diplomatic efforts have reportedly aimed at reducing tensions and improving shipping access, uncertainty remains in global energy markets. Security concerns in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait have also affected oil transportation routes. Energy analysts believe that major oil companies may continue benefiting from elevated prices in the short term. However, they suggest that increased global supply or improved conditions in strategic waterways could eventually push crude oil prices lower. The ongoing debate highlights the challenge faced by governments worldwide: balancing energy company profits, market stability, and the need to provide affordable fuel for consumers.

IHC seeks answers over delay in judicial appointme…

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has asked the federal government to explain the constitutional implications of keeping Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s advice on judicial appointments pending with President Asif Ali Zardari. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir issued notices to the president, the federal government and the attorney general on Monday while hearing a petition challenging the delay in approving appointments to the superior courts. The court also directed the respondents to submit separate concise reports detailing when the prime minister’s advice was sent to the president and what action had been taken on it. The case has been fixed for hearing on August 11. The petition was filed by lawyer Luqman Zafar through his counsel Zahid Asif Chaudhry, who questioned the prolonged delay in completing the constitutional process for judicial appointments. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, had recommended 19 additional judges and the confirmation of five judges for the high courts during meetings held on July 20 and 21. The recommendations were subsequently forwarded by the prime minister to President Zardari for approval under Article 48 of the Constitution. During Monday’s proceedings, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that the use of the word “shall” in Article 48(1) placed a constitutional duty on the president to act on the prime minister’s advice. He maintained that although the president could return the advice for reconsideration within the prescribed period, the Constitution did not permit an indefinite delay. The counsel further argued that the delay was affecting the administration of justice at a time when the superior courts were already struggling with a growing backlog of cases. According to the petitioner, prolonged vacancies could also undermine the public’s constitutional right to timely access to justice. Justice Tahir directed that notices be served through all available modes. Additional Attorney General Rashid Hafeez was also asked to ensure that the respondents provide the court with clear timelines regarding the submission and handling of the judicial appointments summary. The presidential delay has already had consequences for the high courts. Four additional judges of the Peshawar High Court whose confirmation had been recommended by the Judicial Commission ceased to hold office on August 4 after their terms expired without formal notifications. A similar situation arose in the Sindh High Court, where an additional judge left office after his extended tenure ended on July 29. The oath-taking ceremony for the newly recommended judges had originally been scheduled for July 27 but was postponed indefinitely after the president neither approved the summary nor returned it for reconsideration. With the matter now coming under judicial scrutiny, the Islamabad High Court is set to examine whether the continued delay in acting on the prime minister’s advice is constitutionally permissible.

Tom Holland admits he had to fake enthusiasm for bad movies

Tom Holland has opened up about a time when he had to be less than honest while promoting certain films. He admitted those projects simply were not worth recommending to audiences. The 30-year-old actor is currently deep into promotional duties for his upcoming film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” During a recent conversation on the Dish Podcast with host Nick Grimshaw, Holland explained that talking to press about this particular project has felt refreshingly genuine and effortless. He described how promoting a film he is genuinely proud of removes any pressure to stretch the truth. When journalists ask why audiences should watch the movie, he said, there is no need to fabricate enthusiasm because he authentically believes people will enjoy it. Holland contrasted this with earlier experiences in his career, revealing that he sometimes privately doubted whether certain projects deserved an audience at all. He admitted that in the past, when reporters asked him to justify why viewers should see a particular film, he sometimes had to hold back his true opinion, quietly acknowledging to himself that the honest answer would have been far less flattering. The actor did not specify which films prompted these private doubts, but his comments suggest that not every project in his filmography has met his own standards of quality, even if he could not say so publicly at the time. Holland’s candid remarks come as he gears up for his next major role, returning as Peter Parker in the latest installment of the Spider-Man franchise. He will be joined once again by Zendaya, continuing their on-screen partnership from previous films in the series. The upcoming movie, which blends action and science fiction elements, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31. Alongside Holland and Zendaya, the cast includes several notable additions, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Sadie Sink round out the ensemble for this fourth sequel in the ongoing Spider-Man saga. Given the franchise’s massive popularity and the strong cast lineup, expectations are already running high for this latest chapter. Holland’s honesty about past promotional experiences also offers a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the pressures actors face when discussing projects publicly, regardless of how they privately feel about the final product. Fans will get to judge for themselves whether this new installment lives up to the hype when it arrives in theaters later this month.
