Hezbollah slams Israel talks as ‘humiliation’

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem has strongly criticized direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, describing the dialogue as a series of “concessions” that have failed to serve Lebanon’s national interests.

Speaking during an Arbaeen commemoration in the Lebanese city of Baalbek, Qassem said the ongoing negotiations had brought “humiliation and repeated compromises” rather than meaningful progress. He urged Lebanese leaders to avoid external pressure and instead pursue policies that safeguard the country’s sovereignty.

The Hezbollah chief also criticized President Joseph Aoun, claiming the president had failed to play a neutral and unifying role during the current political situation. Qassem argued that Lebanon’s leadership should engage in dialogue with domestic political forces rather than making concessions to achieve foreign policy objectives.

He further claimed that Israeli attacks were halted only after a memorandum linked to efforts between Iran and the United States helped reduce tensions. According to Qassem, Lebanon’s political leadership would not achieve lasting stability by following policies influenced by outside powers.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran remains committed to defending its territorial integrity but has no intention of expanding the ongoing conflict beyond its borders.

Addressing a gathering in Tehran, Pezeshkian said Iran would continue protecting its national security while focusing on strengthening internal unity. He stressed that a united society would leave no opportunity for foreign interference or attempts to create divisions within the country.

The latest statements come as uncertainty continues over possible diplomatic contacts between Iran and the United States. US President Donald Trump recently said discussions with Tehran were underway and described them as a final opportunity to reach an agreement. However, Iranian officials denied that any negotiations were currently taking place or that formal meetings had been scheduled.

The conflicting statements have added to uncertainty over future diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions.

The regional situation has also affected global energy markets. Saudi energy giant Aramco reported a sharp rise in second-quarter earnings, saying higher oil prices and supply disruptions linked to the regional conflict significantly boosted its financial performance. The company said it maintained production despite challenging conditions across the region.

Blake Lively reacts to tragic deaths of Hayden Pan…

Blake Lively has shared a heartfelt message following the tragic death of Hayden Panettiere, while also remembering her late friend and former co-star Michelle Trachtenberg. The actress used the emotional moment to encourage people to show more kindness and compassion toward one another. Lively shared a video on her Instagram Stories featuring scenes from the 2005 Disney movie Ice Princess. The film starred both Panettiere and Trachtenberg, who played rivals before their characters ultimately became friends. Lively appeared alongside both actresses in the movie, making the footage an especially meaningful reminder of their connection.  Alongside the video, Lively expressed gratitude for the joy the two women had brought to audiences. She also urged her followers to “be kind,” highlighting the importance of remembering that people may be dealing with private struggles that others cannot see.  Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. The actress was known for major roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise. Her family described her as a “force of nature” who brought immense love and joy to those around her.  Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and former co-stars. Connie Britton, Viola Davis, Selma Blair and several other stars have shared memories of Panettiere, remembering her talent, warmth and determination.  For Lively, the loss also carried echoes of another heartbreaking Hollywood tragedy. Michelle Trachtenberg, who worked with Lively on Gossip Girl, died in February 2025 at the age of 39. Lively previously paid tribute to Trachtenberg, describing her as a deeply kind and fiercely loyal person whose presence could immediately change the energy in a room.  Trachtenberg’s death was later determined to have resulted from complications of diabetes. Her passing deeply affected the Gossip Girl cast, with Lively among those who publicly remembered her.  By placing Panettiere and Trachtenberg together in her latest tribute, Lively appeared to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of appreciating people while they are still here. Her message comes at a difficult time for Panettiere’s loved ones and fans. The actress had recently opened up about her life and struggles in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, giving audiences a more personal understanding of the experiences behind her public image.  Lively’s tribute ultimately focused less on celebrity and more on humanity. Her call for kindness serves as a reminder that compassion can matter deeply, especially when someone’s private struggles are not visible to the outside world.

Oman oil spill spreads dramatically, nearing scale…

An oil spill off the coast of Oman is rapidly expanding into one of the worst maritime environmental disasters in years after weeks of largely unchecked spread, according to international agencies, satellite imagery and environmental organizations. The slick, which originated from a grounded tanker carrying Russian crude, had reached Oman’s mainland by Wednesday, the United Nations shipping agency confirmed. John Amos, an oil spill specialist who reviewed satellite imagery, said the affected area now covers more than 2,000 square kilometers. The vessel involved, the Caroline Bezengi, was carrying an estimated 800,000 barrels of Russian oil and operates under international sanctions. It ran aground on June 30 near an Omani island that forms part of a protected marine nature reserve. The tanker first reported trouble off the coast of Yemen on June 8, and maritime sources said an explosion appeared to have occurred on board. No party has claimed responsibility for any attack, though the ship was navigating waters tied to two separate conflicts during its voyage from Russia to India. The tanker departed the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in April, a region central to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have targeted vessels belonging to the so called shadow fleet used to transport Russian oil, a network that includes the Caroline Bezengi. Ship tracking data shows the tanker then passed through the Suez Canal in late May before sailing near Yemen, where Iran aligned Houthi forces have become entangled in the broader regional conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. A tangled set of war related and sanctions related shipping regulations is already complicating the emergency response and could further delay efforts to contain the disaster, according to insurers and analysts. The IOPC Funds, the intergovernmental body responsible for compensating tanker spill damages, told a foreign news agency it will not cover cleanup costs since the incident is being classified as an act of war rather than an ordinary accident. The 25 year old tanker also lacks coverage from any recognized Western insurer. Amos, who serves as chief executive of the environmental nonprofit SkyTruth, said the worst case outcome would involve no adequate response capable of preventing further damage. He said the spill’s scale could ultimately rival the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster and noted that the tanker is comparable in size to the Sanchi, an Iranian vessel that collided with a freighter off China in 2018 in what became the world’s worst tanker disaster in decades. Slick accelerates toward mainland The spill was first identified by analysts in early July and has since begun reaching Oman’s mainland, according to the International Maritime Organization. A spokesperson for the agency said oil is drifting offshore northeast of Al Qibliyyah Island, with some already washing ashore, and confirmed that contingency planning for the spill is underway. The IMO said seasonal monsoon weather has restricted access to the tanker and delayed salvage efforts. Satellite images show the vessel grounded at Al Qibliyyah Island, part of a nature reserve that includes the Hallaniyat Islands and provides habitat for endangered sea turtles, humpback whales and coral reef ecosystems, all of which now face heightened risk from the spreading oil. Omani officials said Monday the slick covers nearly 400 square kilometers, though they have not responded to requests for additional detail on containment efforts beyond confirming the use of booms to limit the spread. Environmental groups and independent specialists estimate the true size at several times that figure, and say the rate of spread has accelerated sharply since early August. Greenpeace reported Tuesday that the affected area grew from around 45 square kilometers at the end of July to 150 square kilometers by early August, then quadrupled to roughly 600 square kilometers within just two days, according to Hanen Keskes, the group’s political campaigns lead for the Middle East. Amos’s estimate of 2,000 square kilometers suggests the spill has grown more than 40 times larger since the start of August alone. Amos said containing the disaster will require more than floating booms, including stabilizing the grounded vessel and transferring any remaining crude to another tanker. He warned that delays in salvage operations will only worsen the tanker’s condition and make the eventual recovery effort more complicated and dangerous.

Azma Bukhari hits back at Sharjeel Memon over AJK …

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has strongly criticised Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon over his remarks about the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. Azma Bukhari told Memon to “drink cold water and pour some on his head,” saying the election was over and the people of AJK had already delivered their verdict. She said the election results had proved the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) calculations wrong and dismissed its allegations regarding pre-poll rigging. Bukhari claimed that a PML-N candidate had recovered bags containing ballot papers from the residence of a PPP candidate one night before polling. Taking a sharp jibe at the PPP, she said its “arrow had disappeared in the valleys of Kashmir,” while the PML-N’s “lion” was roaring across the region. She said AJK voters had given their verdict in favour of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif during the first phase of the elections. Bukhari urged the PPP to learn to accept defeat instead of raising allegations whenever it loses an election. She said political parties should celebrate victories but also show maturity in defeat. She further questioned the PPP’s position on elections in Gilgit-Baltistan. Bukhari asked whether the party considered those elections transparent because it had formed the government there. She said it was unfair to describe an election as transparent when a party wins and allege rigging when it loses.

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry has called for the immediate end of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s solitary confinement and urged authorities to shift him to a hospital following recommendations in his latest medical report. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Chaudhry expressed concern over Imran Khan’s health and conditions at Adiala Jail. He said the medical report made it necessary for authorities to end the former prime minister’s solitary confinement and provide him with better medical facilities. Chaudhry criticised the decision to keep Imran Khan in isolation and alleged that denying adequate medical care to a major political leader was unacceptable. He urged the authorities to follow the recommendations of medical experts and ensure that all necessary treatment and facilities were provided without delay. A medical report submitted to the Supreme Court reportedly contains recommendations from a medical board that examined Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. According to the report, the medical board recommended several measures to help manage Imran Khan’s blood pressure and anxiety. The doctors recommended that the former prime minister be allowed to walk for at least one hour every day. The board said some relaxation in the prison environment was necessary in view of his current health condition. The medical team also recommended providing Imran Khan with newspapers, magazines, books and television facilities. The measures are intended to keep him mentally engaged during his imprisonment. The medical board also made recommendations regarding his meetings with family members and his wife. It suggested that meetings with his family and wife should take place more regularly and for longer than the currently prescribed duration, subject to the applicable rules. According to the recommendations, regular physical activity, access to reading material and greater interaction with family members could help reduce Imran Khan’s anxiety and assist in keeping his blood pressure under control. Fawad Chaudhry has called on the authorities to implement the medical recommendations and ensure that Imran Khan receives appropriate treatment and a suitable environment during his imprisonment.
